BIG BOY No. #4014
From Union Pacific’s web page
“BIG BOY No. 4014 -Twenty-five Big Boys were built exclusively for Union Pacific Railroad, the first of which was delivered in 1941. The locomotives were 132 feet long and weighed 1.2 million pounds. Because of their great length, the frames of the Big Boys were "hinged," or articulated, to allow them to negotiate curves. They had a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement, which meant they had four wheels on the leading set of "pilot" wheels which guided the engine, eight drivers, another set of eight drivers, and four wheels following which supported the rear of the locomotive. The massive engines normally operated between Ogden, Utah, and Cheyenne, Wyo.
There are seven Big Boys on public display in various cities around the country. They can be found in St. Louis, Missouri; Dallas, Texas; Omaha, Nebraska; Denver, Colorado; Scranton, Pennsylvania; Green Bay, Wisconsin; and Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Big Boy No. 4014 was delivered to Union Pacific in December 1941. The locomotive was retired in December 1961, having traveled 1,031,205 miles in its 20 years in service. Union Pacific reacquired No. 4014 from the Rail Giants Museum in Pomona, California, in 2013, and relocated it back to Cheyenne to begin a multi-year restoration process. It returned to service in May 2019 to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad’s completion.

Seeing something this big alone is a treat but seeing it actually work is mind boggling. Back in the day these behemoths were the norm as we had nothing better. As diesel ran them out of business, we can now appreciate them for what they are; an engineering masterpiece. A big thanks goes out to those who restore these monsters, often using tools and techniques long forgotten. Many thanks to the crew and the people behind putting this beauty back on the rails. Thanks to you for capturing this historic event for us.
You think that's big, You should see another American locomotive that's Longer than big boy by length. As known as the Pennsylvania railroad S1 that used to exist
I believe this is the only running Big Boy, there is one sitting on display at a Transport Museum in the St. Louis, MO region.
@@hisaddle There are a handful sitting around in various museums, but yes, 4014 is the last of her kind that will ever run the rails. The others have deteriorated far to much, especially the outdoor static displays.
All the steam locomotives run at californi staterr in sacramento fyi

That's one beautiful locomotive, thanks from Australia.
One word comes to my mind…MAGNIFICENT! Thank you for posting this and Hats off to UP and the steam crew.
Our pleasure!
That loco was built by the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady, NY. American design. American craftsmanship by American craftsmen. Were the diesel locos that replaced it "better"? Depends on how you define "better". I look at this loco and am in awe of what it took to build it and operate it. I am also in awe of UP's programs to get these locos going again and keep them going.
2 of my uncles were welders at ALCO at that time. Maybe they welded on them?
Солидарна❤
They were better or they never would have replaced these beautiful lumps of gorgeous engineering and craftsmanship, that's a stupid question to ask because it's so obvious. You could run numerous diesels off the savings of removing a single steam loco from the mix. Remove them all and you save money hand over fist because you no longer require 2/3 of your maintenance infrastructure. Steam gals are neeeeeeedy, lots of stuff to manually take care of and monitor; I mean look at how much of what powers them is just open to the elements! It's gorgeous to watch, sure, but it adds hours to every maintenance, and weight to the minds of the crews. And that's not to mention water.

How incredible is that? If you don't get a thrill from those sights and sounds you're not trying hard enough. 😊
My Dad loved trains. He was a Model Railroader and he had models of Big Boy in a couple of different scales. I watch these videos now and I can imagine the smile he would have even from watch videos like this one. Thank you for making them!
You're welcome
Love the fact they are shacking the dust off of 4014, but I know I was not the only one really disappointed when I got the email from the UP Steam Club with the 4014 summer "tour" route. Those of us out west (Reno for me) have been disappointed again. Really was hoping to be able to take my grandchildren to see this incredible time machine, hopefully UP gets it sorted for 24.
I won't live forever...and I know I ain't the only grandparent out here who dearly wants to see the Big Boy with the little ones.
Man 4014 looks amazing. Is it just me or did 4014 get the ultimate wash, wax, and polish job? Seems even nicer then in 2019!
New double light in the front too
nicer than
4015 is clean too!
He needed a good cleaning
Big old king needs his monthly cleaning after working hard all year

