- The US' massive prison population is getting older.
Long sentences that were handed out decades ago are catching up with the American justice system.
Prisons across the country are dedicating entire units just to house the elderly.
During difficult economic times, the issue has hit a crisis point. Estimates are that locking up an older inmate costs three times as much as a younger one.
How are prisons dealing with this issue? Who are the prisoners that are turning gray behind bars?
Josh Rushing gains exclusive and unprecedented access to jails and prisons across the country to tell the story.

There are plenty of senior men and women in Homeless Shelters with the same problems as these prisoners and they receive less services than these prisoners and they have committed no crimes...

Not to mention the cost. Selling the family home for their care. Having to divorce your husband to keep the home and get centerlink pension for his care because you both still have teenage children and need a home. Then to find the care staff and facility abuse your loved one. Physically mentally. And you can't take him home because of his condition. Yep work hard pay taxes. In a career for the community.

I didn't say he said that. I simply made a contrast/compareison. I'm still waiting for a confirmation. The point I"M making is that it's bullshit. Whoever said "LOck them up and throw away the key." didn't have aging or illness in mind... And when you're SUFFERING with PAIN they can't help you with, it constitutes a violation of the 8th amendment. Which prisons are not allowed to violate. So in order to keep from violating the law, which APPLIES TO PRISONS AS WELL AS THE REST OF US, they should be releasing them.
But it's okay, agree or not. You are entitled to your opinion. But the anti-criminal mentality in this country has been lord and king over all for quite long enough , and those days are OVERRRRR..... We're working on it - we have the power of the internet, and with people like me on the job, and enough determination (we are a determined lot, us prison moms) - we have the power to chip away until the prison system in this country has NO RESEMBLANCE to what it is now.
In the year I've been around, I've written 4 major complaint letters about poor prison conditions for specific prisoners and each letter got a positive action because of it....

luv2laf 22 Depends on the nursing home honestly. I volunteer at one and the only problem I ever see is the feeding. CNAs have a hard time getting all those residents filled up with food.

I live in OK. And if my parole was up to Mary Fallon actually doing something. I'd just accept I'm not going anywhere till her term is over.
Realistically, to release the prisoners in this documentary would be worse than keeping them locked up until the day they die. They've been incarcerated for so long, there's nobody left on the outside as far as family. They couldn't begin to function, since society has changed drastically since they came to prison. I can understand not wanting to die in prison, yet the alternative isn't any more attractive. As far as an expense view - they'd be on public assistance and probably hospitalized if they were out, so nothing would really change for them.
Instead of spending your time calling other people names, how about trying to get the gist of the comment. And frankly, where are they going to go "into retirement?" I'm thinking about their well-being. How are they going to pay for care? There are many things to consider.
Or worst .. they will commit a crime to go back.
Why did you assume that the younger generations of their family would be gone? Certainly some of the inmates might have some relatives able to care for them.
The man with dementia broke my heart.... his life, all wasted, there.. Behind bars.. And now he barely can remember the life he lived outside..

It's a tough one this, but for me, In the instances of the murderers, at least they got a chance to grow old.

Prisoners getting old doesn't melt my heart. It's what happens to people.
Despite how feeble they are you have to think of the victims and their families.
Based on that logic, why not just shoot and kill them immediately rather than spend 100,000 per year to keep them alive? At this point the pain of the families does not outweigh the cost of keeping these people alive. Don't get me wrong, I think these older prisoners should be released especially the ones that are so sick that they can't even harm themselves.

People make mistakes. To call these people the "scum of the earth" is easy for you, because you've never been there. You won't even try to put yourselves in their place.
It's dark, humiliating, and unbecoming, especially after becoming a senior.
I've never been in prison, but I did 23 months in a County work release program for multiple OWI's. It sucked, and I learned my lesson. I was allowed to keep my job, remain to serve in the National Guard, and to drive. It was the worst time in my life. To think that some of these guys are stuck in a hell hole for decades just blows my mind. It doesn't take that long to rehabilitate someone of a crime, no matter how heinous. There is a fine line between punishment & rehabilitation. It seem that the prison system has lost their vision between the two.

