My ten year old son plants potatoes in his garden every year and he always has me grab the blue potatoes as soon as they come in stores so he can choose a red and "regular" to grow along with them. He cares for them all season then has me make him a red, white and blue potato meal every year lol. This year he plans on making a roast with his patriotic potatoes in his star wars crock pot! Just a heads up if you try to cook the blue in different ways, sometimes they turn grey but still taste fine.

Potatoes also are great for giving the soil a break after an intense growing season. I like to rotate them in after I've grown tomato or brassica, things that are really taxing on the soil, and then grow legumes after that to help replenish nitrogen.

But to save you time, basically some comments called Kevin “Eric” and Kevin made a joke post about how it was impacting him so severely. People doubled down and after a bit of back and forth, Kevin revealed that “eric” had had a little accident in the garden (much like people who cross the mob have accidents)

Best thing I ever did growing potatoes was to plant whole potatoes about 6"down in barely ammended clay soil, cover and forget it until plants died down. I didnt even water them. Lol. 4x4 bed got me a 5 gallon bucket of potatoes. Ill never mess around with potato growing again. Set it & forget it for me. :)
Perfect timing on this video! I wasn't planning to plant potatoes this year, but I found a random potato in perfect condition in my compost bin yesterday, so apparently I am now growing potatoes this year 😂

Early on in gardening I saw a video saying to just bury compost directly into raised garden beds... so then potatoes invaded everywhere in my garden just from the peels in my compost. ;D It was quite a chore digging them all out.
Corn starch is great for dusting cut edges of potatoes, it speeds up the drying time immensly and you get less chance of rot when you do plant

My second year at vegetable gardening. My first year at growing potatoes. I’m using my favorite potatoes, russet. The huge ones. I let a few grocery store potatoes grow eyes in my pantry, cut the eyes off, and planted them right off. I’ve got nice green potato plants coming up. I hope I get some to harvest.
I do the 5 gallon bucket way a little different. 4" of soil, put the potato down. Cover with enough soil to leave only about 4" from the top of the bucket. Then when the plant grows up out of the bucket put about 2-3" of soil. Then put mulch on top to protect the potatoes from the sun to prevent the green potato. Love your videos Kevin! I recommend you and a couple others to all new gardeners because you guys are easy to follow and are great teachers.

The first crop I planted in my brand new garden this year is potatoes! Red Norland, Blue Adirondack, and Yukon Gold. Flanked on either side of the bed by garlic to help protect against aphids. So excited for the crop!
I never has aphids on potatoes, just potato bugs.
I've been growing different potatoes each year and so far my favorite is purple Viking. Beautiful mottled skin - dark purple with kind of a rose color, and white flesh. Great for everything and tastes so good!
I planted a bag of small red potatoes February 2 and two bunches of green onions my sister picked up for me. I have a disability and can`t drive so I have to grow my own fresh produce or do without. I`m gonna use this planting to make seed potatoes and I may replant some in the fall. Transplanting green onions is a great way to have fresh green onion tops for a long time and eventually a lot of fresh seeds. I also planted a dozen more fruit trees a week ago and I`m growing Parisian Carrots to mass produce seeds since they were so expensive for so few. I have Danvers Half Long Carrots growing but I`m not sure how well they`ll do but I still have over 3000 more seeds to get it right. The Parisian Carrots are little round ones and very easy to grow. I want to try peanuts because we used to grow them.

@@SarahJustVlogs Thank you. I`m trying very hard. It was a big disappointment to discover that all the topsoil had been removed here. Everything has been a struggle. I had to do a lot of thinking to decide what I could do to fix this. Bringing in forest soil with a wagon is my only option besides using leaves, cover crops and grass clippings to create soil. So that`s the plan and it will continue for years.
I think you can grow peanuts in a bucket just put holes in bottom of the bucket.there was some showing this on you tube
@@helenedwards9508 I planted some peanuts in a bag of bird seed and they`re growing. I`ll save those for seeds. It`s less expensive to pick them out of bird seed than buy them online and you simply get scammed or ripped off.

Adirondack Blues are my favorites. You can't easily find them in grocery stores, so you have to grow them. The leaves of the plant are a beautiful purple bluish green, so they work well as decorative plants as well. The main drawback is the potatoes are such a dark blue color, they can be hard to spot in the soil when you're digging them up.

The Ruth Stout method works great up here in Vermont. I I throw them on the top of the ground covered with 8 to 12 inches of hay.
I may water them once a month maybe
It has the hay decomposes I’ll add another 6 to 8 inches by Midsummer
Harvesting is ridiculously easy. Move the hay to the side and grab the potatoes!
Do you remove the hay at the end of the year? Or just leave it there to decompose and add new stuff the next season?
@@adamjchafe I actually took my leftover hay that I had not used in the garden and threw that in the garden bed for the whole winter, to allow it to decompose.
Later on could we get an update on the grown bag and bucket potatoes, it would be pretty cool!

