Basically the lore behind this game is that London fell through the surface of the earth. After the death of Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, she desperately seeks any way to bring him back In her desperation, she makes a deal with some demons to bring back Albert using dark magic, however it came at a horrible price. The citizens of London paid for the deal Victoria made by being permanently imprisoned under the ground (just FYI this is just fictional lol)
@@TylerBuenoMusic I will now tell you a very partial bit of lore about those who the deal was made too and why The Final verse was by a master of the bazaar, Mr. Pages. The masters are of a batlike race called curators that effectively serve as messengers for the judgements, which are stars and gods and which enforce laws of reality. The masters are renegades, serving the bazaar (which is like a space crab and was in love with the sun) and their goal is to collect love stories to present an argument to the judgements. They are what brought London underground, they are very much NOT demons or connected to hell. London is the 5th of (eventually) 7 cities to be taken underground.
@@TylerBuenoMusic, she makes a "deal with the devil", but not with devils or demons. In-setting, this would be like making a deal with angels doing an archangel's bidding. It just so happens that the angels are giant bipedal bats in cloaks and the archangel is a giant space crab. And God is the Sun. The only reason this distinction matters is that devils are real in this setting and they're not the ones who made the deal.
@TylerBuenoMusic i posted before the end. Sorry, i see u did realize. And ya, im surprised stupes went for a clean shave. that's dedication. But when do they ever do anything half way its either balls to the wall or nothing at all, lol
I'm super late to this conversation, but Stupes didn't actually shave for this; he uses a filter. If you watch very closely, the filter slips at one point, and you can see his mustache. :D It's very well done though!

@@BasedLiz That’s incorrect. Stupes did shave for Cassie. They specifically said so “To answer your question, yes, that is me playing Cassie! She was filmed last so I was able to shave for her. ;)” - Stupes, under WHAT IT DO DAVE’s reaction video
There's definitely a paranormal aspect to how London actually came down without a giant hole above. Especially since it's the fifth such city from across the world to fall and they all end up in the same spot (the later ones crushing the previous). In this universe the suns are gods whose light enforces the laws of physical reality. Down in the Neath, these laws are more like suggestions.
It may not have been a stupes original, but like you read, basically every character was created by stupes and is not in any of the games, so its it own thing but set in the same universe
That's a great way to look at it. What I meant was something 100 percent original from their head. No sponsorship. No pre-made world. But you are right the characters were original. So that is something!
Glad to see a reactor actually look at the full description! I saw another one read the description, looking specifically for who played Cassie, and still completely missed that it was Stupes themself.
Ya know as the characters go by, the references become more and more obscure. In Bob's verse there's something about Portobellows which refers to mushroom wine, Cassie has tentacles referring to the Rubbery Men and then there's Byron whose over heart pin and "buzz" refer to what Devils are in FL.
Honesty stups adds so much of their own personality and story that an original would probably not sound too different. Also they have made original songs. There's the board game song, the matter of facts song, the British summer time song, and others
Having watched some of your musical stuff, I had a feeling you would probably really like this. And Fallen London is an interesting universe. Fallen London itself is a free text based game (though you do have to pay if you want to experience special stories, or speed up time). Mask of the Rose really isn't bad for an introduction, though I wish they had put in some more of the weirdness. Sunless Sea and Sunless Skies are in here, and as you guess, London is now underground (taken by a plague of bats). There are a variety of things at play like Occult (magicians, devils, etc.), Call of Cthulu (I'm sure you noticed the tentacle), romance, etc. The Masters were the ones who stole London (and this isn't the first city they did that to), and they have a fixation on love. And yeah, death is a bit more...flexible...on someone coming back in the Neath. There are a lot of other details, but I won't bore you further :)
@@TylerBuenoMusic One way to look at the whole story is that someone at Failbetter games decided to take the basic plot of a 1950s B movie and say "but what if we treated it seriously?". The Masters are literally alien space bats who came to Earth to study love, but everything is far more complicated than that simple explanation would imply.
I recommend playing Sunless Sea, if you’re not used to VNs, as Sunless Sea is a roguelike with more gameplay. This might just be because I want to play Masque of the Rose first myself, first, and also see the reactions of people unfamiliar with the setting experiencing it for the first time
Technically not sure if what stups did would be considered crossdressing since theyre genderfluid i heard. Kinda like calling a transwoman a crossdresser in my mind.
That's a great point. If they identify as both, they they wouldn't be cross dressing.. they would just be themselves. But as I've never seen Stups in atire like this before, my mind sees it as drag. If I read right, this was their first time getting to do something like this.
I, and countless others were taken aback by how stupes just casually flexed the full weight of their They/them pronouns in this amazing work. I could genuinely see this performed as a short musical.
