This is one of my 3 favorite movies ever, as well as a top 2 performance of all time by Mickey Rourke for me. I watch it at least once a year, and I cry several times throughout it every single rewatch. The match he had before his heart attack is called “Deathmatch Wrestling.” It’s very underground. I don’t know how familiar you are with ECW, but that’s the promotion that popularized it. ECW/Deathmatch Wrestling was the response to the Grunge movement of the 90s. It takes a completely separate set of skills and pain tolerance than your typical wrestling. Definitely subscribed. Great reaction and she's fine as hell. I wish more people would react to this movie. Such an amazing performance by Mickey Rourke.
Mickey Rourke actually has quite a few good movies under his belt. I recommend seeing Angel Heart, Diner, Barfly (super underrated movie), 9 1/2 Weeks and Year of the Dragon. I was glad to see him making quality films again with The Wrestler.
Great reaction to this, lol'd at your face when blading first was being set up and wondered how you'd go. I'd highly recommend you watch Beyond The Mat at some point (either on channel or on your own time) as it's a real doco on pro wrestling with some faces you might know and some of the older guard, it can be as depressing as this especially when you see the people like Terry Funk that are real life Randy's with being unable to quit. It will also give you more of an insight in to the workings of pro wrestling, how things are set up etc. Also thank you for using words like choreographed, rather than "fake" :)
I personally know quite a few extras that were used in this movie! Papadon, Paul E Normus, Andrew Anderson, Brolly, Judas Young, & Pete Nixon are from a fed out in Jersey when I first met them. GREAT bunch of guys. Paul E. Normus unfortunately passed away due to heart failure. I was SO proud of him and all my boys getting to do this movie.
The long take when Randy is walking through the back of the store to go behind the deli counter is one of the greatest in film history imho; right up there with the Copa scene in Goodfellas & the hallway fight in Oldboy. Arenoskfy replicated real professional wrestler walking through the hallways of arenas leading to the their matches with that long take. One can hear the audience’s roar building apps Randy walks and then complete silence as he walks through the plastic refrigeration curtains (representing a wrestling shows curtain) to complete silence. Perfect symbolism of Randy’s fall in life professionally and personally. Brilliant.
Awesome movie. Great actor in my books, Malbro man. Mickey always did his job. Thanks for reaction keep up the fantastic job you do. Respect for Mickey an all his movies. And Chrissie as well take care.
Back in the 1980s and earlier there were some promotions that wouldn't let the bad guy aka "heel" wrestlers into the same locker room with the good guy aka "babyface" because they didn't want to risk the fans seeing them talking to each other. So, all the wrestlers would know is which one was going to win and how. Other than that, the wrestlers would "call it in the ring" aka tell each other what move to do and when while they were out there in front of the audience. They were just really good at hiding it. The main event matches would sometimes even go for an hour long. And the wrestlers would also work a feud together night after night in a different town every night, so they would get used to working with each other and get the matches better and better every time.
Yes I have. It definitely is. A couple of people from my hometown are in it. One is Chelsea Edmunson(who played Kevin's wife). And Scott Innes (as a ring announcer). Although Scott is best known as a voice actor.@@MrAiDJ

This is a wonderful reaction video! You've given us a very sensitive and astute critique of the film. Thank you! If you ever want to go down the Mickey Rourke rabbit hole, I recommend a few of his earliest films, however and wherever you can find them: Love in the Hamptons is a short student film which gives us his very first role on any kind of celluloid. City in Fear has him playing a serial killer. Act of Love, with Ron Howard, really shows off his emotional range at that stage in his career. In the 80s: Pope of Greenwich Village is a must, following that up with 9 and 1/2 Weeks, Diner, Barfly, and Francesco. Later works that offer up some of the best of Mickey Rourke are the Sin City films and a bit of a sleeper in Ashby, a quirky buddy comedy with a sober thread running through it, which owes a lot to the classic movie Harold and Maude. Mickey has been in a lot of duds and phones in a few roles just to get a paycheck BUT when he pours himself into a role with love and dedication, magic happens.
