I just read her book (Don't Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You) and then listened to her whole catalog again and appreciated it on another level. I've probably listened to this song 20 times this week.
Doug Pettibone gets amazing sounds out of the guitar! First time I heard a solo of his was on Lucinda Williams' song "Righteously". His slow bends makes the guitar sound like a wounded animal, & the guitar is just on the edge of feedback distortion, but he manages to control it. Gives me chills.
I love Doug’s guitar playing. He can do this wild on the edge of self destruction distortion rock ‘n roll, but he can also play more traditional “country”. Then listen to “Ventura” live at Farm Aid and he has the lightest, most melodic touch on the pedal steel.
Man Doug Pettibone is pulling the tone from somewhere down deep. Haunting harmony vocal the blend is perfect on Lucinda' slow southern drag. Always love her phrasing great songwriter!
The lyrics - if you have ever felt overcome by your feelings for someone, maybe someone who is not good for you, who makes you do things you never thought you would do, then these lyrics say it all for you.
Great live at the Tarrytown Music Hall in March 2017. Perfect venue for Ms. Williams and her band. The above guitarist playing on Essence is a remarkably awesome harmonizer. Top shelf, really knows how to blend his tone with hers. A true talent. Plus he's an amazing guitarist! Psychedelia. xox I'm in love Oh, and the drummer keeps better that perfect time, another treat. Bass rocks! Man, such a great band.
"...Make me wonder who's in charge..." Damn that girl can write! The whole "love is like heroin" songwriting vein (pun intended) has really never been nailed as well as this song does it.
My first time to hear her music. Nice song. My wife loves Carrie Underwood and I can't stand to hear her. This guitar sounds like Neal Young's Into The Blue stuff, which I love that sound. I]m 56 and I'm just getting around to this band. Go figure.
my favorite lucinda williams song. whenever i listen to the album "essence", i always hit the "repeat track", then let this play 5 or 6 times. best half hour of my life every time!
It’s so cool that he can switch back and forth between that nasty, gnarly fuzz tone and a relatively clean rhythm. At one point he flips on some wacky delay (?) just for a few notes - and it fits perfectly. I would love to see him play live.
my favorite backing band of hers, (close second is breen, vaughan, hombre and jackson)... but Taras, Pettibone and the fab Jim E Christie on drums. Awesome!!
Lucinda is the REAL DEAL and her band live kicks some serious ass! They are amazing and being there LIVE is one night you will always remember. Lucinda ...stay well and honor us back in Pgh. terrie
Gary Louris of the jayhawks did the original backing vocals,on the album, which Lucinda then recorded two octaves higher in the final mix. It's pretty amazing the guy singing backup here can pretty much match that incredible performance from Louris.
baby sweet baby whisper my name shoot your love into my vein baby sweet baby kiss me hard make me wonder who's in charge.... Lucinda always gets right to it, whatever "it" is, in every song she tells the truth. That's what I love the most about her. Today I needed some real hard truth=telling music and youtube has so many of these amazing Lucinda videos. I saw her live at First Ave. in Mpls. years ago when she had the one and only Mr. Kenny Vaughan with her on guitar.
Baby, sweet baby, you're my drug Come on and let me taste your stuff Baby, sweet baby, bring me your gift What surprise you gonna hit me with I am waiting here for more I am waiting by your door I am waiting on your back steps I am waiting in my car I am waiting at this bar I am waiting for your essence Baby, sweet baby, whisper my name Shoot your love into my vein Baby, sweet baby, kiss me hard Make me wonder who's in charge I am waiting here for more I am waiting by your door I am waiting on your back steps I am waiting in my car I am waiting at this bar I am waiting for your essence Baby, sweet baby, I want to feel your breath Even though you like to flirt with death Baby, sweet baby, can't get enough Please come find me and help me get fucked up I am waiting here for more I am waiting by your door I am waiting on your back steps I am waiting in my car I am waiting at this bar I am waiting for your essence Your essence Your essence
IN-FRIGGIN-CREDIBLE!!!! Nobody can add to a Lu song like Pettibone! I was a little bummed that he was not with Buick 6 when I saw them last weekend. But Lu quickly soothed me of my disappointment.
