  • Welcome to another fast-paced adventure with the UP Steam Crew and the Union Pacific "Big Boy" No. 4014! For the year of 2023, Union Pacific management was gracious enough to grant the UP Steam Crew the opportunity to run the Big Boy for the "2023 Home Plate Express"-A special move to Omaha, Nebraska where the locomotive will stand on display in celebration of the 2023 College Baseball World Series.
    In this video, watch as the train departs Cheyenne on a beautiful summer morning. At Egbert, the locomotive and train is turned Northward onto Union Pacific's Yoder subdivision. Union Pacific 844 was the most recent locomotive to traverse this line, back in 2012. However, it is our understanding that prior to this trip, a Big Boy locomotive had never traversed this territory before, making this a historic and big moment in UP Steam History.
    From Egbert, we travel North to the day's first stop of Albin, WY. We then set up post in the typical Wyoming wind to watch 4014 dive into the famed "Albin Tunnel." We then wrap up with one more run-by, just South of the day's next service stop of La Grange.
    Stay with us now, as this latest railfanning adventure is just getting started! Rate. Comment. Subscribe. ENJOY!!! Copyright Nick Valdez Railroad Photography 2023.

    One really great thing that Union Pacific Railroad did around 1960 when they quit using these Big Boy locomotives was donating 8 of these locomotives to Railroad Museums. As a result many years later Union Pacific was able to select and restore Union Pacific 4014 Big Boy. There were many railroad companies that completely scrapped all of their steam locomotives. As a result all we have is historical pictures of these steam locomotives. There are none of them in museums and none restored. This is true of the New York Central Hudson steam locomotives. There are no examples of the Hudson steam locomotives around today.

      @jeffreymartin6369 It is a well established fact that hudsons from the new york central were all scrapped. Other Hudson's are as different from the New York Central Hudsons as a Ford is from a Chevy.

    I dreamed of the day when a Big Boy 4-8-8-4 steam locomotive would be put back into service, always being told that "it will never happen," that they were just "too big" to run on the modern railroad.
    I followed closely when it was announced that UP4014 was chosen as the candidate for restoration. It seems like only yesterday when work began to extract and move 4014 to the steam locomotive shops, and 2019 was a far-off date of completion. It is a beautiful engine that rolled out of its stall that eventful year; job well done!
    Now I'm watching the building, new, of the next in the series of PRR T1 4-4-4-4 duplex express passenger locomotives. It is anecdotally the fastest class of steam locomotives ever built. I hope it, the PRR 5550, is done before I am!

    how long time does it take to fire this massive engine up ?

    • @Wolfgodmak
      @Wolfgodmak Рік тому +2

      Most likely 3-4 hours give or take because it’s literally two engines sharing one boiler (articulated/hinged wheels) i could be wrong though but its my guess because of the massive size and where the water/steam gotta travel, the fire to build the engine up and feeding its oil to burn.

    • @psycotria
      @psycotria Рік тому

      I believe that it is gently warmed up over days with externally generated steam to prevent firebox and boiler wear, and kept in steam for the duration of its excursions. They were originally fired with coal, but this one was successfully converted to oil. The massive firebox must be one giant fire tornado of burning fuel! Tending the fire must take skill to prevent shock cooling or heating of the giant firebox and boiler. UP's original attempts to use oil in the 1940s and '50s were not successful.

      Union Pacific has explained the reasoning in a number of videos and interviews with Ed Dickens.
      1, It provides the Positive Train Control (PTC) data and systems that then feed that data via cable to the in-cab displays on the 4014.
      2, it provides dynamic braking on long, descending grades to cut back on brake shoe wear. The big boy uses custom-made cast-iron brake shoes that are expensive. Far less maintenance and cost when you can slow the train using dynamic braking only.
      3, it provides an insurance policy to keep the train moving should the 4014 develop any issues. They can’t risk any delays and blocked main lines.
      The diesel does NOT provide power the coaches. That power comes from generator cars. You can always see one in the train.
