When this song was released Ethiopia was in a deathly famine. Both the USA and Britain made songs for charity on famine relief to help get needed food to these people. It was a heart felt experience and a sense of unity behind the driving force.
How have you never heard of this song before? My aunt from Spain who doesn't speak a lick of English used to sing, "who eeeee rrrrrr da whirl..." In the summer of 1985 months after it was a hit. This is like the 1992 dream team for basketball but with music.

That may have something to do with the fact that he is dressed to the nines and she is wearing a sweatshirt. I find it hilarious that no-one recognizes Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, who had the biggest selling album in history.
Take this opportunity and make a list. As people have said, these are all legends. React to them all and then come back to this song in a year or so and see how many you can name then. I would be here for the entire journey
I grew up with all these people. So many generations in one room. Some from my childhood TV and radio and some from my children's MTV. You need to look up the list it will blow your mind.
This is the most important song for mixing culture activism and music please look up this history this is followed by "live Aid" all for the ppl suffering and dying from African draught. It led to a single day when music Brought the whole world together even for just one day. It's an important lesson in history. It all started with one Man Bob Geldolf who did a Christmas song called do they know it's Christmas time at all. (Please reference this as well) formed an English super group, then America did ours soon after. This all led too a multi national day of free concerts broadcast live on every channel world wide. A highlight of humanity!!!! I'm 60 I know
I grew up in the 80s. It was a wonderful decade for so many reasons, the collaborations by musicians for charitable causes being one of the biggest. I wish our younger generations today could experience something as beautiful and selfless.
Dont forget that Midge Ure of Ultravox ACTUALLY WROTE Do They Know Its Christmas but Geldoff was the instigator and mouthpiece. Midge always gets overlooked. Love you Midge!!
I am a 45 yr old woman from Minnesota- and I remember this as a child and still cry everytime I watch and hear this. Fills my Heart immensly. Prayer for World Peace. Ageless!
Exactly. Artists coming together with nothing to gain, checking their ego at the door, and doing something great for people in a way that doesn't benefit any of them. Sadly, this is impossible to do today because of just who modern artists are. Even the attempted cover pales in comparison because the artists weren't being pure.
Sadly it can't happened in contemporary times due to the fact that Auto-Tune came onto the scene. Not a lot of truly gifted singers with natural voices around to put out a performance like this. Above the door to that studio Quincy Jones put up a sign saying "Leave Your Ego AT The Door" and he absolutely meant it.
These guys are young. To situate this, I was born in 66 and I wouldn't know the majority of artists who were producing during the year l was born. Do you know what l mean?
Brings so many memories. I remember when this seemingly impossible talents came together for such an amazing cause. You’re correct, impossible not to smile. Perhaps shed a tear or two as well. So enjoyed revisiting this. Thank you.
He ended up as part of that recording session by happenstance. He was actually in the building shopping for a business manager that day, but it turned out to be his real life Forrest Gump moment, with his accidental intersect with history.
I've watched quite a few different reactors reacting to this song and you are actually the first one I believe that recognize Dan Aykroyd in the crowd!! Glad you enjoyed it this song always brings a smile and a tear of joy to my eye when I hear it especially watching the video how they all came together to do this!!
Every single one of these people have amazing voices and have hits. You should do a reaction video to at least one hit from each of them, that should keep you busy for more than a year.
Yes, that is Dan Aykroyd from Ghostbusters in the background. He is also one of the Blues Brothers so musically he fits too. Very few recognize him in there so congrats. 😀
I don't think you'd get today's stars in for a charity song now like this! Quincy Jones was a master in handling all the egos. You need to look up each artist in this and react to some of their songs. Amazing artists!
In the behind the scenes video which can be found here on UA-cam, you can really see how much work went into this. My favourite thing is how Quincy put up a sign saying egos were to be left at the door, and they were. There was no ego in that place, just an amazing collaboration of talent that is probably never to be seen again.
