  • I recently test rode and reviewed the new Harley-Davidson Sportster that they are just calling the Nightster in Santa Barbara, CA. This bike has the new Revolution Max 975T water-cooled engine. This is a real-world biker review and I tell you what you need to know about this motorcycle.

Very gratified to see HD joining the 21st century. Harley can't survive otherwise, and it can't hurt them to adopt the Triumph model of respecting the past while looking to the future.
They'll still be cranking out the legacy air cooled bikes for those that want them.
Would love to see a version of the Revolution engine on a bigger bike, too.

It seems Honda Rebel 1100 is comparable to this Nightster but Nightster is 30% more! Longtime Harley rider but I wish they would put ride modes, adjustable levers, traction control on touring bikes w/o spending over 30k!

Agreed. 100%. I own a 2022 rebel 1100 and a 2022 road king special. Also own a 2008 Nightster and a 2010 Dyna. This nightster has the HD badge but other that resembles my Rebel way more than my other HD products. Seems like a great bike and definitely a new (welcome) direction for the MoCo. Bet they give us a 975 Pan America soon too.

Modes, modes, modes, modes. Information displays, gear indicators. . . . .
My 1969 Triumph Bonneville had none of this. Growing up on a motorcycles and now 51 years of age I sure miss how uncomplicated motorcycles were.
Easy to fix and so wonderful to ride.
There's too much tech software in bikes today.

@@lenBrill1971 I removed the rear brake lever on my 1972 H2, mostly because I kept gouging my shin kick starting, but also because the rear wheel tended to slide sideways when I used the rear brake. It is easier to control front wheel slide than rear, or maybe I am just luckier with front wheel slides.

Great video Ryan. Not for me, I don't like the sound and it's look and feel seems quite cheap based on pics and your review. Even with after market pipes I'm not convinced the rev max will not sound as good as an air cooled bike. I could be wrong on the sound, will wait to hear one go past me.
Hope it sells well, its cool HD is trying a diff direction but I won't be sharing it. I have cash in my hand for a new bike and I'll be spending it on another manufacturer. The cost of HD has gone through the roof in Aust compared to other brands. The bike is a few thousand too expensive especially based on the fact most will spend a lot on P&A to bring it up to specs. Also the fact the Aust models sold here are no longer made in the USA is a big drawback.
Lastly good to see HD also bringing in the content creators, it's a positive to be engaging the community.

I am really enjoying the collaboration effort of HD Corp pairing up with our favorite motorcycle UA-camrs. I have learned so much watching their videos, they are entertaining as well and bringing them together to review motorcycles is awesome. HD Corp ought to bring in Jason Momoa to one of these events and let him direct a video with all these folks. Still in awe how Ryan, Jerry & Donna Palladino and Robert Simmons can ride these motorcycles. Much respect. Maybe one day HD Corp can bring these four together to highlight how these machines can be ridden.

The way you leaned into those corners was almost enough to make me want to trade in my 2016 Night Rod Special for a Nightster --- almost, though not quite!! Ha ha ha!! I ride my Night Rod that way!! All that aside though, the Nightster looks like a great bike to ride. The only drawback I could see was as you pointed out, the limited capacity fuel tank. Which explains why I have a ight Rod, because I luvvvvvv cruising the highways! See you in the next video, Ryan!

Na, “people “ don’t hate that you like the bike, just me. I’m just one person, not “people “😂.
I don’t hate the bike or that you guys like it. I hate how Harley Davidson has taken over everyone’s YT channels. It’s as clear as the nose on your face but everyone wants to pretend they aren’t biased with these reviews when it’s almost impossible not to be. Harley flies you around the country, pays the bills, treats you like royalty, gives you gifts and freebies, and buys your reviews…….unbiased of course. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Listen, it’s basic psychology. Harley knows exactly what they’re doing. They aren’t doing this because they like you so much, they want your positive reviews of their motorcycles on your channels and that’s exactly what they are getting. All unbiased of course. This bike is cool. It’s nothing special (except for Harley) but it’s a modern, 90hp, lightweight, modern retro, bike that is wildly overpriced. They make ridiculous reveal videos about nothing. They fly UA-camrs around the country and spend a fortune on them and they need to recoup those costs by way of an overpriced motorcycle. This bike is only $13,500 in videos not in reality. Just see how many people pick one up for $13,500. None, that’s how many. Freight $575, surcharges $500, painted air box $400 = $15,000 before it reaches the dealership floor. Then there dealership fees to content with at that point. That’s the price of this bike. Not that smoke screen of $13,500 everyone keeps blabbing. It’s dishonest to keep saying it. So yeah, I’m not “people “ just one guy, but I absolutely, positively, am not down with the corporate greed and the Harley takeover of everyone’s YT channels, and I’ll be unsubbing from this nonsense.

@@robbyclark6915 Speaking as a viewer of Ryan's videos and all the other UA-cam creators, they have EARNED my respect by giving us years of honest content. Sure they like Harleys but they have also been critical too. This has been the best marketing plan ever. Get credible UA-cam creators to give us a early view. Non of these people say all is perfect. They give their view but all say give it a ride yourself when you get a chance.