Tremendous reaction Chrissie to a great film!!! Not sure if you know or not, but in the scenes when he was working the deli counter, he was really working the deli counter, those were real customers & people were looking at him weird trying to figure out how they knew him!!! Darren Aronofski wanted it to be as real as it gets!!!
I've never watched a movie that drew such sadness out of me, as this one. And it's an incredible achievement. It does it in a way that makes you consider the things in your own life you don't want to lose, and who you really want to be. What you want to live for. How to deal with your demons. Who you really are. It's sad in the best way for me. I can't watch it every day, but it's one of my top 10 favorite movies nonetheless. And Mickie Rourke killed it in this role.
An amazing performance by Mickey Rourke (who was always, together with Gary Oldman, one of my favorite actors), and an equally great performance (let's not forget that) by Marisa Tomei. Another Mickey Rourke movie (and imo his best performance) is ''Angel Heart'' (1986) also with Robert De Niro and Lisa Bonet, is one of my all time favorite movies. Highly recommended!

Criminally underated film roake and tomai are both great and this movie shines a light on how bad the wrestling entertainment industry is to the wrestlers how many die of drugs and alcohol trying to suppress the pain they are in
He's awesome in Sin City 2005 and also in Iron Man 2 2009. He's awesome in Year of The Dragon 1985, Angel Heart 1986, Barfly 1986 and Johnny Handsome 1989.
Good vid, Chrissie. It's a film that stays in yer head a few days afterwards. The golden Age of Wrestling was in the 80s which accounts for his disdain of the 90s, when the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) had to change its name to WWE for a ridiculous reason. It was a harbinger of a corporatized, boneless, overproduced, and too-slick operation.
Having seen them all, I think this is Aronofsky's best movie. But The Fountain is my favorite of his, just a beautiful heartbreak sci-fi mindfuck about the fear of death. Worth watching no matter what.
@@USCFlash Requiem is great too, absolutely. Super dark, effective and depressing. I think The Fountain fits between that and this but it's elevated by an overall audiovisual beauty.
@@TimFisheroo I was kind of down on Fountain, the film itself, Jackman, the pre production issues and stuff made it a bit less than i feel it could have been with Pitt and a bigger budget. But The FOuntain definitely was some of his finest work in terms of the audiovisual as you said so well.
@@USCFlash I honestly think losing Pitt and Blanchett and the bigger budget worked in favor of the movie. The visual effects are stunning and Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz give such earnest performances that would have been overshadowed by Pitt's star power at the time and I can't see anyone playing Izzi/Isabel than Weisz even though I think Blanchett is a brilliant actor.
I'd suggest another little-known film Rourke was in called Bullet, also starring Adrien Brody, Ted Levine, and Tupac Shakur. His character in it, along with most everyone else's, is tragic much like this film but it is a fascinating journey and very well-made.
Stellar film about ageing and insecurity. You can feel Rourke's heart is in the role. I may be incorrect, but I think this was inspired by the documentary, 'Beyond the Mat'. Worth a watch if you can find it.
hardcore wrestling is like that we imitated the hardcore stuff a lot back when I used to do backyard at like 15-19, and like.. it was tough on the body then (although I will say, the blood to pain ratio is not 1-1 and sometimes the more painful looking stuff isn't as bad as the stuff that looks easier to take) I couldn't imagine doing it now in my mid-30s, let alone 20 years from now - and that is a reality for a lot of pro wrestlers
a few other great mickey rourke films - angel heart, 9-1/2 weeks, pope of greenwhich village, bullet, barfly, and he was actually really great in the movie spun too. there's a great film called buffalo 66 that rourke has a cameo in, highly recommend that one especially if you liked the wrestler, it's a masterpiece that no one has done a reaction to yet.
@@jamk2668 absolutely! buffalo 66 was a cult hit back in the 90's and now i hardly ever hear anyone talk about it. same thing with bad lieutenant, that's another masterpiece (the original, not the nick cage remake)
This was all filmed around the corner from where I lived! Even the go-go bar is where i used to chill with my friends, lol. This movie is very personal with me.