I've read that when alot of stars that were chauffeured there, started complaining and then bruce drove up in a pickup truck and said he's here to help others.... they all agreed
Old? Nah, it was just yesterday. So beautiful, and watching you appreciate and love this made me cry. There is so much we, the young and the old, don’t know about each other. We ARE the world - what are we doing to each other?
This song epitomizes the philosophy that I grew up believing in, that we could change the world by loving each other. I hope this type of thing can happen for us with this division and hate that seems to plague u the world presently.
I recognized all of them due to my advanced age, lol. These are all the great artists of MY generation, massive talent, and with Quincy producing and arranging, it doesn’t get any better.
All the stars that did this song went into a studio for recording right after a Music Awards show. Most of your guesses on artists were correct! God Bless You Sir!

@@brookehornback1896 the name of the group was Band Aid. It was put together by Bob Geldof, (from Boomtown Rats) and Midge Ure, (from Ultravox) and they wrote the song "Do they know it's Christmas time at all" and the profits were given to aid famine in Ethiopia & Africa. Later, Geldof & Ure helped form the "one day concert" seen around the world known as "Live Aid"! on MTV, Which featured most of the current singers & bands popular at the time.
I wish every generation could have a video like this to look back on, these artists were my hero's as a child in the 80's thank you for coming together for this.
Well... actually, until now we do have a video like this (not with such great artists, but nowadays singers don't sing). This song was from 1985 and there has been many replicas supporting other countries over the years. I don't remember when was the last one, but in spanish, the one made for Haití, Daddy Yankee is on it, so is not that old or at least I guess isn't😅

Gosh, I’m old! I remember when this came out and I can name ALL of the singers! I am shocked that you didn’t know more of these great artists! You must be a whole lot younger than me! 😂 This song never gets old no matter how old it is!!
What always surprises me is that so many young people recognize Steve Perry when he only has one line and he retired from performing in 1998 due to health problems. He has such a memorable voice.
You are right, these are some of the best of the best singers of that era! No auto tune or effects, just the real and raw voices of these artists. This collaboration was genius and IMO there will never be anything else like this at this same level of talent! All of these singers gave their time and voices to do this to raise money for Africa. This has remained popular to this day due to how beautiful it sounds and how well done it is. Thanks for the reaction.
MrLboyd, in all honesty, you are so inspirational. I first saw you on your "Don't Look Down" reaction and you said something that changed me: "everyone needs to get to this point in life". Your positivity and willingness to push yourself outside of your comfort zone (Slaughter to Prevail)......that's what life is about. Keep up the amazing work. I wish you the best, sir!
The 80's were amazing with musical charity benefits, We are the World (US for Africa), Live from Wembly(Live Aid), Farm Aid. it was amazing to hear all the amazing musicians that came together for great causes.
There was also a radio simulcast on Good Friday morning. Literally thousands of radio stations in 25 countries played it at the exact same time. They raised $63million (around $150million in today’s dollars) for famine relief in Africa. There was a reprise a few years ago for Haiti relief. Don’t remember everyone but I know Jamie Fox and Pink were in it. 🤷🏼♀️
ICONS, all of them and it physically hurts me when grown people don't have any idea who they are. I have to keep reminding myself that not everyone is as musically learned, as I was so lucky to be growing up. Kudos to you, (and the other reactors) making efforts to widen your musical horizons and learn.
Your reaction to this could not have been more poignant. I will never forget sitting in traffic in NYC when this was played for the first time. Traffic literally stopped. A very special piece of music.
This did happen in contemporary times for the earthquake in Haiti, I like the one you just watched the best but the Haiti version is also great with loads of huge, talented musicians
Boy this brings back memories ! As a child of the 80’s all of these artists were so popular you could pick out every artist just by hearing the song on the radio! So yes, CANDY! Is definitely the right word!!!
This was every great act of the 80's. They stopped class in school and put this on the TV's for us to watch when it came out. LIke, hey kids, this is history happening right here, even if you are too young to appreciate it right now, one day people will ask where you were when you first heard this song.
Thank you! Check out the British predecessor "Do they know it's Christmas" for more of the same. And of course the Band Aid concert. Bob Geldof of the Boomtown Rats was knighted for taking the initiative to all of this.
