The electric company started just as I was learning to read. It was a great help, it gave me a great head start and I've been an avid reader my whole life, thanks in no small part to the Electric Company as well as Sesame Street.
The Electric Company is an Edutainment Show that ran from October 25, 1971 until April 15, 1977 on PBS (the last two seasons reran until October 4, 1985) from Sesame Workshop.
The thing I loved about these shows is the diversity, because at this time many schools were coming out of segregation and kids were learning to coexist with kids of different races. This show and other PBS kids shows showed everyone that kids are the same regardless of race and it removed a lot of fear during a very difficult time for our country.
I never thought of this show in terms of frickin' race or diversity then. My brother and I loved Electric Company in the 70s because it was good, entertaining, fun, and you learned so much. As I grew older and saw how liberals would see everything in life through the lenses of race that I realized what a groundbreaking show this was. I mean had there not been such a diverse cast I don't think I would have learned nearly as much as I would have had they been all white, or all black, or all brown. Reading and grammar cannot be understood properly by children unless it is taught to them by teachers of multi racial, ethnic, and now sexual backgrounds. I think the current state of this Nation's public education system really bears this out. Of course I am using absurdity to illustrate a point. Point being- 2+2=4 and "what is a noun, verb, adjective or adverb?" has ZERO to do with race or sex. We need common sense -Electric Company type- programming for our kids and less what bathrooms are to be used. Our public ed system is a dumpster fire now.
Thank you EC cast and producers for creating such beautiful TV for young minds like mine and millions of others!
Watching that intro again blew me away. All these suppressed memories.
Clean shows like this helped me remember simple phonics when I was in elementary school.
Ahh the good old days😄

I watched Morgan Freeman on this show when I was a kid. Now I’m 55 and I watch him in Lioness. I been watching him all my life 😂
I love watching this when I was a kid, especially when he had the Spider-Man episodes. Also, the production in the intro is amazing.

Forgot how much prominence the distinctive voice of Morgan Freeman had in my early educational development.
I just realized that was Morgan Freeman. My mind is blown.
I watched the whole video and actually remembered the If and I Love You songs. 😊 I especially loved Rita, Hattie, and Morgan on The Electric Company.

If The Electric Company were out on DVD(all 780 episodes),they would be divided into six box sets Hopefully in the near future!
Whoever thought that Morgan Freeman would blow up the way he has after this?
He Blow Up? Is he ok?
I remember watching the show back in the early seventies when it came out in 71 I was 8 years old watch Mr I feel so old because I am old
It’s weird seeing so many people with good memories of this. These assholes have been threatening to shut off my power since 2018.
Here Sept 10 2024. Jimmy Fallon was also on The Electric Company before his start on SNL and his role in Taxi.
Yes I believe he was on the 2009 reboot
Peter!!!? 😃🤣🤣🤣🤣😁
3 young Morgan Freeman's? If only there were more than 1 him.
Frank sounds like Peter Griffin.
Oh yeah. That's what I was thinking!
3:57 Someone pointed out that the actor was Spaulding Gray (1941-2004).
I had wondered for the longest time who Funny Guy was -- thank you!
Who pointed it out?
Does anyone know the name of the man in the "Funny Guy" sketch?
Not Tim Conway
If is a conditional conjunction.
