The fact you can still hear 4014s steam whistle while the train was that far down track and all that IM freight going by is simply just testament to how loud that whistle and engine is in general.
I was able to see this magnificent engine come through northeast Oklahoma, truly a massive Machine, and an engineering masterpiece, and this one Was built with slide rules not computers and Auto Cad...
I love Big Boy and it’s such a majestic locomotive . What disappoints me is she’s running on oil and not coal . Having grown up in India where my Dad served on the Southern Railway first on steam and then electric traction nothing beats a coal fired loco and to see that mighty firebox lying idle beats me . Why was she converted to oil power ? Cheers and thank you from Australia .
Freaken awesome! Green Engines!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰 (8:19) I am not sure: how is the oil flowing on the crank arm; too the bearing. ((flex hose))?? = Likely should be a 2 way - grease zerk, at junction, would be the pressure test valve, no??? 😎🥲😅Oh, no! (28:18) I guess you using the drain plugs, to install the big oil pumper. 🤠🤠🥹😱😱🥵🥵🥵🥵😳Yea, right, someone stole the catalytic converter! 😳🤪
The diesel engine is there to provide electric power to the coaches, communications to the dispatchers, and also serves as backup in case of steam engine failure. Rail transportation in the US is generally on a strict schedule, and delays would cost the railroad and the companies they serve a lot of money.
MAN !!! This just makes you wonder what it was like back in the '40's and early '50's when you're out in the "Badlands" of Wyoming, Utah, CO, or wherever. You're in the middle of nowhere at a random "Poage" water column...the wind is howling...you're the Fireman, so you get on the ground in 9 degree blowing COLD so you can put the Alimite Guns to work. Oh! and did I mention you having to take a SERIOUS "dump" just before you stepped off the engine? It's just you right? Hey !!! Pay attention to your tender...It's just starting to overflow... CRAP!!! This ladies and Gentlemen the above is just a "slight delve" of what these guy's went trough while on the road and what you're watching here, is a "Normal" day to day operation in Pleasentville, USA...think twice O.K.?
I think they should paint the diesels BLACK- and fix them to look like coal tenders or something... AND NOT blow the diesel horn-- that ruins the effect..
What are you all the same Big boy and very very handsome, many years to you BEAUTIFUL
Just love the big boy❤4014 Never get tired of it,,,👍👏👏🚂
I wish we could chase it every season of the year!
😊
Now that's a grease job! Absolutely one beautiful mechanical monster!!
Nothing but respect for this grand old ledgend of steam and history.
4014 will live forever on the rails and in our USA,🇺🇸
think of the shear power. thank u for restoring 💪🚂🇺🇸
Amazing 👏👏👏
Saw Big Boy on the First Tour as he came through Benson Arizona. I’ll never forget it.
The enthusiasm of the residents was so lively when the steam train was about to leave
The people watching bis almost as fun as watching the locomotive and crew!
ohh I just love it
30:44 Those Big Boy sideburns mean business! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
That is Jimmy Thompson, sometimes he has them sometimes he doesn’t

Very true! I try to always have ear plugs in when I chase it. Sometimes I forget, and regret it!

27:40 that is an absolutely massive firebox
I'd love to see her just once 😊
Big Boy onward to the next freight train rescue.

You would not understand this bunny in the United States our presidents stopped us from digging coal it's no longer accessible
There's something about the big boys energy and power..
I bet the ground shakes like a earthquake when she roars by
Some have tools and needed supplies. One is where some of the crew sleep.

The power of coal 👍👍
Running on oil now. Her coal days are done.
Does thw big boy has hollow axles? At 4:27 it looks so😮
I can't get over of that over engineered boomerang shape bracket for the valve gear.
tell me the history why these trains have bells and why they stil use them
How often do they have to water that thing up? Used to be every 10 miles. Does anyone know?
From what I have seen from chasing at night they fill it up.
So, I'm guessing it's running with 3 tenders, one oil and two water tenders?
The yellow are water tenders
That whistle sounds like it belongs on a cruise ship!
Why did they have both the Big Boy and the diesel blowing their horns coming into town ? First time I've seen that .
I am bot sure. I will have to remember to ask Ed when I see him next.
Wofür fährt der UP 4015 immer hinter dem UP 4014 her?

i thought bell sounded only when arms are in motion
I wish! The bells get a bit old after a bit

Back in the day it had to be extremely hard work. You bring up some good points to think about.
141R SNCF of course.

It was odd the diesel horn was blowing. It didn’t do that the whole time I chased.
@@railgraphix Of course there could have been a problem- but they really shouldn't use that while hooked to steam..
