Had an 04 625 SMC, with Full Akra exhaust, Rallye cam, rejet carb, lithium battery, radial m/c, under 300 lbs wet, till sold @ 14 k miles. Beat many 1000cc sportbikes on the dragon. There was a recall on a cam follower bearing that KTM didn't tell anyone about, incl myself until it failed and had to replace bearings, cam, valves and head. Make it a priority to research the recalled bearing and replace those bearings. Also, try to store older carbureted bikes vertical, not on side stand as this will wear an oval shape in the carb where float needle goes-that's what causes them to stick and either not get gas or piss it out the overflow tube. If that has already occurred, you can take a dremel and the white soft polishing attachment, cut w/ dykes to just fit into hole and use polishing compound till it is bright- this will make it round again, so float needle doesn't stick.
My friend had a older YZ80 he got dirt cheap for his kid, the previous owner went crazy tearing it all apart, cleaning everything, ordering new parts and finally gave up. He sold it to my friend for $350 as he had had enough.. He had it a week and it would only start and run for about 8 to 10 minutes and then die out. if you let it sit for an hour or so it would start up and do the same thing.. He called me up to come over and look at it.. Same thing I rode it for 10 minutes and it just died.. I pulled off the gas cap and kicked it like 11 times and it started right up, I then pulled off the gas CAP HOSE and it was blocked solid, you could not even blow through it.. We left the hose off and drive it back to his house,, It took us 20 minutes to clean out the gas vent hose as it was blocked with a piece of stick and lots of dirt.. Once cleaned out the bike ran great!!! My friend called the guy he bought it off of and he asked his son if he knew anything about sticking a stick on the hose on the mini bike and he said yes he was bored one day and stuffed it full of sticks and mud... Needless to say the old man was not happy as he spend countless hours and money into a bike then sold it dirt cheap only to have t be a $2 piece of hose.

Some people are honest and just don’t wanna deal with stuff when it quits running. I’ve bought and fixed many machines for under $1,000 that didn’t run and all it needed was a carb cleaning or something else very simple.
It's funny, but when Joe first took off the filler cap I thought, just do a test start with the cap off ad see that there is absolutely no fuel starvation from the tank holding onto the fuel... And, err... that was probably the issue main all the time even before the carb clean. Very nice bike.
I had a 640 supermoto in 1999 , in England, & that was a factory made model. One my favourite bikes that i've had . So much fun around the twisty back roads. Even went to the 2000 Isle of Man TT on it. The only thing that went wrong on it was the side stand cut off switch.

Looks like a fun bike! It reminds me of the European movies where the bad guys are chasing the good guys on these types of bikes. They go down grassy embankments, sidewalks, stairs, you name it and seemingly can go anywhere with ease, and are quite fast and capable. Glad you finally got an easy fix, Joe!

Just a FYI, pay close attention to how the filters go back in when changing your oil. I had the 2006 model and while changing the oil I didn’t pay enough attention to the filters as they will go in either way with nothing to stop you. It ended up costing about 700$ in 06’ and that was after a deep discount. Their sweet bikes! Too heavy for off road and the vibrations on road were overwhelming at higher speeds. But I didn’t have the supermoto edition. Cool channel, really enjoy your videos.

Having pressure build up runs opposite to the carb not getting fuel IYAM. The tank and carb fuel line and needle/seat should be able to handle 4-6 psi pressure build up and many caps often do that. It’s the negative venting that could be the issue. If the cap isn’t venting air in to replace used fuel, that will create a vacuum in the tank and that could cause the carb to not get fuel.
For that price with all those upgrades $1500 is a steal. It looks like a lot of stuff is not hooked up for that display though. that might have been some of those plug by the engine. There are a lot of upgrades. That high beam does not look stock, the lighting, the conversion kit, the street tires. It looks like higher end rims and an upgraded chain. It might have engine upgrades and a tune. And a clean title. I would take the race fuel out and make sure it runs good on pump gas. You also need to fix the rear turn signal. I would also see if the seat could be fixed. Maybe a heat gun and stretch the vinyl a bit. Then clean and wax it. With some good pictures with the lights all on you should get $4000 or more if you are lucky. Definitely get all the functions on the display working like voltage and RPM.
Great job!! The lc4 engine is a beast! I encorage you to check the rocker arm rollers as they tend to fail over time and do a waterpump rebuild. With that checked, you will have a bulletproof engine. Greetings from Chile!
Just a suggestion, replace that oil drain bolt (it’s probably compromised now) and get a new crush washer and use a torque wrench to tighten. Pretty obvious the old owner didn’t and probably had a leak and just tightened it more and more using the old crush washer to get the leak stopped. If you have a torch you can sand the old copper washer smooth and heat them glowing red (re-anneal) and allow to cool and that will restore the copper to its previous state and ability to be crushed to seal again.
Great job. I have a 2006 version of this bike, also transformed to Supermoto spec. Very rare bike in the UK. It's an absolute beast. I love the KTM styling. Nobody does it like them.