I use to love meeting her when she came to town, always real nice and signed my cd's . Then she met her husband and all that changed. . Not blaming her.
Jimi, is that a photo of James Cagney? It looks like the poster of him that I used to have but I'm looking at it on my phone and my eyesight ain't what it used to be. My favourite actor of all time and I love Lucinda and her music very much too.
fantastic song...FANTASTIC...and great eyes, too! i've loved her for many many years and she just gets better each time. west" is just the greatest album too...although essence is great too.
@follepourchevaux exactly my feelings when i first heard this late at night on Q107, toronto. mesmerizing, can't tell anyone about this, too dangerous!
A very sexually suggestive song. It's almost raunchy. I kinda doubt she was asked to play this song on Good Morning America or even the talk shows. If Lucinda had trouble with tv people worrying about "Right On Time" then I think those same people would be helping Lucinda out of the door if she wanted to play this song. Then too, I guess it isn't about sex, but essence could be considered ejaculate and that is usually what is considered a man's essence.
I just had a thought. I know it’s perverse, but can you imagine if some dolt applied auto tune to Lucinda’s vocals? She’s got the most wonderful, unique vibrato in her voice. Not all the time - but it’s part of her signature sound. Computer “corrections” would ruin it.
I've also been very troubled by her decline in voice and appearance recently........I'm thinking maybe substance abuse. Very sad, she is so great. At least I got to hear her live a few years ago. I still love Car Wheels and the other CDs of hers I have.
oh man i saw her play last night at the WaMu at MSG in NYC.. she played this one boy was she on!!!! what a great show. i met the whole band except the drummer after the show on the street at 1 A.M. Before that I asked Lucinda to give me a hug and she started to come over but then her up tight security guards directed her towards the limo so she apologized and blew me a kiss
I just read her book (Don't Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You) and then listened to her whole catalog again and appreciated it on another level. I've probably listened to this song 20 times this week.
That is why rock will never die, Lucinda's a true rock poetess.
Finally! Someone else who noticed the genius of Doug Pettibone!
I love Doug’s guitar playing. He can do this wild on the edge of self destruction distortion rock ‘n roll, but he can also play more traditional “country”. Then listen to “Ventura” live at Farm Aid and he has the lightest, most melodic touch on the pedal steel.
I get goose bumps every time I hear this song. Lucinda is an American treasure.
I keep trying to leave Lucinda but she keeps drawing me back. Just love her.
Doug Pettitbone is a monster, they were both lucky to have each other -- Lucinda is an blazing star art hero.
One of the artists for which I own every recording. Love her stuff. She crosses so many musical genres, and does it so well . . .
+Marsha Rupe Well put Marsha... I mean Miss Rupe. (pardon me)
Man Doug Pettibone is pulling the tone from somewhere down deep. Haunting harmony vocal the blend is perfect on Lucinda' slow southern drag. Always love her phrasing great songwriter!
My god, those sounds that guy strangles outta that guitar - magnificent!
I've been saying since the first time I heard it. This is the sexiest song I've ever heard.
Haha, I know this comment was made a few years ago, but this is my thought exactly every time I hear it. Pure eroticism.
Absolutely right lol listening Jan/19
Yup
heroin is sexy?
Not so sure this song is all about drugs.
The lyrics - if you have ever felt overcome by your feelings for someone, maybe someone who is not good for you, who makes you do things you never thought you would do, then these lyrics say it all for you.

"...Make me wonder who's in charge..." Damn that girl can write! The whole "love is like heroin" songwriting vein (pun intended) has really never been nailed as well as this song does it.
Just fantastic-- Lucinda and the whole band. The short bass, drum and guitar fills in the first half of the song are so well done.
One of the most sensual songs I have ever heard .
Up there with PJ Harvey's 'Long Snake Moan'
why do they make anything else?? Lucinda is an all-time great who has not been recognized yet.
orbison22 well I think she won a Grammy or two, and sold a few million records so....
My first time to hear her music. Nice song. My wife loves Carrie Underwood and I can't stand to hear her. This guitar sounds like Neal Young's Into The Blue stuff, which I love that sound. I]m 56 and I'm just getting around to this band. Go figure.
better late than never
Buy the album WORLD WITHOUT TEARS, which features this same band. You will dig it!