Ruth Stout was the sister of Rex Stout, author of the Nero Wolfe mystery books, for anyone who's interested.
Also, I read that she used salt marsh hay to mulch her garden. I haven't verified this, but apparently salt marsh hay does not have seeds (unlike regular hay), so she didn't have problems with seeds sprouting from her mulch.
Your videos inspired me not giving up on gardening, even tough this season was a nightmare haha, It was either days with crazy storms or days with a raging nuclear level sun. The watermelons vines only produced about 7 fruits, and the pumpkins/squash only 5, and small ones at that. But anyway, love the content and the cannel hosts ❤

I finally planted my potatoes yesterday after work. I wanted to get them in the ground 3-4 weeks ago but it has been raining so much in California I had to till my garden 3 times just to get the soil to dry out enough to plant. One thing to mention with potatoes, don’t water them till they sprout unless your soil is powder dry.
If you stop tilling your ground, yes, convert to no till using regenerative ag principles, in couple of years your soil will not even recognize buckets of rain as a problem... It will just pass right on through into storage... tilling is one of the ways to create a compaction layer about 6" down and that prevents the water from entering the soil, hence keeping the soil waterlogged. There's a whole book's worth of reasons to not till, but I don't want to write a book... research a bit, give it a try, you'll be impressed with yourself.

I use Tony's method of 1/3 soil, drop potato, 1/3 soil, 1/3 hay or straw.
I planted some of my potatoes in a mix of pine straw & weeds with some forest soil dumped on top. They`re about 4 or 5 inches under the straw and are growing. I`m making new soil with the straw and forest dirt and decided to make use of it as it decomposes.
Definitely recommend growing potatoes for anyone who hasn't or is considering it. Aside for getting the chitting part, growing potatoes is so easy and rewarding. They grow really quick, woth little intervention needed.

Im in a condo growing potatoes in buckets, I drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom and stacked it into another to make a cheap auto water planter.
The potato plants are almost as tall as I am now.
Perfect timing! I'm sprouting my first potatoes, and crossing my fingers that I'll be able to grow them. As a new gardener, I've been looking for a video that goes through a full growing season so I know what to plant, when, and in what order, plus when to harvest what you planted. Nice tee-shirt!😅 live in UK. When I plant potatoes in buckets/pots I fill the bucket to the top with compost. It makes no difference to the seed potato and how many potatoes you get, but it makes life easier as you don’t have to hill up.
I am trying grow bags for the first time this season. Thanks for the tips on rolling them down to get more sun on the soil!
I have planterd the ADK blues for years. My latest favorate is a variety named " blackberry". I believe they were introduced from Michigan State U. about three years ago. They are a deep purple so contain more antioxidants than the blues.
So something I learned that no one ever talks about is growing potatoes based on your climate. I have to grow early potatoes in my region (SE US) because it gets WAY too hot (like 95F-feels-like-105F-bc-of-humidity hot) in the middle of summer and the potatoes don’t do well because of it.
I always wondered why my potato harvests sucked. A) I would plant too late and B) it was too hot. So once I figured that out I bought all early potatoes so I should be good this season.
Makes sense why russets are grown in Idaho now.
You could probably get away with growing them in some shade. We get hot and humid so it’s just hot no matter what and the potatoes hate it.

Maybe the trick is to just plant potatoes every frkn month & then harvest whatever the weather produces that year!!
Yep that is a great addition here...heat DOES matter! It's better to put in part shade if you're hitting that level of heat in summer

Good information. I have been growing potatoes 55 years and lived in 3 different states. What works in 1 geographical location does not work in another location. A 3 eye seed potato will grow 3 stems and each stem will grow 1 lb of new potatoes that = 3 lbs of new potatoes. A 5 eye potatoes will grow 5 stems and 5 lbs of new potatoes. An 8 eye seed potato might grow 8 lbs of new potatoes but its best to cut an 8 eye potatoes in 1/2 to make 2 cuttings with 4 eyes each. The best seed potatoes are golf ball size with 1 or 2 eyes per seed potato spaced about 4" apart. Space seed potatoes according to the number of eyes on each seed potato. I plant 5 eye seed potatoes 8" spacing a 30 ft row will have 45 seed potatoes and should produce about 225 lbs of new potatoes. Weather, rain, soil all determine crop size. I live in TN if I plant potatoes April 1st harvest is about July 1st we are having 100° weather with no rain my garden is dry as desert I must water to have a good harvest. If I plant potatoes Aug 1st I get larger harvest Nov 1. If I plant March 1st that is good too unless we have too much rain. Last spring we had 37" of rain March to May. Potatoes are very tricky to grow but not hard to grow, everything needs to be perfect to get the best maximum size harvest. Keep seed potatoes at 75°f or warmer in bright shade to break the doormat cycle. I start sprouting my seed potatoes Jan 1 to plant March 1 or April 1. I wash seed potatoes to remove natural enzymes that prevent sprouting.
I have potatoes that started growing into plants by themselves; now I feel guilty throwing them out...we have clay soil. To be honest I probably won't ever dig them up to see if they grew any potatoes... We obviously don't eat many potatoes or they wouldn't have grown into plants while sitting in the container waiting for somebody to finally eat them....
❓So why bother growing even MORE potatoes, when we never ate the first ones ?❓☹️❓🤔❓