4:02 “I bow down to you sirs and madams.” As you should. This is probably the greatest musical collaboration that has ever happened and we will never see its like again. Every single singer involved in this project is/was an absolute legend in their own right. After nearly 4 decades this song still brings me to tears. It was such a labor of love, but more than that it was SUCH an important project. In the mid-1980s a terrible and devastating famine was ravaging Ethiopia and people were dying by the thousands. By the time it finally ended over a million people had died. Those images, especially the ones of the sick and emaciated children, have never left me. It was absolutely heartbreaking. This project raised over $60 million for famine relief and this song is still earning money. Again, I doubt we will ever see a collaboration of this magnitude again. Artists today are simply too superficial and self-absorbed.

I got bonus points for recognizing the rest of the Jackson clan, Bette Midler, Harry Belafonte (I'm Proud of that one!) and John Oates in the chorus. BUT, I lose many points (and my nerd card) for not recognizing the man next to Harry Belafonte was Dan Aykroyd. sigh.
@@trekkiexb5 wow! That's impressive, well done!.
After all these years I never knew Sheila E. was one of the singers!
I remember this. These were the biggest stars in the music world at the time and most arguably in history. The hits from the artist on that stage are countless. I'm 48 so I remember them all.
When this song was released Ethiopia was in a deathly famine. Both the USA and Britain made songs for charity on famine relief to help get needed food to these people. It was a heart felt experience and a sense of unity behind the driving force.
Other countries did as well
How have you never heard of this song before? My aunt from Spain who doesn't speak a lick of English used to sing, "who eeeee rrrrrr da whirl..." In the summer of 1985 months after it was a hit. This is like the 1992 dream team for basketball but with music.
It never ceases to amaze me that reactors recognize Michael Jackson but not Diana Ross considering the deep connection those two had.
The show was a Who's who of 70s Greats and even some of the 60s and fifties legends were there.
@@kenperk9854 I'm old enough to remember when snakes still had legs. My age is showing because I recognized almost all of them including one of my heartthobs Harry Belafonte
@@Xcris_crosX LMAO!! I may have to use that snake line. One of my favorites has always been to say "Yeah, I know I'm old. I'm old as dirt. I was around when the dinosaurs were here. I used to ride one to the gay bars." 🤣
And resemblance. No disrespect.
You can pick any name from the list of soloists and chorus members and you’ll find so many great songs! Legends!
Mr.L...I truely enjoyed watching your reaction of this video....I grew up with these singers..
The part I love the most is that they took the time to come together and give of themselves. No Zoom, No Skype.
It all started with one Man Bob Geldolf who did a Christmas song called
do they know it's Christmas time at all.
(Please reference this as well) formed an English super group, then America did ours soon after. This all led too a multi national day of free concerts broadcast live on every channel world wide. A highlight of humanity!!!!
I'm 60
I know
so glad you said that. not many people nowadays are giving bob geldoff the recognition for instigating all this!
I grew up in the 80s. It was a wonderful decade for so many reasons, the collaborations by musicians for charitable causes being one of the biggest. I wish our younger generations today could experience something as beautiful and selfless.
Paid for, AllMost exclusively by white entertainers and philanthropists.
@@pisces228 wow, all of those 60s and 70s legends in one place! INCREDIBLE!
Ageless!
This was a big thing for charity. So exciting when it came out. I still enjoy it every time.
When Americans Stood Together. Watching this again broke my heart. Great reaction man. Much love
I remember when this came out, I'm still amazed to this day. These artists came together and you couldn't see any ego.
I’m soooo surprised this is new to you and so many others. Everyone heard this years ago and sang along in our cars!! 😋
This song probably came out 15 years before he was born. Time flies
@@Sampsonoff I dont think he's 21 😂
These guys are young. To situate this, I was born in 66 and I wouldn't know the majority of artists who were producing during the year l was born. Do you know what l mean?
So true
You will never find these people or any one of their talents on a single room again. These were the true icons of our music history
Brings so many memories.
I remember when this seemingly impossible talents came together for such an amazing cause.
