    One of my favorite absolutely _tiny_ details in this song is one of Cassie's last lines, "You've got Pages full of questions but I've left my lot behind." I like it so much because it's a very clever double, both having pages full of questions (since you're in-universe taking a census of the town's residents), but also Pages full of questions, since the ones who are in charge of the Ministry are the Masters (the big cloaked dudes), one of whom you meet in the game is Mr. Pages, with that capital P. Brilliant.

      There are so many tiny details everywhere. My favorite detail is in the fourth section with Mr Pages where eyes appear behind him. The eyes blink from bottom up to show they're bats hanging upside down. I'd put money on blinking being added just to show orientation.

    I don't know if anyone else has pointed this out, but my personal favorite tidbit in this song is with the bit of "hunger does a number down in london, watch you'll get a darker taste instead." it's an incredibly subtle reference to a particular little game mechanic known as being Unaccountably Peckish. basically, it's a very coy reference to cannibalism! idk how many people caught that one tbh, but it made me chuckle when i first heard it

    I adore this piece so much! As someone who has been playing Fallen London for ~8 years now this was an amazing treat. Stupes managed to fit so many little nods to the games in the song but still made it accessible to people who never heard of it.
    My favorite line is probably "The other people *at* my station may not share my fascination" from Byron. In universe Hell is a real place you can go to via train (with a lot of work).
    Also, the last character "Mr. Pages" is the only character from the FL universe! Everyone else is an OC. The ingame one is even more incomprehensible.
    Also excellent work spotting the common theme of love! It is the driving force of pretty much all conflicts in the Fallen London universe, including the city's fall.

    From my hazy understanding of the Fallen London universe, one of the peculiar aspects of the Neath is that death works very differently than on the surface, in that death by violence is seldom permanent, and death by natural causes is gradual rather than sudden, and lifespans are much longer. A person who dies retains their consciousness and continues as normal, but their body slowly decays until they become a tomb-colonist, where they travel away from London to live in cites of the dead.

    • @zacharysimmons4115
      @zacharysimmons4115 Рік тому +27

      It's more of a resurrection sort of thing. When you die of unnatural causes (murder, choking, etc.), you eventually just kind of...wake up a few days later with your injuries healed. Though the body does decay in the interim and scars still form, meaning that repeated returns from the Boatman tends to result in a person becoming too unpleasantly marred to remain in polite society. Thus, the creation of the tomb colonies. Lifespans are still about the same as well, but the Neath is also host to a lot of life-extending materials that can often be hard to avoid interacting with.

      For more fun: The symbols during Byron's verse? They have meanings.
      His lapel pin is 'The Improbable Collusion of Two Unrelated Perils'.
      Irritatingly, most of the others I either can't quite make out or don't appear to Correspond to as-of-yet known symbols (a bit saddened that 'The Sensation of Having Carried Out a Painstaking Task for No Particular Reason' wasn't one I could make out), but Byron's not kidding about speaking them possibly setting the place aflame - that particular language is known for its high flammability.

    Byron Brimstone may "set the place aflame" with his name because his name may naturally be one of the Correspondence, the language of the stars that does typically set things on fire. A few of the correspondence sigils are tied against the bottles that appears in his normal human verses! Which have a good chance to be bottled human souls. I tend to read this 29:08 ”Either way you’ll be beneath” as another innuendo but maybe I’m over reading it. Another fun, visual effect is at Brimstone’s verse where a bottle gets materialized in the background as soon as the “bottled up feelings” get mentioned.
    I must say, how special it feels to have a character like Cassie portrayed in a mainstream media without them seeming like a circus freak. From a personal experience I can say that coming out as anything else than cis has been a heck of a lot more terrifying than coming out as “simply” pan. I tip my nonexistent hat to Stupes for this.
    I thoroughly enjoyed your commentary. It’s my second time watching this, as I tend to watch your reactions multiple times. I would definitely not have caught everything without it.

    • @headphoneheadache7667

      Tbh, the character reads more like someone with plurality for me.
      Having 2 identities inside that can switch from the front to back seat (which is how it is often explained to me. Two identities in one body as a 2 people in one car), that's how I read the lines.
      With "Clyde can take the back seat, Cassie's turn to ride" , "the other person is residing deep inside"
      "Who gets to say on any day who will rein" and wear trousers or not. (Clyde generally being a male name, so wearing trousers and Cassie is generally considered female, so dress) and why it's better to de-gentrify, it might be a punt de-gent-rifiy or d-gender-fry. So Cassie/Clyde can be whoever they wants to be as it doesn't matter to others anymore who they is.

