HBO and all the decision makers who don't listen to Martin set themselves up for failure by starting out with and continuing the format for the seasons of each of these shows. Regardless of the ten episode season that began not too long ago it is not a justifiable fit for a story as epic and expansive as ASOIAF/GOT. Why Martin ever agreed to this is a mystery to me since he too, I believe champions a longer storytelling format. Or at least for the original Game of Thrones he saw it as being able to go on for 12 or 13 seasons, thus being better able to incorporate the extensive number of epic characters in the story. Had they opted for the 20+ episode format of old Season 2 of HOTD would still be going strong and the ham fisted cluster FK of an 8 episode season finale would've been avoided and we would've had the epic battles they feel they had to cut out or shuffle around for the opening of next season. By not taking the longer format they force themselves to cut out more and more elements as the story goes on thus effecting the quality of storytelling at their disposal. It's foolish, simply foolish and it's sad that they don't even seem to care. But they continually make poor excuses for their mistakes.

I don't believe decency will EVER work for HOD, it's either brilliant or complete utter dog shit which season 2 was.
