- Gday, This is part 2 of the Boring and facing head build, this time round I get the side and gib made and do a quick sub assemble to see how its looking so far, I hope you enjoy the video, Cheers
Email - mattysworkshop76@gmail.com.
Good progress Matty. I'd be putting an oil port in the spare hole and then dare people to tell you it's not meant to be there.😂
Gday Preso, thats not a bad idea really, I was thinking of drill a hole and putting a nice piece of brass in there, Thanks for watching mate, Cheers
Brilliant!
Best regards! - to the both of you!
Steuss
Great minds think alike mate 👍
4mm press-in ball oiler. Drill through the gib, and make some more ‘oil-retaining-marks’ on the back ( sliding) face of the gib
Hey Presto ( hey Presso ? 🤣🤣)
That is a big project Matty…. Can’t wait to see all the other ‘bits’, and then the assembly.
Keep Punchin’
Robert
G'day Matty - put the oiler in like Preso said, then tell your mate he left an oil port out of the drawings but you picked it up during the build...
Great work truly a Master at work, thanks for showing the Kangaroos we don't have those here in the Appalachian Mountains in North Georgia
Thanks mate, you quite welcome to have these Roos
Well, there's your Masterclass in precision machining. Damn fine work, Matty. Don't worry about the stuff ups...the end product is what counts and what an end product it is! Looking forward to the next part of the build. Cheers.
Thanks very much mate, Appreciate you watching, Cheers
I really appreciate your detailed approach - like fly cutting all surfaces for good finish before starting - doing the best job possible. You’re really getting superb results and high quality components. Great stuff! Thanks for the detailed explanations! Also appreciate how you obscure the plans to protect the designers ownership - that’s honourable. 👍👍
Gday, if the jobs worth doing its worth doing properly I believe, running the fly cutter over the block only took a few minutes but makes a big difference, Appreciate you watching mate, Cheers
Hi Matty, it's looking great.
Also love the kangaroos in your garden, they are sweet!
Cheers 👍💪✌
Gday, The roos are there everyday, they come right up to the back of the house, Appreciate you watching mate, Cheers
Good one Matty . 👍
Cheers mate
Nice work Matty, despite the boo-boos it will work fine. A very interesting bit of work to watch as well. Take care and enjoy the 'roos, cheers!
Thanks very much mate, appreciate you watching as always, cheers
Great job Mat. I really like your channel, very straight forward and you don’t cover up the bugger ups! lol Something that helps me with that is a simple sharpie. If you have to drill a series of holes, like you were doing, I simply put a dot approximately where they should be and confirm with drawing. Sometimes it’s so easy to forget from the drawing on the bench to the five steps to the machine! 😮
I work on very expensive aircraft parts and one miss drilled hole can literally cost tens of thousands of dollars!
Gday, I think its important to show the mistakes, it keeps its real I believe, Appreciate you watching mate, cheers
Super skilled work Matty. Looks great.
Thanks Paul, appreciate you watching mate
G'day Matty, I'm always impressed by these builds, as you know mate
Great work and video, thanks so much for sharing
Gday Ralfy, thanks mate, it’s been an enjoyable build so far, appreciate you watching, cheers
Radiusing makes it look ten times better Matty, hitting the numbers there.
Great instructions for the video, adds considerably to the content.
Thanks for sharing
Gday, Im pretty happy with the tolerances i'm getting on this build mate, The new mill makes a big difference there, Thanks for watching, Cheers
You deserve a nerve pill Matty you've done brilliantly, highlighting mistakes is the way we learn ourselves and all of us from you. Your processes and ways of working out workarounds is Masterclass.
Gday, I think it's important to show the mistakes, we all make them at some stage, appreciate you watching. Cheers
Looking good. I have been happy with the Igaging stuff.
Thanks Tom, Mitutoyo would be nice but a little out of the budget, thanks for watching mate
Very nice work my friend I'm so glad your feeling better that's going to be a very useful tool when finished
Thanks very much mate, Im looking forwards to using this when its all done, Thanks for watching, Cheers
You done good, Matty. Bloody bottler, in fact. 'N Matty, those Roos, make good soup hey.!
Gday Mark, plenty of soup ingredients here mate, thanks for watching
Nice video, Like.