    • @anamaleth_ad
      @anamaleth_ad Рік тому +2

      @@headphoneheadache7667 also a great way to interpret that part!
      I personally figured that because stupes is genderfluid themselves, and because cassie is the first femme presenting character they've played on their channel, there's a decent chance that part was meant to read as her being trans/genderfluid - but I can definitely see the plural system interpretation as well!

  • @thesaltdragon

    I personally love this song so much, especially the layout. The first verse, Bob's, explains more of the world and what happened to get them down in the Neath. Cassie's, by contrast, is all about the people of the Neath. It shows, using her as an example, that people are changing down here, for better or worse. It explains the character growth of the people as they get used to their new life, which is why I find Cassie's verse so appealing. Byron's verse is then used to talk about how weird the situation is, and to bring our attention to the more Lovecraftian details about the world. Every mini song has it's purpose, even the short bit when the Masters show up is important. It gives us a peak behind the curtain as to who's in charge of all this, and it shows that they are strangely fascinated with the new arrivals to their cavern. All in all, everything is there for a reason, and it tells about the situation their in so well that despite never hearing about Fallen London prior to this game, I knew all the basics when I began to look into the game on my own. Phenomenal.
    Edit: Also I love when Cassie offers you a drink in the middle of Byron's verse. It's such a small detail, but it indicates that you are visibily uncomfortable with this situation and Cassie is trying to offer you an out. Again, everything is there for a purpose!

    I had to do a double take when I saw Stupes playing a feminine character for the first time and hopefully won't be the last.
    And yeah I can get you misunderstanding something in it on first listening as it took me several repeats before I fully got it all because there's just so much to take in both visually and audibly at once. Not that it's a bad thing, like with most of Stupes' songs, such writing is always good as it means I end up spotting something I didn't the first several times I listened to it. 😆

    The things in the robes were the Masters of the Echo Bazaar, the entities that made a deal with Queen Victoria that led to London becoming Fallen London in exchange for saving Albert from death. The one with the idiosyntaxic way of speaking is Mr. Pages, and don't feel bad about their verse being odd. Fallen London's setting is an onion of world-building and occult secrets, and that verse doesn't make much sense unless you're already familiar with ThE LoRe. Without spoiling too much for the folks who want to play the games and figure out the mysteries themselves (folks who are interested in spoilers can google the lore wiki), I'll just say that the Masters Of The Bazaar and the Bazaar itself have their own agendas that are intimately connected with matters of Love, and leave it at that.

    For Mr. Pages (spoopy little hooded boy towards the end), in the game would make up words by merging them which is what they did in the song.
    Also with Byron brimestones line (his name is basically a wordplay on fire and brimstone) "Death is but a wheel but within a wheel spins ever round" references that death in the underneath (like harry teller at the end) is rarely pemenant unless your dismembered or (any other obviously 100% lethal way to die), else all wounds will heal in time. If somebody who died in the underneath returns to the surface they will basically die when they see the sun.

    (example: Serendestiny= Serendipity, the concept of having something happen by accident, in an unplanned manner ; and Destiny, the concept that specific things _will_ happen, no matter what. Or Fathometry= Fathoming being the measure of depths, both underwater or in concepts; and metry the measure in general, unless I'm missing something)

      Cassie has what sounds like a really miserable marriage in her Surface past, so it makes a lot of sense that she's soured on the idea.
      The reason everyone's telling you about their opinions on love is because you've asked- the census *specifically* has you asking people if they're "enamourificated or impassionated". (Mr Pages wrote the questions.)

Coincidently I hadn't heard of fallen london til the day stupes video released cause seeking mr eaten's name came up in a top ten video I happened to watch that day. The more I listen to this song the more I appreciate all the lines "pulls a damned sight more than pints" is a cracker. Cassie's section is a standout lots of amazing lines. "either way you'll be beneath" yes what you said but also you might just be lucky enough to be beneath cassie as well ;) Oh oh the riddle of the sphinx line just clicked for me :D I love the change to the most classy sounding piano for our resident gentledevil I mean man. Love the fiery sigils that appear during the line about telling you his name would set the place aflame making it obvious that it would in fact be more than metaphorical if he told you his real name and the little bit where he suddenly teleports to the bar is amazing. my skinsuit is ichy can relate ian it's quite hot over here and cause it's the uk it's also as humid as a defrosting hell my body itches everywhere :) souls are a commodity in the fallen london game and they just so happen to be stored in bottles. also mister byron brimstone made me google a few words that where not in my lexicon. (to court someone is an old timey way of saying picking up someone)
    Maybe said murderer is being controlled/motivated to kill by this external entity in the song, or maybe the external entity takes on a human form and is the murderer themselves. Now I want to play the game XD
