Growing Potato Plant Time Lapse - Sprouting Eyes to Potatoes (90 Days)

  • Time lapse of growing eyes of potatoes into harvestable tubers over 90 days. The eye was cut off of a store-bought russet potato that stayed forgotten in its storage for a while. It was then planted in a container with potting soil. The plant was growing fast with strong roots and blooming into lots of flowers. After 90 days, we decided to harvest tubers and their size is really pixie cute. It probably need a larger planting container, to begin with, in order to achieve the typical russet potatoes size.

@@yair5043 they were quite small potatoes so they gave me small potatoes when I harvested but was super cool to grow my own. I highly recommend to do the same if you have old potatoes growing eyes in your cupboard

It's kind of cool kind of ghetto, but I grew some on accident throwing skins out the back door of the trailer. They were damn good too

@@Itsjessxx If you want bigger potatoes from smaller potatoes, just make sure they have no more than 2 eyes on them so that all of the energy goes into growing those two sprouts, otherwise, it uses all the energy to grow all the eyes resulting in smaller potatoes, which is still cool, just a tip is all :)

Had half a bag of giant russets sprout on me in early spring. Prepped my raised beds with fresh, fertile soil and planted the 12 russets. Three weeks of typical Chicago “spring” weather (snow/rain/hot/cold) later, and the plants are already huge. Can’t wait to dig em up in August!

Did you plant them quite shallow or closer to the top?
I'm trying to grow potatoes and was told to plant them shallow and cover the leaves with soil everytime the leaves sprout through, but the last time I did that, I got to the top of my pot and then the leaves just stopped growing and died

British weather has been the same this year. Planted some white maincrops about 100 days ago, had ok results with the ones I pulled 10 days ago, will wait a few more days to pull the second lot out.
Coincidentally, I planted russets that chitted in the cupboard about ten days ago!

Don't harvest right after flowering, potatoes should be harvested when the green dries, that's the sign that the plant ended it's cycle, until then they still grow.
Of course there are some special types of potatoes you want to harvest early before they develop thicker skin or you prefer the smaller ones.

Not only do they have flowers they turn into what looks like a green cherry tomato that contain the seeds of the plant. No good to eat though! Not surprising since potatoes and tomatoes are in the same family!