Except for revenge, there is no reason to keep old and sick people in prison, no matter how guilty they may have been, especially when their condition would make it impossible for them to commit a crime again. Unless of course, they have nowhere else to go...

Liberals have made it almost impossible to carry out death sentences with their constant appeals upon appeals. Media stories never stop about the inhumanity of the death sentence and even the Pope has given his unsolicited advice. That's the whole purpose of jail and prison , for it to be a horrible experience . So you'll never commit a crime again to go back to jail. While i do think jail should have horrible treatment , inmates who will re-enter back into society should be rehabilitated .

WE NEED TO LOOK AT THE WHOLE PICTURE AND NOT JUST PART.. NEED TO SEE HOW THE ELDERS ARE BEING TREATED .
Here's my imagined hypothetical situation. Being 85 and in prison for life, nothing really matters anymore. Whether or not ever released after 3/4 of a century old (75+) you will have already lived your life. If I were in that situation, I probably wouldn't care anymore. And if still alive upon release at that point in life, you'd probably just end up in intensive care or hospice where you'd never get out anyway.
True, but I haven't gone through the pain the victims endured and will continue to endure. Since I don't know what that's like firsthand, I must side with the victims family. Prison should always strive to improve conditions for elderly and infirm.

The problem with some of the sentencing is that some of the sentences are way too harsh in a way that when people get out of prison they have no chance or very little chance to get back to normal society so they might just need to sometimes re-offend because the only way might be thru some criminal stuff

the sad part is they probably get better care in prison than is available on the outside..... prisons are compelled by law to provide a certain level of care for inmates ...a lot of honest hard working folks spend their last days in a lot worse.....but the government should be able to find a more economical way to house elderly inmates.....the cell space is needed for younger more dangerous thugs...i doubt they need the security of a place like folsom or san quentin
there should be a hospital attached to the prison where they get looked after when they are old and no longer fight
is there air condition in that part of the prison I know a lot of Southern prisons do not have air-conditioning except in the hospital wing and some don't even have it there

I agree that there must be some punishment, but also prison should be a way to rehabilitate people, and try to make the do something good with their life, even in inside a prison. To be honest i f i'd be old and poor with no family, unable to work and unable to walk on my own. Prison would be just the place one would want to be. You got guards taking care of you, medication, and friends.

The feeling that you get from watching these videos is sympathy for the offenders, and you start agreeing with them, but then you remember that most of these people have killed, maybe more than once, or have done other atrocities and then you stop feeling sorry for them.

Some prisons allow for prisoners to take out loans to get those degrees. Also, most prisons don't even have college courses available to inmates anymore, because the government stopped funding it..... years ago.
The degree is more than likely from a For-Profit college anyways, which most employers don't take serious to begin with. On top of that, he's a felon that's been incarcerated for 31 years, so he has no experience, he wouldn't get a job in his field anyways.

Nobody should have student loans. Higher education should be free to all, even corrections inmates. A better-educated population makes a healthier nation, which is less likely to re-offend or require social welfare programs. It is high time we make some significant reforms in our criminal justice, including compassionate release, real rehabilitation, and officer training focused on human dignity and respect.

A critical analysis of this situation requires the incorporation of the impact of the crimes perpetrated on VICTIMS by these elderly criminals. A solution follows:Why NOT offer euthanasia to the prisoners, of any age, that do not want to continue serving their sentences?? That is cheap, and saves the public money. Why waste taxpayer funds on people who have probably NEVER contributed positively to society.
But in some cases they are. Why should someone who's committed a non violent crime or a crime to save their own life be kept in jail for their whole life?
Well, I wish them all well, but they're probably better off where they are. Out there on the streets is less appealing.

