Haunting is the word I've always used to describe her vocals. I grew up listening to Patsy Cine songs - she was my grandparents' favorite singer. My favorite song of hers is Faded Love - it showcases her storytelling ability and the breath she takes at the end of it is just the finishing touch on an exquisite performance.

You will notice that up until the late 60's, songs over 3 minutes long were non-existent. This is because of the technology. A 78 RPM record at 10" diameter could record 3 minutes of music while a 12" could record 4 minutes. When these were replaced by 45's the 3 minute limit was maintained because all songs had been written to fit the previous technology. So, while the tech could hold more per inch, the size of the record was reduced instead of adding more music. The cheaper material (vinyl instead of shellac) made records more affordable for a younger audience and increased quality - but it wouldn't be until the LP at 33 RPM was introduced. Once the LP was around song lengths began to vary with famous examples being "Alice's Restaurant" (18+ min.) by Arlo Guthrie and "Thick as a Brick" (about 45 min. in full) by Jethro Tull.
I love history. One can study everything in history.

    • @larrywt656
      @larrywt656 3 роки тому +7

While your technology points were spot on, that was NOT why the limit was maintained when 45s became readily available. Radio stations at that time refused to play any songs over three minutes long so that they could cram as many songs played into an hour as possible and therefore make as much money as they could off the playing of the songs.

    • @larrywt656

@@larrywt656 That had influence, though the real issue for radio wasn't the length of the songs per se, as much as it was the best way to cut in commercials and required plays of PSAs. Having done a couple years work as a promotions director in college, l am no stranger to arguing with DJs that they are going to fit into the rotation the federally required PSA's (and occasional commercial).

"Funny How Time Slips Away" was a Pop hit for Jimmy Elledge in 1961 #22 and for
Joe Hinton in 1964 #14. You can hear them both here on UA-cam.

Patsy had the kind of voice that almost didn't need music besides her beautiful vocals...I've listened to her all my life even though I don't necessarily listen to Country music. Her music is so special to me, a!most like an Angel singing...

This song makes me cry. My Grandma sounded just like Patsy Cline. We always sang this together

Home Free just released their cover of this song. They did a very good job with it.
Check out Voiceplay's cover of Oogie Boogie's Song.
Also their bass Geoff Castellucci has made some really good solos including Sixteen Tons, Blackbird and Headless Horseman.

Only singer to match Patsy singing "CRAZY" was Angelina Jordan at age 12. Leann Rimes would be a distant second place

My grandfather's favorite recording artist, for obvious reasons. There has never been another voice like Ms. Patsy.

Patsy Cline was killed in a plane crash at 29. She started giving her things away a year earlier because she told people she would not live much longer. She was my Mother’s era but I listen to her music most days.

Patsy is still the best solo female singer ever. 59 years after her tragic death she still sells
millions of records. Influenced more singers than anyone else. Opened the door for so many
that followed her showing that girl singers could be Headliners and stars in their own right.
The first solo female singer inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