An absolute gem, a marvel of engineering. Congratulations to each and everyone who keeps this magnificent monster in action.
I love the 4014 whistle and I think it looks really shiny and handsome and he is the king of the rails and he is majestic
My father was sent to England in November of 1942..(Army air Corps). He was there until December of ‘44. I recall asking him if he was ever homesick. He said the only time he ever missed home was at night when he heard the whistles from American lend-lease locomotives which were so distinctive from the Brit locos. I still love that sound!
Sounds sorta similar to NW 611, but not as deep a tone
Love seeing The Big Boy and Locomotives like it still in action and running the rails. Much Appreciate these videos!🤠
Okay that’s the cleanest I’ve ever seen any steam locomotive. It’s beautiful those polished cylinder caps and polished black paint
They have converted it to run on oil instead of coal. And she is a beauty and magnificent in person. I love living where I do because she has been brought to town during our rail fest days
I remember seeing 4014 when it was still on display in Pamona, CA. Now seeing it restored and running again is very awe-inspiring.
In October 2019 I was fortunate enough to ride 4014’s excursion from West Colton to Barstow. It was a fundraiser for the Pomona rail museum.
Beautiful restoration of the caboose, another important part of history.
Can’t wait to see Big Boy soon! We’re gonna catch it in Fremont Ne and follow it on its way into Omaha. Our second time seeing it but first time we’ll see it in motion!
I grew up reading about these behemoths and how they were no longer in service . And now it's wonderful seeing them brought back to life. Just wish I could see one in person.
Theyre aweome bro
I kinda wish 4014 was assigned to a long mainline freight just like 3985 and 844 do from time to time. After all the Big Boy was originally assigned to heavy freight service over the mountain ranges on the UP’s mountainous section of the route to Ogden. It still has to show it can handle Donner Pass on the old Southern Pacific trackage.
It's cool for a few runs but think how long it takes to rebuild them nowadays. If you want it to last best to take it easy.
@@1940limited Expense maybe, but you make your own parts.
That iconic whistle brings back a lot of deep memories for a lot of people.
Back in the 1950's steam locos were still a pretty common site. My dad would take my brother and me to the Union Station in downtown Columbus Ohio to watch these beauties arrive.
Dad had been a yard worker for the railroads in his younger years and would take us down to track level where we could stand very close to these engines as they passed by us. But none of them were like the Big Boy. They were much smaller but great.
The steam the acrid smelling smoke and the rumble are and will be etched in my memory until the day I die.
Good video. New subscriber.
I was born in 1947. As a youngster in the 50s I can still remember seeing steam locomotives. They were a common sight back then.
the 4015 is soooooo clean!!!!!!
The diesel is clean, but 4014 is even cleaner.
I thought your mic was going to shred to pieces on the first couple of whistle blows! Great video.
Beautiful sight, long may she prosper and run with her awesome whistle of cheer 🇺🇸👍
You may never understand the emotions this stirs in me to see this beautiful monster pass by. (I say that with fondest meaning of "monster"). I hope by now they have fixed the packing gland leak on the off side front set of drivers. As an old B&O machinist (from the last days of steam) that troubled me.
Thank you for the slo mo at 8:30 on..., gave me a better chance to watch her valve gear. PURE POETRY in motion. And listening to her whistle moan is better than any concert..
It is great to see videos of Union Pacific 4014 Big Boy in action running on the railroad tracks. After this steam locomotive was fully restored I got to ride on a Special Excursion Train that was pulled by Union Pacific 4014 Big Boy. The date was October 12, 2019 Saturday on a Special Excursion from Colton California to Barstow California. I was in the Sunshine Special car.
REAL Happy to see 4014 Back on the move again ... Inspiring , THE Steam Engens !!
The video thumbnail had me raising eyebrows on why 4014 looked green.
Just realized that it was just so dang gleaming she was reflecting the green landscape with her black paint!
I give UP my total appreciation for preserving the past RR history so we can enjoy it .I can't imagine what cost that endeavor was to restore.
Он на мой взгляд БОГ ПАРОВОЗОВ💯💥💥💥💥 ваше видео дает мне возможность им полюбоваться😊😊😊❤❤❤❤
The company did me proud. They put a caboose on the train!
That is awesome power at its best! American!!! Great paint job too.
Awesome 👍 I saw it when it came through Jacksonville, Texas. Love to see it again
Absolutely Beautiful. Congrats to Ed and his team. God Speed #4014.
This is what Railroads are all about, The Awesome Beauty, Magesty and Power of the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy on Display for all to see and what a magnificent piece of machinery.
Would have loved being in the United States when she has been working the System.
Great Video and well Correlated with Everything, Couldn't ask for more, Really Well Done.