@@sportyonetaubert5923 Respect? When did I say I don’t respect them? What’s respect got to do with it? You let your “feelings” about someone cloud your better judgment when you talk like that. I have serious doubts and concerns about ANYONE being able to give an honest, critical, unbiased, analysis of any product when the creator of that product is gifting them things, flying them around, paying their way, giving them the red carpet treatment. It’s basic human psychology. Make them “feel” special and have a great time and get all warm and fuzzy and they will give you a 👍review. You’re absolutely correct in that, this has been the best “marketing plan” ever by Harley. That’s exactly what it is and nothing more, marketing. I will venture to say that not one person who was on this “ride and review” trip will have any serious concerns or issues with this motorcycle. I could be wrong but I doubt it. Besides, you act like I think there’s a problem with the actual motorcycle? No one ever wants to address my actual comment, my actual concern with this motorcycle; the price. It’s too expensive for what you get. It’s going to be $15k before it reaches the dealership. You know what? Why do I have to keep repeating myself? People only hear what they want to hear anyway. Everyone can have fun on their overpriced, underpowered, Harley “sport” bike that can’t keep up with a Kawasaki z900rs or a Yamaha xsr900 that have more tech and cost thousands less. If that’s what you want then fine, but don’t act like Harley did a great job here with this bike at this price. They didn’t.

    • @sportyonetaubert5923
      @sportyonetaubert5923 2 роки тому

@@robbyclark6915 I guess I trust these guys to give me the straight skinny more than you. So your main beef is the price, that's fine you don't see the value. I agree you could find bikes that give more performance per dollar. But if I was basing my choice on what I get per dollar, I would only drive cars. In our culture motorcycles tend to not be totally rational choices. I mean who really needs ANY motorcycle over $1000. Just ask Shadetree. 😄

Best test of the Nightster I've seen so far.
A great new release from Harley and with the sporty high-revving engine the first Harley that definitely fits my booty scheme.
But what nobody could explain to me:
why doesn't the new engine have a 45 degree V angle? With that at least a little bit of Harley's signature sound could have been saved, water cooling or not.
Even more mysterious: why does this new engine on top of its 60 degree V angle have a 30 degree crank pin offset only to end up with the spark spacing and sound of a 90 degree V2 engine (or profane MT-07)?
    What's the benefit?
    Acoustically clearly only disadvantageous.
Maybe Harley will one day deign to explain to potential customers what they were thinking.

Great video. Very professional. Thanks for putting Jerry on, a fellow Floridian. Too bad about H-D not moving away from the air-cooled engine. A Revolution engine on a bagger would certainly entice me trade my twin cam for a modern, more powerful water-cooled touring bike. I think a water-cooled touring bike would attract Gold Wing riders.

Hi..interesting insights on harley davidsons.....redesigned engines...I'm impressed by the technology..but I like them Evo.s...I have 05 tc...96 softail..the bikes are old....but ride ...its fun..loud...I've delt with wire issues on my 96.....cam tensioner on the 05....but I enjoy working on em....yup even broke down..usually something fixable....today's menu 96...wire bugs.....the newer bikes are impressive but they are not really much home mechanical friendly....and I can see the days of v twins..carburetor engines are numbered...what's sad is...younger riders will never know the feeling of these engines running and the vibration and the smells of oil..gas...the temperamental nature of these engines..the clunk of shifting gears.....all these things are refined out.. because of salabity and government overreach....these are the dog days of summer for engines that to me defines a motorcycle experience...now it's been smoothed out for a newer rider...change but kicking the best part of what harley was about to the curb....I remember Long time ago..in a thunder press magazine...a article entitled..We're dumping the carburetor for EFI....like after almost a hundred years..carburetors were never appreciated...I like harley but not its new version of the future..but things evlove...just think....many years from now 100s of people paying money..to see a carburetorrated v twin engine run and sit by and see thunder by everyone...for me I'm very fortunate to have had these bikes and the joys and frustration of working on them...

HD should make a full on hyper naked to compete with the Super Duke, Speed Triple, S1000R, etc. They revolution platform would be a good starting point. The nightster and sportster s are 70% of the way to that segment already. For me, if I were rich I would have a nightster in the garage, but since I am a one bike guy, I prefer the naked sport bikes. This is a great looking bike though.

I went from a Sportster to a 15 Road Glide Special. Felt like a bicycle when I got on my Sportster and my RGS handled as good if not better. As us boomers fade off into the sunset the MOCO is losing its dominant customer base. It’s seems the intention is to go the metric way which is ok for a company looking beyond the boomers. Unfortunately they have a lot to learn entering a refined motorcycle genre. They will also have to price scale to the Japanese market which dominates the motorcycle industry

    • @toofastnobrakes
      @toofastnobrakes 2 роки тому

I agree with most of that. But I see Harley trying to scale with the European bikes over the Japanese bikes. They just have no way to compete with the Japanese bike prices without losing money. As long as there made in the US

I'm a millennial doing research to get my first motorcycle and I'm way more interested in a Sportster personally. The HD stunt scene is getting a lot of attention from younger generations, especially the Dynas and Sportsters. I personally prefer a Sportster because its simple to modify and the aftermarket options are limitless. I can convert the 883 to a 1250 in my garage with a few buddies if I really wanted to. These computerized bikes will end most of that and thats what I believe makes HD so special. If they killed the Sportster and this was what HD had to offer, I would probably just go with a Kawasaki Z650 or something along those lines.

@@benyo3622 A late model 883 (mines a 2016) is a computerised bike... but that's a good thing. You can remap them on the fly with a tuner and read diagnostics off the speedo. These new bikes will be no different, although, more difficult to big bore due to the water cooling... if of course anyone bothers to make the kits.

The Motor Company first felt pressure from Europe and responded with research and development of the Revolution engine. It was clear then that European governments were on the cusp of new regulations for sound, emissions and power units that will not be modified after purchase. The future is electric friends. The EU, California (seventh largest economy in the world) and the United States government already have laws in place, check the dates. Harley-Davidson has.