You nailed it!
Ha... 65 & heard most of it, she rocks!!
Took me to 60. As long as you found it is whats important.
Lucinda still has it now in 2017. One of the most engaged, alive performers I have seen. She is real, no pretense.
The entire band rocks. They are all so in the pocket. Solid. Who's that wonderful drummer?
my favorite lucinda williams song. whenever i listen to the album "essence", i always hit the "repeat track", then let this play 5 or 6 times. best half hour of my life every time!
pettibone is just all around great
Yep. Im glad they found each other. They are so in sync.
Saw them in Santa Fe, best show ever
Pettibione rocks is right
Yes, amazing harmonizing going on in this song.
It’s so cool that he can switch back and forth between that nasty, gnarly fuzz tone and a relatively clean rhythm. At one point he flips on some wacky delay (?) just for a few notes - and it fits perfectly. I would love to see him play live.
@@mountainrogue so did I!!! I miss them together!
Without a doubt one of the greatest singer/song writers of our time.
my favorite backing band of hers, (close second is breen, vaughan, hombre and jackson)... but Taras, Pettibone and the fab Jim E Christie on drums. Awesome!!
Was getting ready to say same thing. That bass player is tops.
Mine too
I'd like to hear this band but with Bob Glaub on bass, that would be something!
Lucinda is the REAL DEAL and her band live kicks some serious ass! They are amazing and being there LIVE is one night you will always remember. Lucinda ...stay well and honor us back in Pgh. terrie
Her voice is so powerful! The band build a powerful wall of sound that drives along so well!Great live version!
Love this song -love her music in general -she powerful and has an amazing sound
Damn that was hot. Great version of this song. Lucinda is amazing writing, performing.
Is this the best version? I think so.
The tonez coming from that Fuzz Factory are unbelievable.
I _hate_ it that they mangle "get fucked up." It's part of the damn song.
Gary Louris of the jayhawks did the original backing vocals,on the album, which Lucinda then recorded two octaves higher in the final mix. It's pretty amazing the guy singing backup here can pretty much match that incredible performance from Louris.
baby sweet baby whisper my name
shoot your love into my vein

What can I say? One of the best all-time female rock tracks and the lyrics are simply the best! Great voice, she's got it all!!
Baby, sweet baby, you're my drug
Come on and let me taste your stuff
Baby, sweet baby, bring me your gift
What surprise you gonna hit me with
I am waiting here for more
I am waiting by your door

Is that Doug Pettibone on lead guitar and backing vocals? Good stuff.
The first 59 times I listened to this it didn't click that Doug was the backup vocals. Amazing.
kudos to doug pettibone for hittin those harmonies.... perfect and amazing
Don't know what planet I've been on, but have only RECENTLY been introduced to this amazing lady......WOW!!! CAN'T WAIT to see her in concert!!
Willie Nelson introduced her once as one of the best American songwriters !
Probably the most inspired I've ever seen her perform... great singer/songwriter!
No need for Viagra if you play this song.
:))))
Extraordinary song, and a off-the-charts hot performance.
God, I love her...what a viseral song.
Saw Lucinda at Shepherds Bush on this tour, love the guitarist. This is my fave number of hers.
Love her guitarist
Any WHY is Taylor Swift on the radio?
Lucinda is the Queen of Outlaw Country music. Bad-Ass!
Who's the guy singing high harmony? Secret weapon every time
Doug Pettibone, the guitarist.
Yes, that guy is great. I love the harmonizing.
brilliant
Just uploaded a terrible version of this. Im glad the pettibone version hasnt been taken down. Love this song except when i watch me doing it........
IN-FRIGGIN-CREDIBLE!!!! Nobody can add to a Lu song like Pettibone! I was a little bummed that he was not with Buick 6 when I saw them last weekend. But Lu quickly soothed me of my disappointment.
beautiful love song! you’re lyrics are so real!!❤
listen to her music wants to fall in love with someone
I use to love meeting her when she came to town, always real nice and signed
my cd's . Then she met her husband and all that changed. . Not blaming her.
Saw Her Livex3 Never Disappoints -She Rocks!
WOW!!!! Love ya Lucinda!!!
Did they bleep that F-word. Well, fuck that. Booming 101 didn't flinch.