Thank you.
That UP 52000 flatcar load looks very interesting.
Wow... Many thanks for your videos!😊
Glad you like them!
Hey Ed looks like you and team got it ready to go be safe on the track look forward to catch it when it comes back
So beautiful in so many ways!!
I can say that I have the most unique experiance with the UP steam. I am very senior. I grew up across the street from the UP's roundhouse in North Plate, long before there was a Bailey Yard. In the earily morning hours, I was priviliged to witness and hear the dailying awakening of these behemouths and their leaving the roundhouse after a night of maintenence. Each engine had it's own unique sound and whistle. As the engines emerged, the Engineers would announce to the community that it was ready to work by blowing it's whistle. As a railroad family, it was a normal day to hear them.
Awesome footage, thank you for sharing it with us. She’s beautiful.
Our pleasure!
i know that union pacific has the only 9000 left and i think it would be awesome to see her in steam again
Thanks for the excellent video. It was nice to watch this great video.
Thank you too
I love that whistle and what an amazing sight.I remember steam engines as a boy growing up.
We saw Big Boy on the run through AZ a few years ago. It. Was epic. Looks like a new coat of paint and a caboose?
That engineer, you can tell, was living his childhood dream.
Great to know his old stock whistle from 2019-2021 is back
We love big boy in australia I first learnt about big boy in the 70s
Hey, they put the other whistle on 4014 again. Sounds awesome!
Wow! That's a very clean steam locomotive.
I saw you at this spot. I was behind you and across the tracks.
Awesome video love the old train horn
Thank you very much!
Cool! It's hauling freight cars!!! That is one big engine! The horn is amazing! I love it!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
We were also in Fremont on Sunday to see it sream in for the whistle stop before going on to Omaha. It will be on display in Omaha starting 6/15 for the college baseball world series.
Good To See The Old Girl Is Still Up And About!
You have to love the sound of the whistle. That is the iconic sound of the steam engine. It is too bad that sound can not be duplicated in the modern locomotives.
Big boy break the sound barrier
U know” I’m a South Korean old papa”
I love loco steam 4 engine 4014 Bog boy very much”
Like a super man”!!!😂😂😂😂😂
Wow, thanks!

Great video ❤
Thank you!!
Does Ed Dickens ever let anyone else behind 4014's throttle?
Its his baby so probably not 😂
Beautiful Absolutely Beautiful 🤩
i like how everyone always complains about models that you dont really here the Double chuff of the Bigboy.
But this just prooves that 4014 basically sounds pretty much like any other Steam loco from a certain speed upwards.
Had the awesome pleasure of up close with 4014 in Tucson! Come on back, Big Boy!
I will be there tomorrow on the 7 hopefully I can get a good view of this beautiful massive machine when she stops in Columbus 👍😊
Thank you for the video 🤠
Our pleasure!
Very impressive footage, I always enjoy seeing footage of big boy 4014 in operation and I am glad to see this locomotive back in service during the modern railroad era in 2023.
seeing this across nebraska starting the 10th. very excited
Magnificent catches of the steam locomotive Big Boy coming by and pass, I like it 5 stars, keep up the great work, my friend, I subscribed your channel, Greetings from Portugal to the USA.
Thank you very much!
@@railfanenthusiast6792 no problem, mate, hope you enjoy my videos.
Neat lens choices, great views of a great steamer!
Glad you enjoyed it
Fabulous!
Nice trains
Man that engine is Bad Ass!!! love the steam whistle also.
Amazing and beautiful.
Clean as a brit steamer...almost. :)
Boy, I am so happy to see 4014's Hancock whistle back. 844's whistle on it was great and all but the one she's had since 2019 I prefer more on the big boy.
The whistle that 844 was wearing, and that 4014 wore for that trip down to Denver, is actually the 4014's whistle from back in its original career in the 40's and 50's.
AND THEY CHANGED IT BACK! 🤬
BACK TO THE STOCK ONE
@@justahillbilly7777 Ik, I'm just saying I think the whistle 4014 has worn since 2019 suits the engine more compared to the whistle that came from 844
What a great birthday gift!
Such a beautiful beast!

