First "port of call" when I get to put my feet up after yet another nightshift is Joe's latest . I sometimes wonder if his father taught him a lot , or if he lucked out when he did his 'apprenticeship' . Cheers from Christiano in Straya.

But, in the case I need to rebuild it. The knowledge I've learned from following this channel. Has given me the confidence to do so. Thank you 2Vintage
Nice find! I always wanted a YZ-WR for a trail bike. If you didn't already know the "wide ratio" on the side is referring to the gearbox. This bike was marketed to enduro riders and had taller gears and a heavier flywheel to facilitate a smoother onset of power and added inertia to keep it from stalling while climing hills and starting from a dead stop. It was basically an answer to the KDX from Kawa. Yamaha did have a 2 stroke trail bike prior to this that was called the "IT". Talking about it makes me want one again!
To whoever says he’s over paying for bikes you’re making him money by watching and commenting on his vid Joe is the man and he loaded look at his house man this is what peak wealth looks like
This was a mystery right from the beginning had to actually tear it apart before you could find that bearing that caused the issues , I enjoyed it. Following from my easy-chair as usual.
All the bikes I've rebuilt in my time I've never seen the main crank bearing fail like that. Even in bikes that were completely blown up the main bearings have always survived. Totally shocked. Great video Joe. Metal chunks spewing up from the bottom had me like 🤔 in the beginning.
I thought the same thing. I was calling it bit a ring. Or even wrist pin bearing but for it to be that bad on the crank bearing and still kick-able is 🤯… little elbow grease and she’ll be ripping again. As it should
When you first kick it, i heard the noise of a broken bearing, so i was sure that it would be either the connecting rod or main crankshaft bearing. After 40 years of repairing that kind of stuff, your ears are well trained!!! The reason for that bearing to break, well age certainly, on the racing Aprillia bikes we ran the main bearings were rated for 1000km at 14500 rpm. So if the owner of that bike didn't use high grade oil, or not well mixed premix, or forget to put oil in gas sometimes, that kind of thing would happen. Those dirt bikes need a serious attention, no made for a casual user without any mechanical knowledge.
@@robwatkins1547 true.. but is the fancy spark plug tester more important than a bore scope? A random new spark plug to test with does the same thing...
@@C-C-777 I totally agree about the spark plug tester being a waste of time and yes a bore scope is a very handy piece of kit and is needed in some circumstances but, When a motor shows that much metal in the intake and exhaust ports you don't need a bore scope to tell you the motor has to be removed and split.
Check that rod again… in the video it looked possibly discolored. The rod to crank bearing may have overheated. It didn’t sound good when you spun the rod around the crank even though you said it felt ok You always do a great job, just my 2 cents 😊

Joe, I seen that the bike has a lighting coil / single yellow wire. Check out the vin # again. I believe you have a 1990 WR250 . That has a wide ratio transmission and a lighting coil. WR's are sought after. Worth a rebuild kit. That is a clean 35 year old bike. I have had many wr /yz's . Ball hone that cylinder. If above the exhaust port has zero scratches, should just get a pro-X "D" sized piston. Yes a D is over sized only by 0.04 th. In. Size the rings . Should have another 30 years on the old girl... And get a TM- carburetor for her , she deserves it. E-bay carburetor sucks ....
Then i said in my head like i was talking to you. I said if them crank bearing got rust on a couple balls that would destroy them over time. But i didn't comment it. Great job on the diagnosis!!
If that cylinder has a steel sleeve in it, bore it next oversize, cheaper to do! Fresh set of main bearings & crank seals will get the bottom end back together, & fresh piston & rings with fresh bore will make it a ripper! Great video, Joe!