You'll kill fewer worms if you loosen the ground w/a fork, rather than a shovel. I use a 4-tined fork to loosen the soil (even in my containers) because my homemade compost is loaded with worms, and I hate cutting them in half as I loosen my soil. Wider broadforks are excellent as well.
I picked up Adirondack blue potatoes too. Im hoping to pick up some red norland and gold yukon also. Gold yukon makes awesome mashed potatoes. Im thinking of putting all my feed bags to use to grow my potatoes because I need to keep critters from eating them. Plus, i have lots of bags.
I’m a starter gardener so this video helped a lot that’s why tomorrow I’m going to grow some more potatoes
Great shirt Kevin. The norland red is a great potato. I've grown them for the last 3 years as well as the blue potato.
2:14 I grew those Adirondack blue potatoes last year. 1st potatoes I've grown. 3lb bag of seed potatoes produced 40 lbs. Was super happy. I also planted 3 lbs of russets evenly split between a raised row and just breaking up some ground. I got a lot better yield from the raised row.

I use wood ash to coat cut potatoes, it has worked well for me in regards to spoilage factor.

I absolutely love the shirt LOL😅 also perfect timing for your potato video I planted some random potatoes from my pantry that we're starting to grow roots at the bottom of my freshly cleaned out garden bed. Funny story we had a couple good friends here in Arizona so about a couple weeks later are weeds were growing like wildfire all around are raised garden bed, so one morning we went out there and I told my husband oh my gosh look at all these weeds growing out of our garden bed the weeds must have dropped their seeds so we started pulling them out after the third one out I remembered I had planted the potatoes at the bottom and those were the tops LOL LOL LOL😅😅😅😅😅 it's okay they're still all doing great and I just talked them off with more soil my first year growing potatoes LOL

Grass clippings and leaves also work fine for the Ruth Stout method, and I even used twigs with leaves that I cut from my hedge and shredded with the lawnmower :D

Yes!! I'm in zone 7/8 and it's super confusing trying to apply a lot of Kevin's advice here lol
@ForestFire369 I'm in zone 7B and I kinda like that Kevin is a few weeks ahead. It gives me time after watching a vid to plan out how I'm gonna plant that crop instead of if he was on time or behind me, where it's usually too late for me to get the seeds started or what have you. Only becomes a problem towards the fall as I can't overwinter nearly as many things as he can.
Grow zones can be deceiving when using them for when to plant. They are mostly important to know the coldest
days of the year in regards to whether certain plants, mostly perennials, can survive while dormant in Winter
months. You're better off knowing your 1st and last "avg" frost dates when it comes to garden veg, mostly annuals.
And knowing what plants are cold hardy. Good Luck
This was actually great because i hadn't planned on growing taters but I just planted a bunch from a bag that was starting to sprout/go bad so I buried them throughout the garden 👌

Last growing season I tried just tossing my seed potatoes into my bucket and filling to the top instead of hilling. (Red Pontiac and Russets). There was no difference in harvest between years I slowly hilled or just filled the bucket. Just saved time by dumping the soil in right away.
Still 30cm of snow here in Finland. Can't wait until June!

One of my favorite things about grow bag potatoes is that you can harvest by just dumping the bag out onto a tarp. No accidentally cutting into them with a shovel. I also love how easy it is to hill them up.

I LOVE TONY ❤I’m trying his planting method this year in a grow bag and it’s been so easy. His channel is amazing!
The blue addies are awesome. Grew them for the first time last year. They are waxy IMO. Cooked and ate like Norlands, Pontiacs, etc. One added benefit was consistent size. Hardly any mico/baby tubers. Most were either perfect seed potato size or bigger.

I seen another video comparing single chit potatoes compared to multiple chits the multiples chits produced muktiple baby or new potatoes and the single chits produced huge spuds but not so many . When the weight was added the multiples were a but more but it was close to the same...hey wait, wasnt that you and Jaques who did that spud plantung comparison? ....Maybe it was Eric
What it would be like to have an epic editor that wasn't Ai. If a person sells potatoes they have abundance of, the smaller new potato varieties usually sell for more $ than the huge russet or starchier spuds used for baking or fries...same tho more extreme goes for pumpkins. The Giants usually grown sold for only ten cents per lb and the designer mini pumpkins

My Granny would dust the cut ends with sulfer and let them set for a day before planting them. Gardening in NE Florida here.