Thanks for watching
Cool project! This is going to be a nice bit of kit, I stumbled across a old but nut much used Narex boring/facing head. Best addition to the workshop since the beer cooler
Sounds like you got a good deal there mate, Thanks for watching, Cheers
I use Igauging things in woodworking and find them to be very good, well made and cheaper than the bigger names.
Remember Bob Ross, no mistakes, only happy accidents.
Gday, I have Igaging scales with the touchDRO on my other mill and so far there been good but I haven't heard much about the quill dro, The price is much more inviting then the big name brands, Thanks for watching, Cheers
you do such good work, you're out here making the rest of us look bad
Gday, I make my fair share of mistakes to go with it mate don't worry, Thanks for watching, Cheers
wonderful job Matty
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Kev (uk)
Thanks very much Kev, appreciate you watching mate, cheers
A genuine Matty signature, who wouldn't want one 🤣
Thanks mate
20.38 and your rubbing the dowel pins, trying to lose 0.01😂 your'e a great engineer Matty
🤣🤣🤣 your onto to me mate
Matty the Mitutoyo Quill DRO I installed on my mill works perfectly. I don't know if a cheaper brand would compare to it. I picked mine up while it was on sale. Ask for a discount, for your channel. You may be surprised of their response. Another great video & job well done. Cheers
Gday, Id really like a Mitutoyo but the price scares me a bit, Appreciate you watching mate, Cheers
Extremely skilled, I wish I had your talents Matty
Thanks mate, This builds being a big learning curve, Appreciate you watching, Cheers
Amen
Great job Matty. I love how when we do one offs we get small identification marks on them. Makes then individual. Boy you get a great finish. Cheers Mike
Gday Mike, most of what I make get special little identification marks, Thanks for watching mate, Cheers
yes the igageing quill dro is good, beats the hell out of setting a stop on the quill and cracking the table up. on your first hole go slow to hit your number and set your quill stop after. it works great and is a huge time/arm saver. Great video as always, Thanks for doing what you do.
Gday, I’ll definitely be getting a dro for the quill, winding the knee is getting old fast, appreciate you watching mate
@@MattysWorkshop a quick nut or speed nut for the quill stop is a great combo to go along with the dro as well. can't wait for next weeks vid on this build.
@@charliesnyder1608 already have a speed nut on the quill stop, a kind view sent it in a few weeks ago
Good work Matty. I made my own quill dro using a commercial scale and my own design of bracket. Wasn’t too difficult and much less expensive than a ready made kit.
Beautiful work Matty, I've been cutting dovetails myself in the last couple of weeks on that project I'm working on, but thank Christ they are in Aluminium, so much easier to work with. 👍
Gday, The new dovetail cutter did a nice job really, Thanks for watching, Cheers
Matty, that drill spot...it's not a mistake, it's a "feature" now. Drill straight through the gib strip, plug in a small ball oiler...and you've "upgraded" it. Nice work as always !
Gday, definitely an added feature, the gib and dovetails already have there own oiling path, thanks for watching
I can't believe how fast the weeks go. Another Matty video already. :-)
there going quick mate, Thanks for watching
Had good luck with igaging good quality.
Good work as always
Thanks mate, much appreciated
Thank you for another pair of great videos Matty, stay well.
Appreciate you watching mate, Cheers
I did the same thing last week on a part I was making done drilled the center on 4 bolt spacing. The boring head is looking Matty. Cheers
Gday, there was some bad words said at the point, very frustrating mate., Thanks for watching, Cheers
@@MattysWorkshop. Just so you know an engineer friend of mine always said it’s never a mistake it’s a design feature, the extra hole is a feature allowing more adjustment. 😇
Take heart mate grandad always said if haven't made a mistake you haven't made anything
Very true words mate, Thanks for watching, Cheers
Setup is always a challenge and has a huge impact on the outcome. Nice work Matty. Thanks very much for sharing.
Gday, Certainly pays to put a lot of thought into each setup mate, Appreciate you watching, Cheers
Excellent all round, Matty. You have great machining skills. It's really coming together well. All the best, Mart.
Thanks mate, appreciate you watching
Some very intricate machining there Matty. Looking good. Looking forward to the next part. Cheers Nobby
Gday Nobby, this is an interesting build mate thats keeping me on my toes, Appreciate you watching mate, Cheers
Beautiful. . looks wonderful. .and the fit looks spot on. . nice job. Very enjoyable to watch.
