  • We ride the all-new 2022 Harley-Davidson Nightster! H-D has pulled the covers off its latest addition to the modern Sporster family, powered by the liquid-cooled Revolution Max 975T 60-degree V-twin engine.
The 2022 H-D Nightster might use a name from the past, but nothing about this bike is old. It utilizes an entirely modern stressed-member chassis and engineering techniques that improve handling, braking, and engine performance, elevating the Sportster to new heights. Still, the Nightster tips its hat to the Sportster faithful by including classic Sporster styling cues such as the iconic peanut fuel tank, standard fork, twin shocks, and traditional swingarm.
Powering the Nightster is the Rev Max 975T V-twin engine that gives Harley-Davidson fans more-more of everything. This modern mill makes a claimed 90 horsepower at 7500 rpm and 70 ft-lbs of torque at 5000, spooling up nicely and pulling hard all the way through the rev range. A soft bottom-end quickly gives way to loads of useable midrange power, capped off by a zesty top-end rush that the air-cooled Evo engines could only dream of achieving. There are three ride modes to choose from; Sport, Road, and Rain, as well as traction control and ABS, which reaffirm the Nightster's new-age technology.
The stressed-member chassis design is a huge benefit, too, as this new Nightster handles incredibly well, letting you use up all 32 degrees as you please. It tips in gently and tracks through the corners with precision. While the suspension does keep it old-school visually, the fork and shocks provide much more support and comfort than Sportsters of old, although a hard-edged hit in the rear will still be felt through the chassis.
Senior Editor Nic de Sena thrashed the canyons and streets near Santa Barbara, California, to share his thoughts on the 2022 Harley-Davidson Nightster. Have any questions about this new Sportster? Drop them down below!

Man, this is the 4th review so far that has complained about the sport mode being too snatchy, a few have said it’s “unusable.” Ouch! Most have said that road mode is the only mode they would use stating rain is so soft they would never use it. Moto bob saying rain might be useful for a complete beginner, which I suppose could be good for a “complete beginner “ if it didn’t cost as much as a softail standard? I mean, if you’re going to give it ride modes then make them worth having. Especially at this price. I’ve not heard anyone complain about the 4 rider modes on the Honda rebel 11oo. Which is thousands cheaper. I waited 2 years for this bike and had high hopes that Harley Davidson would outdo that rebel 11oo without going crazy on the price. Instead, they basically made the same bike, with less technology, same power numbers, costing thousands more, and are hoping no one would notice I guess?

The Sport mode could and will most likely be refined as this Nightster ages. Manufacturers listen to market feedback and often, we see that reflected in future iterations. I'd wager that it'll be worked out for 2023 models or even before then.
I'll save any detailed commentary about the Honda Rebel 1100 for a direct comparison story, but what I can say is that those two bikes offer quite different riding experiences, despite being similar on paper.
      Take care!

@@ultimatemotorcycling Too bad they didn’t get it right the first time. Especially for what they’re charging for this bike.
Also, you’re just assuming they will make the bike what it should have been the first time. There’s no guarantee of that. It’s really strange to me, they’re having this problem considering they’ve already done this in the Pan America and sportster S models with no such issues. However, those two bikes did get the same tech package and this one is a different setup. I would be fine with 0 ride modes if they came correct everywhere’s else, including price.

You didn't mention the lean angle drag torque slip control system

      Hey Dean,
Unfortunately, the Nightster isn't equipped with an IMU, which means that its rider aids (traction control and ABS) are not lean-angle sensitive.
The Drag-Torque Slip Control feature is just Harley-Davidson's version of a slipper clutch.
      Take care!

Stock exhausts usually curb that aspect. I'm reserving any comments until I hear one with a full system on it with a proper tune!

@@djjmplus3 The AMF years are long gone, H-D has been rated one of the most reliable motorcycles for decades, not by me, by consumer reports. In fact the top 6 spots for the last 7 years have been the Japanese 4, Harley and Indian, in various orders, and always within a few points of each other. So the reliability argument is a bit of a moot point.
Does the Rebel 1100 still have that floppy gas tank issue?
