  • Whole Lotta Love is a unique Led Zeppelin live experience, and the August 4, 1979 Knebworth performance is no exception. We also give our first-time reaction to In the Evening live from the same concert. It is our first time hearing and watching these!
Neither of us have seen or heard these performances before. We are re-experiencing classic rock music, an album at a time, with fresh perspectives and active ears, so that Dev can learn and appreciate this music more, and so that Mike can relive his childhood.
    00:00 - Intro / Page solo

In case you guys were not aware of it....when Jimmy plays the guitar during Whole Lotta Love, the riff he's playing is actually the original riff's notes, played backwards.

You'll Never Walk Alone is a song from the musical "Carousel". It used to be sung as a song of support at many football games. It's being sung a s song of support for the band who had been away from the UK for four years. I was in that crowd and to hear 200,000 people singing that was something else. Plant came back on and was almost in tears because the band had no idea how they would be received after such a long absence, especially since punk had taken over in their absence. Watch the scene in the movie Carousel and you'll understand the context a bit better. It was a hell of a show that hot summer day in 1979.

They were marvelous!! See where Eddie Van Halen got his tapping? What other band can IMPROVISE LIKE THAT???? NONE!!!

Van Halen's first album came out about a year-and-a-half before this concert, and Eddie had already been tapping for years before that. Eddie did state he was inspired by Page after seeing "Heartbreaker" performed live. But Page was only using one hand to do a bunch of hammer-ons and pull-offs. Eddie wondered why you couldn't use both hands to do it. And so he did.

Eddie actually said he got it from Jimmy. Possibly from wll tsrts which came out in 76

      Improv and tapping....
It was "the Cream" who were best known for improv. Ginger Baker and Bruce were very critical of Zeppelin's improv. They felt it was beneath them; more gimmick than musicianship (and when Page was wasted...I'd agree). Deep Purple was said to have refined improv in the shadow of Cream, and the Allman Brothers perfected it. Of course, there were those who took it to another level....prog rockers Yes, Genesis, and then Rush. Zeppelin were certainly great at jamming and extending songs, but I'm not sure they were the best.
As for tapping....Page did both one hand and two hand tapping while he was with the Yardbirds, just like he used the bow with them. Page wasn't the only tapper. Hendrix and Beck did as well. But before EVH, no one -- that I'm aware of -- made it part of their playing style.
      Anyhow.....

Eddie was copying Chet Atkins actually. He was 2 hand tapping way back in the 50's. Before Ed was born. VH took it further but Chet was the 1st player I ever noticed doing it.

Yeah we sang “ You’ll Never Walk Alone” as a way of saying we’re still with you, despite everything. Mike is correct about it being the fan anthem for Liverpool Football Club in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿.Never heard it sung by 150,000 people though.

Deb might be interested in knowing that Page worked on the Death Wish 2 soundtrack, and Page used his bow and guitar for effects on that movie.

The laser show during the guitar/violin bow prelude to “ In The Evening” looked pretty awesome from the crowd ( have I ever mentioned that I was there?). Unfortunately not so great when they tried to film it using the 1979 quality video recorders. If it had produced footage that met Jimmy’s quality control thresholds then it would have been included on the official DVD. It’s a shame because the entire section took the equivalent item from Earls Court 1975 and added more dimensions to it. Unforgettable.

Liverpool FC ,Glasgow Celtic, Borussia Dortmund and others sing You'll Never Walk Alone 😉 LFC sang it from 1963 when Anfield stadium played the Top 10 songs of the time and Liverpool's own Gerry Marsden's rendition knocked The Beatles off #1 spot..Celtic and Liverpool both being celtic heritage sing it like a hymm..When in unison, sung from the heart,it is very powerful and moving. ua-cam.com/video/j72tBjGNlxI/v-deo.htmlsi=l8g4AYEmeMLB01da ua-cam.com/video/NzJqv_Oj_W0/v-deo.htmlsi=MASh8fDhWQWSZ0es Well done Knebworth for singing it for Led Zeppelin as a 'Thankyou' Nothing beats organic way a song just fills the air from a large crowd beit football or a concert..Tis rather more stereotyped these days..One love from Liverpool and a huge Zep fan(my ol' man hitchhiked to Earls Court for 1972 shows 😊