cool phasing teknique at the start of the video. never seen that before!!!
That horn!! ❤
Now that’s a train nice to see steam again
Man nice catch this was a lucky day for you!!!
Yes it was!
Phenomenal !
Nice of Ed to hit the whistle every time he sees a camera
There's our beautiful locomotive, she's just a beauty. Is Big Boy 4014 going to be doing excursions this year? That would be my dream, or being in the cab operating her. Thanks for this. Waiting for many more.
Currently in route to Omaha and returning back to Cheyenne 1st part of July. Will have more before long.
Wish I could see something like this on the East Coast 👍🏾
He’s a beautiful boy
OMG that thing is massive WOW WOW WOW!
looks like a green livery in certain light/angle .
very nice
Went tho St Paul. 2019 we saw it it was a treat
It's great to hear 4014's whistle on her again! It fits much better than 844's.
Agreed

@@justahillbilly7777 I didn't know that. I still think this whistle sounds better.
@@TrainsAreReallyCoolYeah and this whistle that 4014 wore is when Union Pacific donated the locomotive in 1962 to be displayed.
She's a beauty.
Love that big boy
*4014 is a spectacle unlike any other.*
I love to see BIGBOY 4014 back on the tracks again it`s time.!!!!!!
It's so exciting to see the Big Boy back on the rails, by far the greatest restoration of any locomotive. I wonder why it has two light bulbs though
@@rearspeaker6364 Or Temu.
@@rearspeaker6364. Is that a good thing?
Love the deep resonant train horn.
I believe it's required by the FRA. The original headlamp is impossible to obtain, and would not satisfy the Feds in the modern era anyway. I could be totally wrong. It's a good question for Ed Dickens at one of his Q and As, which I've enjoyed immensely down in Denver.
@@leerhode1021 Buying anything off of Amazon is NEVER a good thing.
subbed beautiful!
Wow that's the sound of real RAILROADING!
Wow; I think that is the first time I've seen a video where 4014 is really giving some "stack talk" of any kind. Maybe Ed and the UP are finally getting more comfortable with letting her do what the Ol' Gal was meant to do all along - work hard and show it with pride.
I honestly have to disagree, there's footage of 4014 absolutely thundering on its way back from Ogden in 2019 (Stowe Creek is where it was really loud, and there's video of it on UA-cam), and at least one other occasion also. Big thing is that the land Big Boy has often run on during its tours is much flatter than its normal stomping grounds in the steam era. Hence why it doesn't work so hard in many cases, the engine is almost OP for the trackage and could possibly go 80 MPH with a train on some of those spots.
If you want this loco to stay in working order for very long you don't want them pushing it. The manpower to rebuild these things once a month doesn't exist anymore. So if it needs rebuilt it'll e down for a while again. Want it to last, take it easy on her.
@@jordanalexander615 From what I understand, Ed doesn't like running 4014 light. Ed always has her pulling a load, hence the hoppers.
@@jordanalexander615 I'm afraid you have that a bit backwards, locomotives like these actually need to be stressed every so often to keep their joints free and stop them from seizing. It's the same as exercising a muscle to keep it from atrophying, steam locomotives need to be put under a load every now and again to keep from going derelict. Actually, most large machines are like this, such as tanks and large trucks needing to be run every so often to ensure their engines are still in functional order.
@@jacobgreve802 yeah but it they have to rebuild the superheater tubing sooner it'll be down awhile. That's what 3985 experienced when it was rebuilt years ago. Took quite a long time compared to when they had people ready to do it at any time.
Excellent camera work as always. Great picture and sound quality. Listening on headphones is amazing! The high standard of finish to the paint and the fittings is plain to see in this video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
For how many years did people say a Big Boy will never run again?
