45 Minute Evening Yoga Series - Yin for Hips and Shoulders (Part 3 - 8 Apr '22) Day 6 Challenge

  • This is a 45 minute evening YIN yoga class. Part 3 of a new series of classes designed to help you wind down and step into your evening and sleep feeling nourished.
    Targeting the hips and shoulders, this yin class focuses on restoring range of motion and offers your body a deep, replenishing stretch. Each of the postures are held for 1.5-3 min.
    Explore reclined cow face arms, a reclined twist with shoulder rotations and side body lengtheners (bananasana) to open your upper body. Half saddle, sleeping swan and dragonfly for the hips. (I also offer some knee friendly alternatives)
    For practice, you may wish to have 2 x blankets and a bolster or something similar.

    Really nice! Not a fan of evening yoga, but usually do a long, mostly gentle practice first thing in the morning. Prefaced this with short yoga routine of full body stretches. The combination provided what I needed to start the day. Always appreciate your soothing voice.

      Oh lovely! Nice to indulge in some yin huh? We’re doing ok here. Sadly had to say goodbye to our beloved Great Dane, Stella. Ralphie all on his own now. Though he’s coping well. I think animals know when others are sick. Stella was 12. A very good age for a Dane. Missing her. 🙏

    Wow, this put me in a relaxed otherworldly state! I closed my eyes and was seeing beautiful artwork, same way I do when I meditate sometimes!
    I’m so happy I’ve been waiting for the next evening flow and this delivered!
    I love your channel, your guidance is so helpful and your voice and style is so soothing and at the same time (in more strenuous practices) the right amount of encouragement!

    Amazing - thank you very much indeed! This lesson was a first for me, never did yin before. Quite demanding, the concentration needed to find a good organisation of limbs, trunk, & open breath...Would you say all Asana are suitable for yin, on principle, then? HalfSaddle I found the most puzzling to hold well, lessen the effort needed to work against the bent knee rising. I'm curious to learn more about yin-Yoga, that was very close to Feldenkrais actually. ❤️🙏🏻

      So great to hear you gave it a go. I’m not an expert in yin yoga practices. It’s very demanding for my body I find. I would consider Paul grilley to be one of the leaders in this style of yoga. There are approx 18-26 yoga postures in yin. And as Paul says, the more yin your practice, the less postures required. Typically held for 3-5 min, their focus and intention different to a yang style practice as they concentrate on ligaments, joint capsules, cartilage, bones and fascial networks of the body. Not all postures are suitable for yin. The guiding principles of yin require you to be passive in the postures with a view to accessing the deeper connective tissues. When muscles are engaged, it circumvents this or there is less stress available for the parallel tissues. Therefore, not all postures are suitable for yin.. Its believed that a balance of yin and Yang practices benefit the muscles as you alternate between cyclical stress and dynamic movements. Yin is not my favourite:-) I prefer restorative practices. 🙏😊

(though the far-East yin/yang connected to a Indian practice of movement is not immediately comprehensible, I have to confess. But I'll see what I can find out here, very interesting!🙏🏻