If they have family who is willing to take care of them, yes different story but I am sure a large majority of them will end up in a nursing home same as what is going on in the prison. I say if they have someone to care for them then ok let them be taken care by family. But if not they should stay where they are at and let the other inmates get training and learn compassion taking care of the old, sick and dying.

Life means LIFE. They took lives, therefore, they have to suffer the consequences for which they were sentenced. I don't think they should be mistreated, but should be cared for. They should not be allowed out just for being old. The people they murdered didn't get the chance to grow old, and their children missed out on a lot. That's the trouble with today's society-too lenient. There should be consequences for bad behavior.

People, this is what these criminals don't think about when they commit these crimes. They don't stop and think hmmm I don't want to be in jail when I'm 90, so maybe I shouldn't rape and murder these people. You do the crime...you do the time. Also they say "to have cancer and be in prison and not have your family is really scary." Well I'm sure it was very scary to those people you murdered to die without their families. In reality, there is little difference between the aged in the prison infirmary and those in a convalescent home on the outside. Maybe on the outside someone in the family will visit from time to time or maybe all the time, but you're still stuck in an institution, just one without bars. You're still stuck in the deterioration of aging and invisible.
nahnni Years ago, I was in a nursing home making a delivery when this one lady grabbed me and hugged me, crying, telling me that her daughter had dropped her off at a nursing home, and never returned again to see her.
Needless to say I was not happy, and I was able to find the phone number and called her and said I hope the same thing happens to you at the hands of your daughter.
Tragically, the elderly are abandoned all the time. It's just something that is not talked about openly in the news. People abuse the vulnerable...the aged, the children, the inbetween. I have no answer as to how to stop it. I wish I did know.

I have compassion for elderly men and women who are sick,but not the ones in prison for murder and other felonies! its understandable to feel compassion for someone whos terminally ill,but you need to remember that these are scum who had no qualms about murdering someone,raping women,molesting children,or committing other serious crimes against humanity.if they die a slow painfull death I say good,what goes around comes around!

We have a quarter million person nursing shortage in this country every year. Every year we release 200thousand prisoners back into life.
Wouldn't it be miraculous if we could train those prisoners to be nurses upon leaving prison?
What if we could train them to be simply personal care assistants to the millions of retiring people who will someday be old and frail? We have a massive shortage of those too.
Nope. That would make too much sense to the prison industrial complex. They don't want to release these people with skills - they want all these people stupid & still committing crime to come back in their prison, the sooner the better!!! So they are not obligated at all to actually educate them in anyway.
Instead of educating them, instead of rehabilitating them, they pocket that money so the gods can have an employee picnic every August. This is your tax payer dollars at work! Bend over.
I believe in life sentences. Especially for murder. But, when a prisoner gets to a point of elderly (not just old) or infirm, couldn't we, at the very least, throw a little paint on the walls to make it a little less dreary? I'm sure the staff would appreciate it.

100 years old & has been in prison since he was 82; also suffering from dementia...what in the world!! Another prisoner given medical release but has no one to pick him up, so so sad.
I myself have served a number of years in establishments of one kind or another. and the guy at the end is rite you miss it in a twisted way. the feeling of going home on your release day is hard to describe. but by returning to help other inmates it must be a stranger feeling. knowing that at the end of the day you will be released every time you return. it must of taken a long time for him to get used to being a visitor and not an inmate.
This prison can really save money if they removed the uniforms and fence. I mean who needs them? they're just old or disabled people. It'll be impossible to escape.
Canada is right in the middle of Europe and USA in terms of prison sentencing, not way to lenient like Europe and not overly harsh like the USA.
You can't feel sorry for these old prisoners. At the end of the day, these inmates have committed serious crimes if you're growing old and dying in prison.

I feel bad that these men made such horrible decisions that led to die in prison. their punishment was a long life. God bless these men, I hope they find salvation in Christ
