Honestly, this song was destined to find Anita. Ms Baker’s sophisticated singing approach and immense musicianship really helped establishing this song as her very own.
This is one of my favorite groups of all time. When i first heard this song in 1983 it made me cry. Their harmony is insane and vocals are filled with so much Soul. Them dancing wasn't all that great because their raw natural vocal ability and harmony was Angelic❤
Sorry; but I must correct you: "Mystery" was written, composed, and arranged exclusively by Temperton. Unfortunately, Temperton's rich harmonies in the Chorus were badly watered down and altered by Anita Baker's arrangers. @@Steel_the_Free

There is absolutely nothing better than singing with the passion with such an amazing resonance as all of you have done for so many years. Got me in tears and that's not easy. Well done and then some is all I can say. Thank you so kindly. I just stood up and took a bow to all of you for sharing that. 🤗😎👍🎶🎶

Wow I was today years old when I found out my favorite singer Anita Baker remade this song. I actually like this version too. Both versions are wonderful. ❤❤❤
This version is the songwriter, Temperton's, intent and conception: He not only wrote and composed "Mystery," but also was the instrumental and vocal arranger for this Manhattan Transfer version.
We have a "Strawberry Festival" here in Owego, New York. We get around 10,000 people here but that's not my point. We are good and simple people that enjoy a good time. If you wouldn't mind check it out and come here and have a good time. Then you all can see my tears of joy as I enjoy the most amazing music ever.
This song was also originally recorded by Michael Jackson for his Thriller album in 1982. Unfortunately the song was also never released. So he also gave the song to The Manhattan Transfer in 1983!
Research on the song, "Mystery", first recorded by the New York vocalese group, Manhattan Transfer in 1983, shows it was covered 3 years later by Anita Baker. There is no mention of any kind with respect to this work of Michael Jackson.
This was/is a brilliant album and should have been a much bigger hit. There were several tracks that deserved to be Top 40 hits. As it was, only Spice Of Life reached the Top 40 peaking at #40. Such a shame.
Love this version but lean a little bit more towards Anita Baker’s version! Rod Temperton is an amazing songwriter and producer!!! Aside from this cut, if you listen to “Spice Of Life” from this album and also written by Rod Temperton, you’ll notice it has the same structure and chords as Michael Jackson’s “Baby Be Mine” which is also written by Rod Temperton.
I read that Laurel Masse had left the group in 1979 after being injured in a car accident, so at the time of this album (1983) the other singer (alongside Janis Siegel) was Cheryl Bentyne.
Rod Temperton was a genius.

Manhattan Transfer was very underrated. Pop music fans are fickle. Talent for singing is rarely enough to be successful.

I believe Anita Baker did when she remade this song.

No way.
This version is more flavorfull.

I like Anita Baker's version better, it's more soulful. This is more bland and pop like, just my opinion.
