  • WI v. MCCANDLESS (2019) - The defendant's ex-boyfriend, Jason Mengal, takes the stand for the Defense. Ezra McCandless was on trial for the murder of one of her three lovers, 24-year-old Alex Woodworth.
Prosecutors claimed McCandless stabbed Woodworth sixteen times on March 22, 2018, to rid herself of the inner turmoil of having multiple affairs and an abortion. The defense argues McCandless acted in self-defense when Woodworth tried to rape her. She was found guilty of first-degree murder and is serving life in prison.

The way she just lit up and smiled when she saw him, is unnerving. She was absolutely obsessed with him. She’s sitting there as the accused of murder, and she still couldn’t control herself. She looked like a schoolgirl in love, not as the defendant in a murder trial.

Notice, at the very beginning of the video, she's truly excited to see Jason. And then, to ensure she gets a good look at him, she puts on her glasses (notices a smudge), puts them on and then beams with excitement. She's on trial for a horrific murder...and she's sitting there like a giddy schoolgirl about to be asked to the prom.

It's called letting the little head do the thinking. Crazy women can be a lot of fun in and out of the bedroom. But it rarely ends well with them. We will try to fool ourselves into believing we can change them or "make it work", but that's not realistic. Love, lust, and emotions are not logical, but very powerful. EDIT: People can, and do, change. But change cannot be forced on them.

He didn't do anything legally wrong, but the way he answers questions, the way he behaves, etc, is a perfect example of someone who gets taken advantage of. And I don't think this is some subjective thing, because he admits he couldn't pull away from her, he kept coming back despite all the nonsense and drama she caused him. Not being able to pull away like that is viewed as a weakness, which I believe is why people hate on him.

One can have empathy for another person and even want to support them, but that does not mean one has to sleep with them; in fact, I would argue that Jason was taking advantage of Ezra by sleeping with her (she has no sympathy from me) qhwn she had mental health issues. It seems like there are different rules, or different allowances, depending on who you are.

    • @be_here_now44

@shaunnal2560 As someone who served in the military and still spends a lot of time with my fellow veterans in veteran spaces and organizations, I can tell you that for better or worse, despite what people believe, these days the military and federal government are often on the leading edge of whatever social movements are happening, sometimes begrudgingly by some of the troops, but that's besides the point when leadership is making the directives. So it's not surprising that he was sensitive about pronouns when the government and military are making concessions for the transgender community. He was likely practicing the same decorum that he's expected to practice while on duty. Just another interesting example, I was recently in a program for women veterans, and there was a transgender woman housed in that program with me. Mind you, I was in that program for treatment of ptsd-mst (military sexual trauma), so it was more than a little unnerving to know there was, someone who served in the military as a man, now saying they're a woman, someone with a penis still, who's sleeping in the room next door to me, inside a locked corridor for women rather than outside that locked door in the men's wing or some other wing. But what could I say lest I be considered transphobic and potentially kicked out of this program?
So again, this guy on the stand was probably protecting himself by minding pronouns. Sure, he also coddles Ezra, but it just proves again that he has high empathy, and I still can't figure out how that's a terrible thing. As for his tendency to use literary and flowery language (waxes poetic), all the while saying, "Roger" for yes, that's not indicative of anything more than a military person with military habits, who also happens to be someone of literary and artistic leaning. It's not his problem that the people in the courtroom are not literary types and don't understand. It's a common misconception that all military members are the same type of people, with the same interests and hobbies, values, and beliefs. Like, are military members just sitting around talking guns, bombs, muscles, and war all day every day? I just fail to see the validity or merit of the term simp in general or in this specific instance.
That's my whole point about the monolith created by social media. For someone who isn't political, not let nor right you sure do seem to be batting for both based on your assumptions.

I can only comment to your post as I have others: the areas he is referencing are VERY Catholic. Pro-choice billboards all along the routes to get there. Ultra conservative. Church is THE thing there. The people are very "God, Country, Family." Extremely hard-working people who are humble, kind and friendly, but they are sheltered (and they are proud of that) as most rural areas are. These days that's not necessarily a bad thing. So if he grew up there, that might be a reason why he seems under developed for his age.

First obstacle, she was pregnant immediatedly. Wanted immediatedly an abortion. Was it his? Or previous relationships?
It went wrong the relationship. They stayed friends. It went wrong, especially learning or knowing rumors about a John and an Alex.

Like Ezra was his responsibility. She being 20 and Jason being 33. It is what is happening in real life also. Without somebody being killed. Don't mess with an unstable girl. I think, Jason did the best he could. In friendship. But maybe, maybe, it should have stayed, just by friendship. For a lot of girls, it is so big, a relationship for a few months. The world. And when it falls apart, such a deep low. Especially when your safe haven is gone, your roof, your love, your rock, etc. And you have to start over again, without all the attention Jason gave her.