Modern pro wrestling is fairly well planned out move by move, especially the TV stuff where the ref has an earpiece in and is getting reminders to cue the wrestlers for certain spots, but up until the late 90s the only thing that was worked out ahead of time was how the match was going to finish and how much time they had. Everything else was called in the ring by the heel (bad guy) based on what was working with that crowd that night. Also, "gigging" with a razor blade is how they bleed 95% of the time. Different guys hide it in different places and the really good ones can blade without you knowing it even when you're watching closely.
9:19. This is professional wrestling not underground. Some promotions prefer an extreme even brutal form of wrestling that involves barbed wire or actual glass.
Loved this movie! But so sad 😢

The visual effects are stunning and Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz give such earnest performances that would have been overshadowed by Pitt's star power at the time and I can't see anyone playing Izzi/Isabel than Weisz even though I think Blanchett is a brilliant actor.

yea weisz was great, jackman just bugs me. i think with the bigger budget, the majesty of it would have been amazing.
This movie is so good. Hard to believe it's 16 years old. I choose to believe he got the 1,2,3 over the ayatollah, and then gave Marissa the RamJam.
You should see M. Rourke in Angel Heart, 1987, dir. by Alan Parker.
I'd suggest another little-known film Rourke was in called Bullet, also starring Adrien Brody, Ted Levine, and Tupac Shakur. His character in it, along with most everyone else's, is tragic much like this film but it is a fascinating journey and very well-made.
That IS the guy, Judah Freidlander. I also really like him as Toby Radloff in American Splendor.
Stellar film about ageing and insecurity. You can feel Rourke's heart is in the role.
I may be incorrect, but I think this was inspired by the documentary, 'Beyond the Mat'. Worth a watch if you can find it.
hardcore wrestling is like that
we imitated the hardcore stuff a lot back when I used to do backyard at like 15-19, and like.. it was tough on the body then (although I will say, the blood to pain ratio is not 1-1 and sometimes the more painful looking stuff isn't as bad as the stuff that looks easier to take)
I couldn't imagine doing it now in my mid-30s, let alone 20 years from now - and that is a reality for a lot of pro wrestlers
The movie actually did well in theaters. 6 million budget and made nearly 50.
Masterpiece.
Make it a Wrestling month and watch Nacho Libre, Iron Claw, Foxcatcher and Fighting With My Family
"9-1/2 Weeks" would fit right into your channel's style, along with some other Adrian Lyne movies.
Amazing film
a few other great mickey rourke films - angel heart, 9-1/2 weeks, pope of greenwhich village, bullet, barfly, and he was actually really great in the movie spun too. there's a great film called buffalo 66 that rourke has a cameo in, highly recommend that one especially if you liked the wrestler, it's a masterpiece that no one has done a reaction to yet.
Don't forget Rumble Fish. The motorcycle boy reigns.
@@gridplan i gave rumble fish a shot but i just couldn't get into it
I've yet to see anyone react to Buffalo '66 which is surprising to me. It's a rare kind of masterpiece.
He has a small part in the horror satire Fade To Black
@@jamk2668 absolutely! buffalo 66 was a cult hit back in the 90's and now i hardly ever hear anyone talk about it. same thing with bad lieutenant, that's another masterpiece (the original, not the nick cage remake)
This was all filmed around the corner from where I lived! Even the go-go bar is where i used to chill with my friends, lol. This movie is very personal with me.
His comeback movie wasnt Wrestler. It was his legendary turn as Marv in Miller, Rodriquez, & Tarantinos Sin City three years prior
Ah! My bad. I need to watch that one.
Very powerful movie
Modern pro wrestling is fairly well planned out move by move, especially the TV stuff where the ref has an earpiece in and is getting reminders to cue the wrestlers for certain spots, but up until the late 90s the only thing that was worked out ahead of time was how the match was going to finish and how much time they had. Everything else was called in the ring by the heel (bad guy) based on what was working with that crowd that night.
Also, "gigging" with a razor blade is how they bleed 95% of the time. Different guys hide it in different places and the really good ones can blade without you knowing it even when you're watching closely.
One of my favourite movies ever
9:19. This is professional wrestling not underground. Some promotions prefer an extreme even brutal form of wrestling that involves barbed wire or actual glass.
Great movie. Thanks Chrissie.😊
Would the documentary you saw happen to be beyond the mat?