Thanks mate, Appreciate you watching, Cheers
good job matty
Thanks mate
All those features and only a couple of boo boos is excellent! 😀
Not to bad overall mate, thanks for watching
Absolutely beautiful work, Matty.
Thanks very much Robert, Appreciate you watching as always mate. Cheers
"Mistakes" are just customizations!😉
There's plenty of customising going on here mate🤣, Im getting good at that, Thanks for watching, Cheers
Coming along nicely Matty. It sure is going to be a big solid boring head.
Thanks John, going to have a bit of size to it mate, thanks for watching
Great tool idea!
When I'm finished with the lathe repair, I will need to make a boring head too. I dont think I will go through the length of making it capable of facing too, but I will maybe take some design ideas from your build.
Greatly enjoying your great videos! Cheers.
Gday, there a video I did back about a year ago building a 3” boring head if your interested mate, thanks for watching
@@MattysWorkshop I built a boring head for my beyer horizontal mill some time ago, dont use it very often since I got the bridgeport. The old Head is MT3 or 4, won't fit the R8. I'm in the rare position to have multiple mills but only one lathe, which rig now bites me. never mind. Cheers!
Great job so far Matty. The little bozzo's give it its own character. I use I-gaging scales on both my mills and the lathe with a BluDRO unit bluetoothed to a 7" android tablet. . I have the I-gaging quill unit as well on the mill quill and the lathe tail stock the same as the one you showed. Always works never any problems with any of the I-gaging stuff. Looking forward to the rest of the build. ATB regards from the UK
Gday, Igaging is getting mixed opinions so far in the comments, I have there scales on the other mill with the touch DRO and there been great, appreciate your watching mate, Cheers
I would class that as a win too. For sure.
And unfortunately I don't know a thing about DRO's, so I can't help you with that.
Gday Rustinox, im winning so far mate, Appreciate you watching, Cheers
Nice job Matty, it looks awesome as usual with your builds. Don't worry about the boo boo. One silly little slip does not detract from it at all mate. Cheers from England, Sam
Cheers mate
G'day Matty. Nice bit of machining & getting some nice close tolerances. Best of all the two halves fitted like a glove. Well done
So far so good Ted, I hope the rest of the build goes just as well, thanks for watching
Another good looking part coming along nicely. You do good work Matty. 👍🇳🇱
Thanks very much mate, Appreciate you watching, Cheers
Good job mate, looking forward to the next episode. When making jigs, fixtures and tooling I was using reciprocating grinders and a precision mill all with large magnetic chucks. Even with those mistakes were made, nothing huge just irritating ones. When you were tapping those holes I was clenching, natural reaction when taps have snapped on you, luckily we had an EDM company a few doors down which helped us out. Regards to you and the family 👍
Gday, I dont normally show tapping threads because its gone wrong plenty of times, the new UFS spiral taps are a game changer, they weren't cheap but you pay for quality, Thanks for watching mate, Cheers
Nice one Matty. Cheers Aaron
Thanks mate
You are still doing a good job keep it up mate ok
Thank mate
Matty, forgive my ignorance here please, but if you needed 5 holes for the gib, why didn’t you just put the gib in the first side? Or wouldn’t it fit?
Gday, the way its designed the gib can only go on one side, this will become clearer as the build goes on mate, Thanks for watching
great stuff.. can't wait for the next 17 episodes..
Hopefully not 17 more episodes mate, Appreciate you watching, Cheers
Very nice indeed. Greetings from Brisbane.
Thanks very much mate, Cheers
Gday Matty the project looks pretty good so far, some wild looking setups that's the bit I love using the gear you have to do what you need to get a procedure done and then saying " well at least that worked " at the end. I fitted a cheap no brand quill DRO to my mill when I first got it and in a very short amount of time it seized and would no longer slide. I have an Iguaging digital indicator it's bulky and needs a bit of room to use but the electronics seem to be fine I may look at one of their quill DRO's as well. Always look forward to Thursday's video at Matty's workshop cheers mate.
Gday, working with what's on hand does keep it interesting, I have Igaging scales on the other mill with the touchDRO setup and there been good, I haven't heard much about the quill unit though, Appreciate you watching mate, Cheers
Making great progress. Enjoying the series.