You’re correct, impossible not to smile.
Perhaps shed a tear or two as well.
So enjoyed revisiting this.
Thank you.
Amen
I love the message! Thank you!
"The guy from Ghost Busters" is Dan Akroyd, AKA Elwood Blues of the Blues Brothers.
Aykroyd...🧐🤪
@@chrismeyer9402 Thanks!
I knew that didn't look right.😖
He ended up as part of that recording session by happenstance.
You should prob react to all of these people. They all have🔥 hits.
There was one not long ago ( bridge over troubled water - by artists of grenfell ) has a lot of recent artists
Even then it was hard. For example, Prince is missing. But still many top singers are there.
They did redo the song and it is called We Are The World 25 For Hati.
They did one for Haiti. Not sure how old it is now.
Quincy put a sign outside the door: "Check ego here." haha
Prince did not want to sing with everyone, so he decided to do his own song. What a putz.
Your reaction was so worth the watch.
I’m surprised that you didn’t know who Tina Turner was. She was the one you said looked very familiar.
You'll be surprised at how many of the reactors don't know Tina Turner. They are definitely missing out.
Tina was a 60s and 70s great and lasted into the boring 80s.
I loved watching you enjoy the greatness that this was.
The music in the eighties was amazing within each genre. I’m showing my age.
Thank those 60s and 70s artists! The 80s would have been a baron cesspool without all of the 60s and 70 greats!
80s music..written, produced and performed by 60s and 70s Greats. 😆
These were all absolute musical legends at this point in time.
Something you will never see again.
What about Lil Dicky - Earth?
@@therealduz-t6762 NO
Those 60s and 70s Legends put on a show for the world! Murray head and taco represented the 80s.
Enjoyed watching that with you, sir!
Born in the 80s and I still got like 2/3 of them.
Were you surprised at who you didn't recognize? That was a studio full of legends!
I recognized all of them due to my advanced age, lol. These are all the great artists of MY generation, massive talent, and with Quincy producing and arranging, it doesn’t get any better.
❤
All the stars that did this song went into a studio for recording right after a Music Awards show. Most of your guesses on artists were correct! God Bless You Sir!
'85" still have this 45 record single.Brought it to my 6th grade xmas party everyone loved it.This song will never get old for me. I feel hope each and every time I play it. Brilliant.I believe it was produced for the famine relief in Africa. There's another 'super group" can't remember there name but the song was Feed the world,Do they know its Christian time. 80s artists also gives you that good feeling inside.✌
Feed the World was put our by the British singers at this same time and Canada sang Tears Are Not Enough, also for the 1985 relief in Ethiopia.
@@davidpost428 Yes, I remember it was Boy George, George Michael and other British artists but the name of the group escapes me.Was it just "British artists "?Nevertheless it's a wonderful song that also will never get old. Thanks for the info.about the Canadian group who also had a song out for the famine relief in Ethiopia.I'm excited to check that version out.✌
@@brookehornback1896 the name of the group was Band Aid.

These are ALL icons of the 80s. This was the pinnacle of the mid 80s. 1985, it was. And it was glorious.
THis was one of the greatest collaborations…
Always gives me goosebumps. ❤️❤️

1:22 Stevie Wonder
1:41 Paul Simon
1:46 Kenny Rogers
2:04 Tina Turner
2:10 Billy Joel
2:17 Michael Jackson
2:50 Diana Ross
3:05 Dionne Warwick
3:13 Willie Nelson
3:42 Bruce Springsteen
3:49 Kenny Loggins
4:12 Steve Perry
4:18 Daryl Hall
4:30 Huey Lewis
4:37 Cyndi Lauper
4:44 Kim Carnes
5:19 John Oates (Dark Hair With Mustache).
5:33 Bob Dylan
6:12 (Yeah that is Dan Aykroyd from Ghost Busters)
7:11 Ray Charles

Gosh, I’m old! I remember when this came out and I can name ALL of the singers! I am shocked that you didn’t know more of these great artists! You must be a whole lot younger than me! 😂 This song never gets old no matter how old it is!!
