    I’ve watched a number of other videos explaining how to install and wire a dashcam in my Gen 3 Prius. They all showed running the cable to the passenger’s side of the car and then over to the cigarette lighter socket in the middle under the console. For some reason, that socket on my car doesn’t work and I haven’t had the time to track down the problem. So, I’d been putting off the installation. Finally, I realized that, if I’m going to drive for Uber, I really need to get this cam installed. So, I came back to UA-cam and that’s when I found your video. Coincidentally, I also had chosen the exact same Vantrue cam as you did. I thank you for recording and posting this video. You’ve solved at least two problems for me - running the cable to the driver’s side and also, not having to worry about getting the cigarette socket working.
    BTW, if that pretty little red-haired girl is your wife, I think you’re a fortunate man. She’s absolutely adorable!

    This video is EXACTLY what I needed. I drive a Prius also and I drive for Lyft. Just bought the same camera and was wondering how how it was to hard wire it, thank you.
    I've had two questionable incidents happen to me while driving for lyft, one concerning a traffic ticket and another with an out of control passenger who was high as a kite. I finally broke down and bought this camera and I'm hoping to have it in before New Years.
    Thanks again !

      Thanks for the support! I thought it was going to be a lot harder than it really was. The only hard part was contorting my body to put the cord up in the headliner. The whole process, even setting up to film it couldn't have been more than 30 minutes.

      @Brockton Hankins I agree with that. For the purpose of safety and evidence it does a fantastic job. There are settings on the camera to change exposure and lighting, etc but I haven't messed with it.

    I installed a Nextbase 522 but needed a Prius example. The biggest pain was running the rear camera cable. Even with included bike tool it was a struggle getting around the tight seam with the roof.

      Yeah above the headliner is not a walk in the park! I just posted the N4 walkthrough a few days ago for the hardwire including the rear camera. Check it out and let me know if you did it the same way. I’m curious how others do it

  • @RaquibBahar

    Hi
    I use ur instructions to hardware the dash cam and I have a 2012 prius. It is working well. Thanks
    Unfortunately my iPhone was connected to the car charger while I was harwiring the cam. About 20 min later my phone just went black and the screen doesn't come on. So I guess it was a short circuit.
    So guys if ur hardwiring, make sure u don't have anything connected to the cigarette lighter.

    • @TroveLessTraveled_
      @TroveLessTraveled_  5 років тому +1

      Oh my goodness! Now I have short circuited the cigarette lighter in a different Prius from having 2 phones and a laptop charging off of it, but it did not damage my phone. This was before I ever tried to hardwire anything into it. Maybe it's just the iPhone battery that was messed up and not the entire phone?

    • @rhinoskin7550
      @rhinoskin7550 3 роки тому +2

      Anything powered from the vehicles battery while it’s not running will kill the battery. Usually people have to install a secondary battery for the camera.

    I have the same car, different camera. I have a mechanic wiring it to the fuse box, it has a parking mode so two wires instead of one.
    My biggest concern is mixing up the positive and negative. How did you determine where the positive and negative was in the fuse box and on the connector?

    Fantastic Great video very in depth however.
    Would it not be better to piggy bank off an ignition live fuse, rather than constant power. This is so the dash cam only comes on when the car is in power/ready mode.
    This will help not to drain the battery when car is not in use i.e. parked for a week. if it is using constant power it will just be draining the battery for nothing, in worst case it may drain the battery so much when parked and then not able to start the car, as the dash is is always on. i always try to find a ignition live source.

      I want it to be hardwired so it can record anytime there is motion around the car. This way it can record if someone backs into your car or if there is any other damage that occurs where you'd need footage for insurance purposes or the police. As a side note to that, you never have to remember to plug it in the cigarette lighter when you get in the car it's just always ready.

  • @mike73ng
    @mike73ng 3 роки тому +7

    Two things. It matters which way you plug in the “add a fuse”. One side of a fuse socket is power. The other side is to the device. You need to plug in the pig tail so that the power goes THROUGH the fuse.
    Second. The Hard wire kit has a box on it that is to detect low voltage and cut power so you won’t run down your battery. You could just cut the provided 12v plug but you would lose that feature.

    • @TroveLessTraveled_

    I tucked the top part along the window into the headliner too. Also, around the door seal in my 2012 Camry there is a rubbery weatherstripping. Not the foamy black weatherstripping. It’s the same color as interior and perfect for running cables. I almost think it was designed to tuck away cables. I used a plastic bike tire tool to help guide the cable. I’ve now got an excellent install job and kept the cables away from the side airbag. Don’t want the cables causing a malfunction should the airbags deploy. That could be deadly. Could have used more video of the door portion of the install process. Overall, loved the video and how it gave me the confidence to tackle this. Thank you!

      @@TroveLessTraveled_ I received my N4 yesterday with optional GPS docking base and 256Gb card.
      The hard-wiring I'm still thinking about. I lack motivation at this point. Tomorrow morning - hopefully weather permitting - I'll make a start from rear to front. I believe by starting from the rear, it'll motivate me to eventually tackle the hard wiring aspect; which I'm dreading.
      It is my first dashcam. I'd been putting off for some time because of boxes till now not being adequately ticked on specs. and price point (at £300+ it is still a considerable outlay for me).
      I also feel that for the number of weekly incidence/near misses I've been experiencing during my commutes, that I'm on borrowed time so been compelled to act. Too many mindless drivers around; possibly high on drugs with no insurance. 😵
      Cyclists and motorised scooter riders who may hop off pavements on to roads without looking, nor hand signaling. Motorcyclists who cut you up in traffic. Car drivers who don't seem to know what side of the road they're meant to be on and will exit blind spots with no indication and without any hesitation. Enough is enough.

      I don't know if Best Buy stocks them. You can get them on eBay or Amazon, but I did not check any storefronts. It only uses 5 volts. I suppose if you left it running for a month without driving your car it's possible? I wouldn't recommend it on a car you were storing as a non op, but for a daily driver you'd never have a problem

    Hello,
    I have the same cam with the same hardwire kit but a lot of reviews are stating that it will drain the battery. Because of that I only hardwired it so it turns on when my car turns on.
    Now that you've had the camera for awhile do you have any battery issues being always on?
    Thanks!

    • @TroveLessTraveled_
      @TroveLessTraveled_  5 років тому +1

      Interesting you say that. I think I have seen issues on one of my cars with battery drainage. I think best thing you can do is take the off camera when you’re home. I definitely want it to store video if I’m parked and get hit but when I’m home I don’t need to drain the battery

      I believe there are metal threads the screw touches. If there wasn’t metal in there it wouldn’t complete the circuit... so it works.