Thanks Greg, appreciate you watching
Hi Matty, it is looking really nice. I am looking forward to the next segment. Not boo boos - signature features - LOL. Regards, Dave
Gday Dave, so far its looking ok, I've definitely singed this build a couple of times now mate, Thanks for watching, Cheers
A joy to watch Matty,
Thanks mate
your eye for tolerances "by eye" is something not teachable to anyone,Matty - the build is comming along nicley, will wait whit anticipation for the next part - Well done mate!
Gday, if I was better at maths there would be less done by eye, Appreciate you watching mate, cheers
Nice work Matty.
I have an I Gauging setup on my Quill.
Bit hungry on batteries unlike the Mitutoyo on my BP clone I had.
Goes to sleep after a couple of minutes so you have to continually press the on button doing long duration jobs but keeps the setting, no big deal.
Easy to install and as you know just cut the scale to length, can't do that with a Mitutoyo.
Gday, It would be nice to have a Mitutoyo but the price tag is a bit large unfortunately, Thanks for letting me know about the Igaging setup mate, Cheers
Great job so far looks great as for your a DRO on your quill,,, i used a digital caliper for a mill i got for the grandkids to learn after 5 different ideas from 5 kids 😂😂 we got one installed works great reads bang on and only thing was that battery dieing maybe that why i give them that caliper just dont use a caliper that dont read good other then that your good to go" MATE" AS yous say there
Gday, I have thought about using a digital caliper, just not sure which way to go yet, Appreciate you watching mate, Cheers
Very easy just 2 small detachable bracket watch any time you can remove it,,, like I said 5 kids and still there working can't be that bad only if the tool cutters can last that long 😈
Matty if you blue your hole locations while referencing build notes then before spot drilling reference build notes you’ll minimize stuff ups.
Certainly would help mate
Holly shit old mate that is looking good . Great work
Thanks mate, Looking alright so far, Thanks for watching, cheers
Hello Matty, I sacrificed a digital caliper for mine. I have heard nothing negative about the iGaging though. 'Beats not having anything... Keep posting as we love you videos!
Gday, Igaging is getting mixed opinions in the comments so far mate, Appreciate you watching, Cheers
Looking very nice.
Thanks mate
Excellent job Matty, great video, keep'um coming..
Thanks mate, appreciate you watching as always, cheers
Great video. Waiting for the next and hopefully we will see it making some chips. thanks!
Gday, There still quite a bit to make yet but hopefully won't be to long until the first chips happen, Thanks for watching, Cheers
Well done mate 👍
Thanks mate
G'day Matty great video mate 👍
Thanks mate
Good work Matty
Thanks mate
Very nice ! Wow !!!
Thanks very much, Cheers
Great vieo Matty thank you
Cheers mate
Very nice Matty, I'm looking forward to getting my lathe setup and seeing what I can do with it...I have some precision bits of kit to make that I think will be a challenge and perhaps very interesting to build on camera. (just can't do anything until I get my workshop roof on...)
Gday, hopefully you get the roof sorted soon mate, appreciate you watching
@@MattysWorkshop thanks, I hope so too, its an uphill battle at the moment.
I appreciate honest people such as yourself, channel content is far more interesting when its presented in a personal way instead of trying to make "documentary" type video. I enjoy watching channels that make their own video's not the generic ones that UA-cam "likes"
Thanks for sharing things your way
Need advice on a tool I would go to the UA-cam channel of cutting edge engineering and ask Curtis. The guy is a master machinist he is highly knowledgeable and I know he could point you to the right tool for the right price. Dont think of your booboos as mistakes, just call them your signature...;)
You look like you really enjoy the new mill.
Gday Barry, The new mill is fantastic, don't think i'd like to build this on the old Cincinnati, Thanks for watching mate, Cheers
The Igage quill DRO is slow, eats batteries and hard to read.
I gave mine away and got a Mitutoyo.
Great content.
I’d love to have a mitutoyo but the funds aren’t there sadly mate, appreciate you watching
Lovely 👍👌 ATB Matty
Thanks mate, Talk soon
such prettiness, now I want one lol.
It’s looking alright so far mate, thanks for watching
Good to see you’re back making vlogs mate, hope you’re healthy again?