Your joking, the fastest he went was up his driveway when he'd finished. I wish someone would show him how to use the gearbox correctly and use the gears to slow down instead of just clutching it but then again, anything over a 125 he doesn't open up.

Nice find, street tires have their place on street bikes, having said that I'm not super impressed with Dot knobbys and I've burned enough of those off, fortunately there are enough different styles that if you keep it you can find something that feels good on different surfaces
Awesome. This is my favorite bike of yours so far. I had a 525 KTM and always wondered what the 625 version was like! Btw I always had metal flakes on my drain plug after 10-15 hour oil changes and my bike had over 12k miles/ 400+ hours on it with the stock bottom end. I think the intake valves are the biggest weak point of the engine since mine started to get tight @400 hrs
Love your videos and I'm near the end of this one right now. You are repairing the gauge due to the bad crimp. Looking at it, (I'm an electronics teacher) all those crimp connections are done wrong. It looks like the wire is ~ 22AWG and the previous person used blue connectors. Blues are for 14 - 16 ish AWG and are too big for your needs. Replace those puppies with some red connectors. If you have it, I always recommend using a better quality ratcheting crimp tool vs. the cheap ones that come with the connector kits. The ratcheting ones will only release when you have a good secure crimp.
Too bad your cameraman just sits there and watches you struggle instead of helping you out... oh wait, your cameraman is a tripod. Love your videos! Thank you so much for your hard work.
Nice! I had a 2002 Duke- same LC4 motor. About 40 hp. It’s an incredible bike. I used to call it the Mercedes of bikes cuz every thing was tight and worked as it should. Lots of engine brake from the big single so it likes to be either accelerating or braking. Not much of a cruiser ;)

