I had a similar thing happen we hen i first started planting potatoes- i had too much Nitrogen (i added Blood Meal & Feather meal along with my bone meal. Blood Meal & Feather meal are both a lot of Nitrogen plus my miracle grow feed) Sounds like you had too much Nitrogen & it fed your green leaves but you had no potassium & phosphorus to feed your tubers to grow. You should prep your soil with compost & manure, & bone meal & I put just a scant amount of Blood Mea if any at all. Put a nice large serving of bone meal under your potatoes (and mixed into the soil prior) when putting in your trench, grow bag or container, raised bed or whatever they will be using by then. I also put Azomite (micro/macro nutrients) powder in when I plant & a little shake of Miracle Grow Shake n Feed which is long term (over 3 months) Veggie/Plant food- I mix the soil up & then plant my Chittend potatoes. Then water real good.
Just planted my very first potato a week ago. Maybe a little late for my area, but I see the sprouts coming up. I'm now hooked and need to grow even more!

Thanks Jag. I use Epsoma Tomatotone to fertilize my potatoes and mulch with pinestraw. It's been doing well but I'm open to any form of positive information. Your videos give plenty!
@LittleBitOfSunshine4u just keep adding mulch just like you would dirt or add the dirt on the mulch and mulch again. Removing the mulch can pull the plant up. Especially if you aren't growing in the ground

I'm doing mine in a cardboard box with about 4 inches of soil, worm castings, and the rest leaves and it is sitting one one of those wooden spools about 2 feet off the ground. I have noticed that several of my DIY seed potatoes have nice thick sprouts that are developing leaves. So far they are doing really well.

I can always tell a channel in a coastal area or a mild climate! Meanwhile, here in the middle of the continent, if I followed that temperature advice, I could literally never plant potatoes. I had some frost damage on corn this year on May 1. The average last frost date is in mid-April. I had several days in March when temperatures exceeded the maximum recommended temperature, though, more in April, and most of May every year exceeds those limits. I planted on the last day of February this year, by the way, and used lots of row covers. Because the temperatures are so cold early in the season, they don't get good growth, but even squeezing out every day I can, temperatures will regularly be in the 90's before they're ready for harvest and the plants will be suffering. Yeah, that's not great, but it really can't be helped. Sweet potatoes do much better here, and most of mine went in the ground about two weeks ago.
I'm in zone 2b, northern Canada. We will chit our heritage tubers in April,inside,then plant beginning May.... im growing this year in 100% 6 yr old steer manure. Will check for PH & and add Dolomite Lime to reduce PH to prevent scab.
Im growing them for the first time this year. Have 2 large buckets and one smaller one. The smaller one I put in half a potato, 1 large on i stuck 1 full potato, and the other large i stuck in 2 half potatos so Ill see in a couple months which method worked best for me. Im also growing garlic for the first time and those plants grow fast but heard they take a long time to get any garlic bulbs.
Number 8) be sure to mound up your spud plants to avoid the spuds coming into direct contact with sun light, if the potatoes do, they will turn green and become toxic.

Everything depends entirely upon your soil. Is it acidic or alkaline, clay or sandy, loose or compacted, nutrient rich or poor, well draining or too dry or too wet, alive or dead (microbiome), etc. Amend accordingly. Ask (and research) what is the purpose of Biochar and what does it do for the soil and to the pH, moisture retention vs drainage, nutrients, etc. Same for things like wood ash, sand, coir, etc. What works well for one type of soil and pH can be very detrimental for another type of soil and pH or may do nothing at all because equivalent to what already have. First, have to know your own soil and what it requires.
I'm in the Northern Hemisphere that rarely has a frost date 🤷 but temps did plummet into the low 30''s this year - and night temps are still in upper 30's, but daytime is 65-70° - quite the difference! I'm in Northern California - about 10 miles from the foothills to the Sierras. We've had an unusual cold winter, and already 4 Atmospheric rivers have dumped tons of rain - with the 5th predicted for Sunday through Tuesday night. Then, temps will quickly heat up! Im still going to plant potatoes today - I'll put them on the north side out of the South winds that will hit hard and dry us up🤞
Depends -- based upon your description could be early blight which is bad or could just be anthocyanin which is a harmless response to excessive exposure to air, LED lighting, or cooler temps. Google up early blight as well as anthocyanin and see if you can find photos to look at for comparison. Good luck!
Research results by agricultural science remain mixed over many decades so there is no definitive answer. I never have in over 45 years, but others say they experienced smaller yields if they didn't remove them -- so general observations and real life experiences also tend to be mixed. Theoretically, if the flowers fruit then more effort is going into the fruiting than into tuber (potato) development. Personally, I've never seen any flowers start fruiting -- they just die off without fruiting. Have only ever seen in photographs and know that they are toxic. I've never known commercial growers to do so; too labor intensive for such large crops yet they still grow large potatoes. When flowering and up until flowers beginning to whither, however, is good time to harvest fingerling/new potatoes -- good for canning whole -- harvest some for canning new potatoes and leave the other plants to finish growing for large potatoes.

they might rotate without eyes, but usually they still grow just a few weeks without eyes... you can rush them if you wrap them in wet paper towels and put them on a window sill with an onion

However, even if successful, you won't have control over the number of chits and too many could lead to smaller potatoes and lower yield. Each chit is a primary stem and the more stems the more energy going into the extra stems and foliage instead of the production and growth of tubers/potatoes.

It’s one of the reasons I do it. Saved £800 working my allotment last year as well as getting exercise, enjoying my hobby and eating tasty organic produce.
Garden produce is already going up in price in our supermarkets. Other than not knowing if commercial producers are being ecologically responsible, you save carbon by not having to drive to the store, or for their big trucks to drive hundreds of miles to bring you potatoes. No plastic bags, no underpaid workers, and you know they are fresh, not months old. Try a local produce stand if you don't feel like growing your own. Equally conscious minded.

Do you add more dirt to "hill" them? Do you have to move the mulch out of the way first or do you just put it on top of it?

six to eight hours a day, but more is ok, they don't like it over 80 degrees however

4-4-2 to start, then a month in go with 1-6-8, or 2-4-10. All fertilizers are N-P-K.
I like to use a general organic fertilizer to start, and some bone meal.
Basically when you first plant use a high nitrogen fertilizer and after a month use a high potassium fertilizer

Honestly if I'm spending money on fertilizer than it's a bust for me. I can buy ten lbs for 5 bucks. So you lost me at mathematically unfeasible!
Garden produce is already going up in price in our supermarkets. Other than not knowing if commercial producers are being ecologically responsible, you save carbon by not having to drive to the store, or for their big trucks to drive hundreds of miles to bring you potatoes. No plastic bags, no underpaid workers, and you know they are fresh, not months old. Try a local produce stand if you don't feel like growing your own. Equally conscious minded.

I use wood ash from alder and coffee grounds.
Wood ash is alkaline, opposite of what you want to do with potatoes.
This is the second time I've watched this video. I decided to NOT plant potatoes this year.