Gday, Back in full swing again finally, I've still got a few things to sort out on the health side of things but i'm a lot better then what I was mate, Thanks for watching, Cheers
👍
Thanks for watching mate, Cheers
That's nice, you setup the nets for the two kangaroo teams. Do the home roos usually win?
They have a fair crack at winning mate
Genuinely enjoying this.
Any possibility of a arrangement, between yourself and the designer to share / make available, the plans?
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers
Gday, At this stage when this build is completed theres a 99% chance the plans will be available, Cheers
I regretted buying igaging stuff. I had accuracy problems, very poor battery life and one scale the face fell off. You could get a mitutoyo caliper make some brackets and modify it to work. The 6" calipers sell in a high volume so they are reasonably priced. Watch out for fakes though. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the heads up mate, Cheers
Very nice precision job...Thank You...
Thanks very much mate, Cheers
I have the Igaging On the Quill of my Index 845 mill and it seems to work good been there more than a year and tests ive done for accuracy show an avereage of .0015 bananas accuracy pretty repeatable good enough for a quill i think .
Gday, I have Igaging scales on the Cincinnati mill with the touchDRO and there been pretty good so far, I just haven't heard to much about the quill setup, thanks for letting me know mate, Cheers
I have no experience with the Iguaging brand. I bought a Shahe for my quill Z axis. It's as accurate and repeatable as any of my other measuring setups. Including Mitutoyo.
Gday, Thanks for your feedback mate, Much appreciated, Cheers
Stick with Mitutoyo if you can👍🏻
Love to but the price is the problem there mate
been using the igage quill unit whiuch has been faultless for about a year. reliable to .01mm
Thanks very much for your feedback mate, Cheers
Was curious what you use for rust prevention in your shop. Do you have it conditioned, or just what? Thanks for sharing with us.
Gday, Rust isn't much of an issue here as a rule, I do use wd40 if theres a lot of moisture around, Thanks for watching, Cheers
coming along really good Matty just a question where do you get those brushes you use for the oil dabing as i have searched up here high and low and no goog i get by using the cheap artist brushes but if the part has any heat in it the buggees ment into a blob and then useless to any one anyway let's know if you can i just love your work am learning from you all the time but still make mistakes along the way can mostly get away with but some end up in the box of shame on me but thankfully only small ones so far nothing to costly keep up your excellent work and teaching of us others along the journey will be quite some time before i tackle something like this as i have no need for one of them big cheers mate
Gday, the brushes are called acid brushes, here’s an eBay link www.ebay.com.au/itm/314375510227?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=705-154756-20017-0&ssspo=6r1yf2hlqn-&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=mHCxRNqGSeO&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
I hope the link works, we all make mistakes but that’s a part of learning, It’s great to hear the videos are helpful mate, appreciate you watching, cheers
@@MattysWorkshop never miss one Matty and thanks for the link i'll check them out Cheers
Might have missed it, but what brand/ flavour is your drill chuck..I'm looking to upgrade mine so it holds drills and things without that slipping component in it😂
Gday, The drill chuck brand is Hardex, www.ebay.com.au/itm/164759314685?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=705-154756-20017-0&ssspo=uBP6rRnjQoO&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
so far im really impressed with the chuck mate, thanks for watching, Cheers
Thanks mate, I reckon if your impressed with it, it should be a good upgrade...I'll just have to talk the missus into letting me get a mill to go with it🤣
@@howardiknow1133 good luck mate
For the tolerances you shoot for that Igaging would piss you off, I have one on my mill, I don't like it plus the battery is always dead.
Thanks for the heads up mate, Much appreciated
Look at Mark Pressling he done a a video of installing igauging scales to his bridgeport and i ordered 2 for my little lathe and they have just arrived
I've been following Preso for a long time now mate, Thanks for watching. cheers
I,m in Perth WA if you need any help at times shout out mate good work
You truly live in the garden of Eden lol
Pretty nice living here mate
igauge is not good. they have poor service and not very accurate. tons of complaints from many people.
Thanks mate, I’m getting the feeling not to go Igauging, thanks for watching
Good on you mate! Interesting project! Looking forward to seeing how it work! I've found the Igauging read outs reasonable, they've given me good results! All the best!
Gday, it really is an interesting build and an enjoyable one to, Thanks for watching, Cheers
Excellent! Thanks for the look.
Thanks for watching mate