Been down the road having 2 bikes stolen. Got them back 6 months later and they were beat hard.
Vinny looks like my "Gary". I stumbled onto your videos and enjoy them very much. I don't know much about repairing motorcycles or ATV/SXS, but I learn from your troubleshooting skills. Kudos!
It's a keeper , if you put some street and trail tires on it , you can rip the trails and the pavement 😊
Yours are some of the best engine/running diagnosis videos on UA-cam. I really enjoy watching you do the process and do it right! Keep up the good work. Great bike selections, too!
😂
Great work joe! Always good practice to disconnect the battery before working on the computer/ electronic systems. I have seen them fry from accidental contact while diagnosing witing issues. Love the content man keep it coming!
Yea, i figuread that out after a couple dumb mistakes lol
I had a street legal 97 KTM 360 for a short time. What a blast that bike was. KTM makes quality machines indeed.
Yoo my buddy had one just couple years ago. We put my sumo wheels on it, what a beast❤
My Mate had a KTM and I had an SRX600 - He had it stripped down one day and I was surprised at how short and light the piston was - that thing was well fast and made mine look like a plodder
SRX 600 Yamaha?
@@bananabrooks3836 Yes a 1986 608 cc - it has been turned into a cafe racer with single seat/predator exhaust /jet kit/K&N etc
2 things tells me how well it's been looked after... the header pipe is as good as new and they aren't cheap, and the ktm on the seat is clear and as good as new. Great find and deal 👍
It wasn't the gas cap. It's those junk vent hoses with the ball valve. Had so many issues with those that now if I get a toy with one of those, I immediately throw it away. It's an issue with the steel ball getting stuck shut.
Man I just love the way you find problems and you get them fixed love your videos keep them coming
I raced KTMs in the 2ks, great bikes built all my race engines and won championships in endrro and HSs
Fuel issue, needle or restriction to the float bowel.
Vacuum cab???? Take that pos off and install a Keihin in it
Not this one pal. One of the worst KTM ever made.
2 minutes into the video and I'm thinking wow if this just needs what the seller thinks, you got this thing for a song and a dance!! What an awesome bike for that price, no matter what it needs.. if it starts, it runs.. awesome Joe, what a find!
Another great morning to be alive
That would be getting dual sport wheels back on
Joe that is one of the nicest looking bikes I’ve seen you purchase!
Brilliant video Joe watching from Edinburgh Scotland UK 🇬🇧 👍
Prefer this flag 🏴
Love how you can just leave your bikes outside unattended. Here in the UK if you turn your back for 2 minutes your bike is gone
Don’t put 110 in it that’s why plug is black it’s not burning it .
Yup...if your machine is designed for pump gas there is no benefit to anything else.
Anything over 87-89 is a waste of money and will burn up your rings because it burns too hot. Thats the scam the premix cans of gas that are insane expensive... they are 97 octane and burn up motors.
Yup big misconception about fuel . Higher the octane harder is to burn . You need very high compression. Still you see guys doing it .
@@memorris2 My KTM 300 pings on pump gas. I use 95 octane gas from the Husqvarna store. Non ethanol with stabilizer and synthetic oil included. No ping. No burned up engine.
@NightStalkers-hx3dq nice! I was just talking about the 97 octane cans that they suggest you use for husky weedeaters and chainsaws. Way to much for those small 2 strokes.
vinny is the cutest pup. i love how you always have time for him.
Bike is a monster, my guy! Nice find. Is it just me or is the rear tire bigger than the front?
Find and follow the bst bible setup online for that carb. You can also get aftermarket screws that allow fine adjustments without carb removal. Unbelievable difference in power! Much like adding the power up kit to a stock xr650 before they stopped making them. I have an 03 sxc in dirt bike form
Enjoy your program. I bet your neighbors were real happy when they "heard" what you do for a living.
Mine had a decomp lever, so I would hold that in, get the engine spinning over, and then drop the decomp. Much friendlier to starter and battery.
Dude build a ramp you can backup to. You are going to get seriously hurt the way you unload these from the back of your truck with those ramps!
I would love to take a second to appreciate the consistency the upload rate and all round amazingness of your videos. The amount of work you must put in is mind blowing 🤯 👏 👏
JOE IS SUCH A GREAT MECHANIC BUT HE IS ALSO A GREAT CAMERAMAN AND NARRATOR AND I'M ADDICTED TO HIS SHOW!
You have let me down, I was waiting to see you fix the rear blinkers 🤣
Oil plugs are torqued tight on those, can't remember for sure but I think around 40 or 50 ftlbs. Probably clutch material in there, it floats around, normal wear and all.
You deserve this one - hard work pays off.
That spark plug tester is a really good diagnostic tool for the arsenal I must say.
Joe is a monster mechanic.
That's a nice Kmart Trail Master, Joe
I live in Appleton, WI kinda near you, my buddy bought a dirt bike off you a while back and it has been running well since he got it from you, respect to you! ❤️
Issue I see is a 5 gear wheely @ 100 mph plus will make ya shorts dirty lol
I can tell you've owned one of these too 🤣
Your joking, the fastest he went was up his driveway when he'd finished. I wish someone would show him how to use the gearbox correctly and use the gears to slow down instead of just clutching it but then again, anything over a 125 he doesn't open up.
to be honest...i'm more intrigued by how you got a quad and the moto crosser in the pickup...it was a challenge to get them them off jammed together like that...i'd be fascinated to watch a video of that part we missed...still...we get what we get...it's all good...love your gift of fault finding...the diagnosis of a mechanic detective...surprised it took so long to find your channel...
A spark plug tester! Cool 🛠
Don’t ya love when you don’t find “the issue” but the issue is fixed when you take it apart clean and reassemble. Nice 👍
That spark plug test was so cool
Nice find, street tires have their place on street bikes, having said that I'm not super impressed with Dot knobbys and I've burned enough of those off, fortunately there are enough different styles that if you keep it you can find something that feels good on different surfaces
That should pull some 50-60mph wheelies!
Hold on tightly then.
Holy shit finally a ktm welcome to the dark side my friend once you start getting 2 stroke ktm your going to be rolling in money
Bought my first KTM last year XCW300. 50 plus hp 2 stroke is a blast
$1500? .....100% stolen lol.
They stole the title too 😂
Not necessarily😒 There are deals like that all over the Facebook market page!!
@@lifewithaclifewithac897yes but it’s really hard to find them
Wow.
Not really I see ktm all the time in idaho for $1500
Too bad your cameraman just sits there and watches you struggle instead of helping you out... oh wait, your cameraman is a tripod.

Hey man I just discovered your channel. I love the process of buying and troubleshooting bikes myself and so your videos are really satisfying to me. I believe that by fixing things that are broken we are putting good into the world 🤘😎 keep it up!
Love your in-depth videos bro. Also, you have an amazing home to admire as well. Keep up the great informative videos. Thanks, Mark
Glad Vinny is around!👍😄
Great deal there and I hate butt connectors not sure why people use them. Not hard to solder wires and a little shrink wrap.
This is such a slick looking bike! I'll bet it's a ton of fun! Congrats Joe, I hope that you're going to keep it for a while.
I think i'd flip it with all that metal in the crank case asap! Thanks for showin more of Wisconsin. I miss it sooo much
Also could you set it up to where it has 220 cranking compression please , thank you Joe , really love watching what you do . Steve from California
Use the second ramp for you to walk on.. just make sure it's lock to the car so it wont "fall" off.
Had a similar bike, 660 SMC. 1 of 2 imported into the US in 2003. Total monster!
It's common that it's usually a carb issue and the jets and fuel delivery like the floats or just the air/fuel ratio adjustment screws are off and diaphragms are dirty also! Good job and great find for the price!! 💯👌🏼👍🏻
