You need to understand the basis of the original movie. It wasn't let's grab a random bunch of MK characters and make a movie about them. In the first game Mortal Kombat hadn't quite started yet. It was more like Keno from TMNT going to The Foot to find Shreddar. Shung told Sub-Zero: "We'll eliminate the apposition, THERE WILL BE NO TOURNAMENT." This was their attempt to cheat past the tourney and gain victory. Cole was the "Create your own Character" how ever the movie stuck closer to the original game than the New Line Money Grab. Not to say it wasn't good for its time and we received a tourney instantly. But Scorpion and Subzero are BUDDIES????? C"MON MAN! And the ending was lame but threw in a stage fatality. The next one was pure trash. Lui Kang whining when fighting Robot Smoke. To my point: This series follows the game to a T and its enjoyable that Scorpion has a lineage tied to Cole. The fact WB is as series as us fans are about the next installment of a much loved video game, they added Ed Boon to the mix. I'm hoping to see Kitaro in 3 (if there is one).

I'm really excited to hear that Quan Chi is going to be in the film because Quan Chi has the ability resurrect fallen warriors. For instance, Quan Chi created Noob Saibot from Bi Han and Hanzo Hasashi as Scorpion. So with Goro, Shang Tsuang and Quan Chi can do a deadly alliance team up and bring back Goro. Someone in the comments mention that Cole could be setup to play Takeda which would be cool but if that's the case than that would mean that Kenshi is also related to Scorpion, being that Takeda is Kenshi's son.

If Cole Yang was good, he'd be a guest character in MK 1 by now

I don't understand the criticism behind Cole Young. I think he's pretty cool. Just give him a back story. Liu Kang's back story was great. Also, wtf is wrong with Liu Kang? He wasn't this small. He looks like a kid now. He's a joke.

They should have cast Ryan Reynolds as Cage, although Urban will be awesome, Reynolds just looks more like the age of Cage in the games and can do cocky really well as seen in Deadpool and other films he has done.

MK 2 will probably see Shang as the final boss in the tournament. VS Liu , MK 3 will be based on Khan invading Earth, and MK 4 will definitely be Shinock and Quan Chi the final bosses. So if they do this properly, we can have plenty MK ahead up into 2030 and beyond with the DK Onaga etc, there's plenty to explore and make it successful.

The story does not deal with the before the tournament because too many people died. And where is the story the honorable kung Lao And goro who is the mortal Kimbat champion doing grunt work and getting defeated and his hand cut off .? 🙄. . . This movie suck ass .! & the special effects was garbage . The action was mid. . Mortal Kombat movie (95) Is way better than this

No Quan Chi will be the main villain, Shinnok will be the main villian in the 3rd film. You probably find Shinnok is the brains behind the war between Earthrealm and Outworld.

Cole was a little bitch and had quite literally magical “plot armor” that no other character had. His only weakness was sub-zero’s cryomancy, and had he faced sub-zero alone in the final fight he’d have have been absolutely eviscerated. IMO the best ending for mk 2021 would have been Cole being killed by sub zero, but as he falls to the ground, blood spilling from his chest, it seeps over the blade of hanzo, summoning his samurai ancestor to avenge his death and saving his family. This would have gotten Cole out of the way for the sequels, while still adding something new to part one, before getting into the real “meat” of the story which I suppose will be the sequel/the actual tournament as depicted in MK1995 It also would have mirrored the beginning, in which hanzo is the one to die, putting up a fight to the bitter end, and that Cole’s ultimate sacrifice would be to pass on whatever powers/arcana/lifeforce he had acquired/still retained in His last moments of life into the avatar of hanzo, as opposed to those powers fading away with his death, which would have infused hanzo with new strength/more formidable powers as we see him use in the final fight, with the ending being more or less the same, but a solo 1v1 battle with sub-zero being scorched to ash & then disappearing in a cloud of black smoke as he did in the film (leading to the sequel then introducing the concept of noob saibot, as well as by extension Quan Chi & his sorcerous abilities to forcefully resurrect and at least somewhat control/confuse/“puppet” the dead, like hanzo himself (in the very final scene of Hanzo disappearing, you can hear a faint whisper from the nether realm calling his name “Hasahi, Hanzo”, Strongly implying that though he clearly has his memories from his own lifetime & has some free-will, the necromancer still holds a subtle & deceptive sway over him/is able to summon him from one realm to another with a whisper (though it’s not clear if Hanzo has been deceived into allying with Quan chi with the promise of resurrecting his family or some-such, or if he is more in thrall/bound by the same magic that allows him to teleport between realms/exist as some sort of wraith/otherworldly spirit.)

I was not a fan of Cole young there’s just too many characters in this franchise that could make for a great protagonist so introducing a non existent character was a very bad decision. The movie was ultimately good though I thought sub zero was way more intimidating than any other time personally