Good luck, freedom. Thanks, Lucinda. Love you.
Censored the best line of the song. A fail for censorship on an otherwise great song & video.
Baby Sweet Baby, Your my Drug.
This is excellent, authentic, the real deal.
Hate the censoring of her lyrics
The waiting is the hardest part...
Jimi, is that a photo of James Cagney? It looks like the poster of him that I used to have but I'm looking at it on my phone and my eyesight ain't what it used to be. My favourite actor of all time and I love Lucinda and her music very much too.
@@albaby6954 Yep,that's Cagney....my favorite actor too....
I get chills every time with the chorus!!
oh baby
It's her voice man! Doesn't hurt that she is a songwriter! Love getting drunk and letting her take me away!
Body language between Lucinda & (brilliant) lead guitarist/vocalist
Or is it just me?
Nope its there
@freerangericky that would be Sir Doug ( Dougie) Pettibone.
Brilliant Neil Young-y backing guitar. Such a classic tune. Underappreciated.
fantastic song...FANTASTIC...and great eyes, too! i've loved her for many many years and she just gets better each time. west" is just the greatest album too...although essence is great too.
Great song. Dude nailed those back vocals too.
Lucinda and Doug =KICKASS
Yeah. I noticed that. It was a bit strange but the harmony is great and he nails the notes in his head voice. That's cool by me.
love this song!!!!
Question: Does anyone know where the video of Righteously is from this performance?
Incomparably disconcerting sexuallity from one of the greatest female performers ever.
Goes without saying I love Lu and love Doug's guitar, but I can't help but focus on the bass, too. Love the bass lines being put down.
Brilliant lyrics.... I think this might be my fav: kiss me hard make me wonder who's in charge.... been there....felt that
Give props to Bo Ramsey...slide guitarist and producer extrodianaire for his work on this and Car Wheels...
@follepourchevaux exactly my feelings when i first heard this late at night on Q107, toronto. mesmerizing, can't tell anyone about this, too dangerous!
Her guitar players name is Doug Pettibone...
What a fucking band behind her.
Sorry about the language, but it's warranted in my mind.
Good recording of a great performance. I have seen her in concert several times and she is always great.
One of my favorites of her songs too!
Pettibone is absolutely brilliant.
Essence of a mans soul , Lucinda knows what a woman wants...
A very sexually suggestive song. It's almost raunchy. I kinda doubt she was asked to play this song on Good Morning America or even the talk shows. If Lucinda had trouble with tv people worrying about "Right On Time" then I think those same people would be helping Lucinda out of the door if she wanted to play this song. jaxflfreebird and jax is a bit suggestive as well lol
Where and when?
And Doug - Doug Pettibone - YOU ROCK!!!!!!

so powerful voice so true to her words that she sings with heart and soul
Doug was her best guitar player. Her ONLY good guitar player.
Kenny Vaughan was pretty dam good too
Amazing
6minutes ? Half of it enough for that song...
what happened Lucinda, I was just watching video a few years down the road, not the same person sorry to say, I maybe dontwant to know
Mother Nature and Father Time are undefeated to date...
I've also been very troubled by her decline in voice and appearance recently........I'm thinking maybe substance abuse. Very sad, she is so great. At least I got to hear her live a few years ago. I still love Car Wheels and the other CDs of hers I have.
Go away...leave us to enjoy it all.
I love you Lucinda. Your voice enthralls me. I am at your mercy.
One my favourite Lucinda songs.....for you know who
oh man i saw her play last night at the WaMu at MSG in NYC.. she played this one boy was she on!!!! what a great show. i met the whole band except the drummer after the show on the street at 1 A.M. Before that I asked Lucinda to give me a hug and she started to come over but then her up tight security guards directed her towards the limo so she apologized and blew me a kiss
Hvis ikke jeg tidligere var fan (og det var jeg), så er jeg efter at ha’ hørt dette skønne nummer og hvilken guitarist i bandet perfekt.
Too bad she consored the best line in the song, "please come find me and help me get f*cked up."
Fucking Raw shit! I love lucinda...
This live performance just killed...a great room that the band just owned that night...
Freakin' Awesome!!!! ❤
Oh, Lucinda...