Brought back many memories. Thank you, and nice job. I've done similar tear downs myself. A few of the older, as in 50s and 60s German small bikes, sold by Sears, were built with roller transmission shaft bearings that had the inner race pressed on the shaft, or the inner race was the shaft itself, and the outer race pressed in the case. When you split the case, the rollers just fell out loose, both ends. They were much fun to put the cases back together. It took some really stiff grease to hold the rollers in place until all was back together. I was about 13 to 14 years old. It was a good, fun learning experience. I did learn to appreciate the larger Hondas that the cases split top and bottom and had regular bearings. They were a breeze.
The previous owner was hard on the Kickstart mechanism. I replace all Phillips Head Screws with Socket Heads also (Allen heads) from Side Covers to Float Bowl Screws ● Ace is the Place. About 10 minutes into the video. I'm thinking it's probably low on compression, and you have a piston/ring problem. I'm usually wrong. I'm just hoping it's not another bottom end issue like the rod bearing. (Although I wouldn't mind a part 2) I'm going to say I was not wrong. The rings were stuck. I would have never guessed the crank bearing and seals blew out. It's amazing how little damage occurred with all of that metal floating around the case, top end and clutch side of the motor. What I can't believe is that is a 35 yr old bike. It's held up well.

2V, it's a sad day when the original fail was a very rare failure of a main bearing! You'll have a great bike after the rebuild so there's that! All the best!
Nice job Joe. Thats a nice set of crank bearings you got on that one. Almost looks like someone had water in the fuel and it sat for a while causing that rust.
42:40 My friend has a 50cc, slapped on a 70cc bigbore kit, removed the revlimiter and reved it to twise the old limiter, his crankbarings blew up but rodbaring still going strong
That thing looks phenomenal for a 35 year old machine. It was definitely taken care of, and the failure does not appear to be maintenance related. The only thing that the owner could be faulted for was not catching the failure as it progressed.

1988 YZ 250 was my first brand new bike. To this day it's still the best bottom end power I ever experienced on a 250. That WR model had gearing that made it one of the best off road recreational bikes ever. Good for desert racing.

Joe, you never cease to amaze me with your mechanical wizardry! Great job. I think you made out alright on that Yammy.
I have one, the suspension and brakes are junk from the floor. Upgrade those and the bike is solid. Good find.
Congratulations on the 500k subscribers 🎉🎉🎉
2V, it's a sad day when the original fail was a very rare failure of a main bearing! You'll have a great bike after the rebuild so there's that! All the best!
500k subs Joe, hats off!
Nice job Joe. Thats a nice set of crank bearings you got on that one. Almost looks like someone had water in the fuel and it sat for a while causing that rust.
Superb production...as always, young man . 👍
I like this channel ye know why no stupid music no adds no pushing merchandise, as long as you keep yourself as you are I will keep watching.
Thanks for the video can’t wait to see this go back together
Love your videos brother! Congrats on 500k. You deserve it.
You didn't get burnt to hard Joe. It could have been worse. Good luck with the build.
42:40 My friend has a 50cc, slapped on a 70cc bigbore kit, removed the revlimiter and reved it to twise the old limiter, his crankbarings blew up but rodbaring still going strong
Can't believe you're at 500k already. Keep er going, boss 🎉
That thing looks phenomenal for a 35 year old machine. It was definitely taken care of, and the failure does not appear to be maintenance related. The only thing that the owner could be faulted for was not catching the failure as it progressed.
HALFWAY THERE!!!!.. so cool, Joe.. Has Jade said anything about it?.. I'm sure she is very proud of all your hard work.. Congrats again!! Can't wait to see what you guys do with your dream 50 acres.. so excited for you guys!!.. CHEERS!!!
I don't think $900 was too much. When you get it back together you'll be surprised on how awesome those older 250s are and some are able to bring pretty good money.
Congrats Joe on hitting 500,000 , cant wait to see the YZ run :)
congrats on 500k i rember watching you when i was 11 now im 15 about to save up enough to go buy myself a kx100 for my 2nd bike
1988 YZ 250 was my first brand new bike. To this day it's still the best bottom end power I ever experienced on a 250. That WR model had gearing that made it one of the best off road recreational bikes ever. Good for desert racing.
Awesome bike.. here in the uk with a rebuild engine.. 3 3500£ wanted sn 89 since watching "winners take all'. Child hood dreams a.
Watched a few of his vids.addicted!just subbed!!keep up this wrenching man!
You're going to love that bike once it's done.. Good catch Joe.