What always surprises me is that so many young people recognize Steve Perry when he only has one line and he retired from performing in 1998 due to health problems. He has such a memorable voice.
absolutely legendary!
Her voice is absolutely amazing. That is the voice of Miss Diana Ross.
Im glad youre doing reactions to music because if you dont know most of these singers youre in for a hellava ride!
I remember when that song come out. We need that kind of love again. Everyone put their difference aside and came together for the greater good
I loved it when you shook your head and commented on what a beautiful voice DIANNA ROSS had lol lol
The 80's were amazing with musical charity benefits, We are the World (US for Africa), Live from Wembly(Live Aid), Farm Aid. it was amazing to hear all the amazing musicians that came together for great causes.
It's not US (United State) for Africa.
It's USA for Africa as in United Support of Artists for Africa
it was a huge, major fundraiser for Africa. u wish I remembered how much they raised. it was phenomenal.
To TRULY appreciate THIS video you have to watch 'the making' of this video. It was a work of love by everyone there. Absolutely recommend it.
"Oh bro, this video is gonna get *SUPER* blocked."
I lost it. xD
it did get Super BLocked i had to reupload transparent lol
I remember this like it was yesterday, just amazing to me that people don't know what it is, or who all those singers are!
ICONS, all of them and it physically hurts me when grown people don't have any idea who they are. I have to keep reminding myself that not everyone is as musically learned, as I was so lucky to be growing up. Kudos to you, (and the other reactors) making efforts to widen your musical horizons and learn.
The majority of people just don't know what people look like, I know most If not all of these names but not the faces.
@@JustKelso1993 and probably their voices. I hear ya!
This might be my favorite reactive vid of yours.
Your reaction to this could not have been more poignant. I will never forget sitting in traffic in NYC when this was played for the first time. Traffic literally stopped. A very special piece of music.
Loved that Quincy Jones jnew his group and had a sign on the door to the studio for thr stars. " Check your ego at the door".
I'm always amazed when people don't recognise people like Diana Ross and Tina Turner, many others too but 2 of the most iconic female singers ever 😯
Looooved your reaction! ❤️❤️
This did happen in contemporary times for the earthquake in Haiti, I like the one you just watched the best but the Haiti version is also great with loads of huge, talented musicians
I was about 6 years old when this came out...one of my favorite songs!
Think you confused “heal the world” with this song. React to Bruce Springsteen you were impressed by him heaps here
Maybe, Springsteen and Morello doing Ghost of Tom Joad together, since he's already a Morello fan.

Boy this brings back memories ! As a child of the 80’s all of these artists were so popular you could pick out every artist just by hearing the song on the radio! So yes, CANDY! Is definitely the right word!!!
A more recent version, from 2010, “We are the World 25” for Haiti relief. Love watching you!
YES PLEASE DO THIS ONE
It was horrible!
It wasn't like this though. I don't think any of the following collaborations can compare. And this was a very diverse group in every way
this is another good version
You will never see this much talent in one room every again and remember most of theses guys where in there 40s and 50s
There is "We Are Stars" - Hearing Aid that was metal and "Do they know it's Christmas Time" - Band Aid that was like new wave.
Band aid was British artists. Mainly the most popular pop artists in Britain and produced by Bob Geldoff.
There is also We Are The World 25 For Hati.
You're right this song is just amazing. it brings so much warmth to me while i listen to it i cant help but smile while listening to it.
The amount of sold albums, and number 1 songs between all of them 😳
90% of the sales are MJs tho😌
How sad you did not know Tina Turner, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Kenny Rogers, Al Jarreau, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins , Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Teddy Pendergrass, Steve Perry, Darryl Hall, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, Kim Carnes, Harry Belafonte, Bette Midler, Lindsey Buckingham, and BOB DYLAN????? Wow
This never gets old…and yes…smile all through. It was an incredibly selfless event.
And each year these greats dying off....😞 so appreciative to have grown up in this hopeful era......what happened?
I miss Michael Jackson. RIP.
Beautiful song. We need more of this kind of Love and Care today.
