Absolutely my favorite country song. Even more than my old country heroes. Its profound. The excellent band makes it perfect. Im usually crying by " his momma believes in the pentacost ".
HOW IN THE WORLD does this only have 800ish likes.... this country man.... geez... Lucinda is a NATIONAL TREASURE and most people have never even heard of her. what a fuu cked up series of events.
Her family were tight with a poet laureate. Its said he and Lucinda had their own relationship for a time. Here she doesn't sing about any of that. Instead she writes poignantly ofthe aftermath of his suicide and how it affected different people without interjecting herself more than superficially. Magnificent.
The lyrics…just straight, simple, consequences. No interpretation, no resolution, no background, no moral. All we need is an unadorned description of what went down. And from that, we get the full picture and impact. Genius. God bless.
Great poet, Frank Stanford, "The Battlefield Where The Moon Says I Love You," died much too soon. But not forgotten. Thanks, Lucinda, for this tribute to your friend.
Two out of three firearm deaths in the US are suicides. White middle-aged rural men are vastly over-represented in that total. I wonder how many of them have their gun pried from their cold dead fingers.
This song always takes my breath away, It is almost word for word what happened when my daughter's brother-in-law did exactly the same thing that Sonny did. My son-in-law and his father were left the vivid memories....while everyone else sat in shock. I love you Lucinda...look forward to seeing you at The Tower in OKC on 10/3.
Kenny Vaughn is one of my favorite guitarists to listen to........ he's in touch with tasteful most of the time........ very good feel for the song.......
Actually, despair might never pass. And the “forever” part is sometimes the most tempting thing about suicide. But the thing is, like this song illustrates, it doesn’t matter: we just can’t do it to the people who love us.
What a friggin ensemble. Then she starts belting this country dirge. I saw her with a 3 piece band couple of years ago. None of these fine gentlemen. The guitarist was a young buck who was exceptional.
Premier morceau du formidable concert de décembre 1998. Lucinda Williams est parfaite. Jim Lauderdale est la deuxième voix. Les deux guitaristes sont super. Déjà vingt ans, Lucinda avait 45 ans, elle était superbe !
There are three fantastic guitar players on that stage: Kenny Vaughan probably is best known but Jim Lauderdale on acoustic is no slouch. However, I think that’s John Jackson playing that awesome slide on the Strat. He also plays that electric mandolin guitar on other tracks.

Only America makes these individuals.

Magnificent.
My nephew did the deed back on March 8, 2023. I feel that i've lived this song.
She always had such a good band, some serious players there.
The lyrics…just straight, simple, consequences. No interpretation, no resolution, no background, no moral. All we need is an unadorned description of what went down. And from that, we get the full picture and impact. Genius. God bless.
Born and raised in Pineola, his mama believed in the Pentacost!

It was whispered they were more than friends for a time ..
Good to find im not the only one who finds light in a dark one like this
Country music doesn't get more real than this.
I would not call it Country. It is Southern Gothic.
Absolutely. it's true Country.

Beautiful haunting tune just pulls you in to listen to this story only Lucinda can tell not to mention that crazy tight band, god bless you all 😊😊😊
I can't stop listening to this rusty jewel
My God, Lucinda’s voice and a slide guitar
Very much under appreciated. Or known to all that many .
Magnificent! song! I lost my sweet nephew... a casualty of the Iraq war. I never knew the pain that he was enduring.
Lost my nephew to suicide a little over a month ago. A lot of this song rings true. All the best to you and yours!
I talked to my nephews mom this morning… we reminsed 🎉what a beautiful human being he was!!!
My brother lost a son about that time and this brings it back like a painting, pain fixed in time.
Yep, that's about as good as it gets.
Yep
AMEN
incredible lyrics, great story telling based from real life, and great songwriting by Lucinda. This song always sends a chill thru me
The masterpiece painting with music
Hey Lucy you just made my list of immortal icons with that one
Suicide is a terrible terrible mistake; if anyone is in despair they should know that it WILL PASS. Suicide is forever.
Actually, despair might never pass. And the “forever” part is sometimes the most tempting thing about suicide. But the thing is, like this song illustrates, it doesn’t matter: we just can’t do it to the people who love us.

God, this is something, and there is a link to the song Awakening only live
Don't get me to crying … I haven't even had a beer yet.
Sweet mercy...
Wow. Just brilliant. I love Lucinda Williams.
Greetings from Madrid, Spain, Lucinda, I like you music very much. It´s really great.
That can’t be beat. Tied maybe, but never beaten.
OMG this so good.
That BAND !
A handful of dust; I just love all of this. Lucinda and the band at their greatest...
Great song, great band.
I don't dig country typically but I love this!
Because this is Americana genre. Or Insurgent Country. Jason Isbell is in this genre too. So much great music. Go down that rabbit hole.
Me encanta. I love Lucinda´s music. She is great.
Flat out amazing...epic.
Such a happy, joyous song.
Anything, no matter how good the music she makes may be....it will always take back stage to this womens natural sensuality.
Grey Mac yes! i too am too horny to pay full attention to how great of a song writer she is!!
lol ew
Nice lead guitar..He rocks...
He sure as hell does.
"Dust to dust, ashes to ashes." NOBODY GETS OUT OF HERE ALIVE.

Angel🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
knockout, literate southern story-telling in the flannery o'connor tradition.
A masterpiece
As real as it gets.
This is a hauntingly beautiful story of loss. Lucinda is a treasure. Is that Jim Lauderdale playing the other acoustic guitar?
It is.
this shit gets my eyes watering OH LAWD
Guess I didn't realize that Jim Lauderdale had played with Lucinda. Cuzin Kenny Vaughan too
Mark......I just picked up on that fact as well.
That kenny Vaughan.....have you listened to the fabulous Superlatives? Marty Stuart and band doin psychedelic country...can ya believe it?
10 days before my first daughter was born.
Awesome l
It is unreal...
Unfortunately, it all *too* real…
Hey CMA you've missed a few good ones. She belongs with the
Masters
💖💥💖💥💖🙏
I fear that before these guitar players get the recognition they deserve, they'll just be two more van Goths. Why doesn't she have them with her!

That nerd is really rocking out
Kenny Vaughn
