Love the way he throughly ruffles the wood chip to make it look as natural as possible and not freshly planted. You can see how much he respects the ground he’s planting in 😍

You just can't pull this off without perfect sunlight conditions. I tried just planting like this in my pure yard's soil and I had terrible results for 2 seasons. I had sunlight only from 2pm to 7pm throughout the summer and the soil was clay and rocky. Part shade plants cooked and part sun plants were leggy. Only until I tilled the soil and conditioned it did anything thrive. I did end up with Rozanne mostly, I picked it up from John's geranium vid.
Either that or John just has the magic touch. Haha

I’ve been dealing with lots of willow herb this year, it just seems to appear overnight & is often the size of the bigger one you showed before I spot it....not had that much of it in the past but 3 years ago we had quite a few trees removed, mostly conifers, the stumps are still left behind so your explanation of why that particular weed has thrived makes so much sense, I thought maybe I’d done something or not done something but now I know it’s the conditions and not me, at least it’s not hard to remove. Thanks for the info, another excellent video. 👍👍👍

Always helpful to be reminded of plants for dry conditions, especially as more and more of us are having to adjust to less rainfall. If your ants are anything like mine, you can't drive them off. I love that Teddy now gets a mention by name in the promo. 😊 I have searched the last couple of years for any sanguisorba at local nurseries and can't find it. Would love a pink one. Will look forward to seeing how yours does. Thank you, John!

Disturb the mulch (temporarily remove it) and disturb the ants without killing them and they will likely move the colony.

While it’s not silver, the variegated Tulbaghia would probably look nice there.
I concur with your ant - people comparison. Since you appreciate ants, you might like some of the writings of E.O. Wilson.

Snowball tree is not native to Ireland, nor any other country, since the flowers are sterile. It's a bred cultivar of guelder rose (viburnum opulus), which has a much simpler flower.

I'd have planted the Tulbaghia, as it lovely and delicious to eat. I would not have planted the kniphofia, as K. caulescens grows in standing water in the wild-many kniphofias tolerate drough, but love really wet soil.
