    If you look closely at the N4 hardwire kit, there's a slide switch for the under-voltage protection. To the left is marked 12V/24V, to the right is 11.6V/23.2V. Perhaps this is the answer to the criticism that a cutoff of 11.6V is too low? I've read several places that a battery at 11.6 is deep-discharged at best, dead at worst. Does anyone know for sure whether this slide switch is in fact an adjustment of the cutoff voltage?

      Great question! I personally used an N2 Pro kit so I don’t have an answer but I’ll pin this.

    • @davidyon9031
      @davidyon9031 2 роки тому

      Just installed the entire kit today (N4 + GPS Mount + N4 Hardwire kit). The Hardwire Kit’s manual does in fact state that the switch adjusts the under voltage threshold. That said, when I hooked it up to my bench power supply I was having trouble getting the unit to do the cutoff. Literally was able to have the N4 powered at 9V on the input. This was something of an artificial test so there may be other factors I’m not accounting for. I did verify that when fully operational, the N4 draws about 300mA, and when powered down, it draws about 65mA. This is enough of a mystery that I may help my son do a YT video as he needs content for the channel he’s about to launch. If anyone has any more hard datapoints I’m sure it would be helpful not only to me, but others who are confused by this seemingly simple issue.

      @@easilyoffended7772 I honestly don't know. I'm dumbfounded that between two hard-wire kits with cutoff voltages, I could not get either of them to shut down even at ridiculously low voltages. I went ahead and wired a cutout switch into my install, just to be able to easily disable it. Got a decent switch from Amazon that popped into a spare slot on the dash and blends in pretty well with the factory switches. I also have a cig-lighter voltage readout, which so far has been showing the battery at ok levels.

    To clear up confusion among many, NO it does not run continuously when parked. You put it in "parked" mode & it only powers the camera on when it detects motion or collision. Also, the hardwire kit has a low voltage protection to shut the unit down when the power get too low.

    01:33, Vantrue hardwire kit resolves that issue with its integrated battery power monitoring feature. It automatically ceases power draw once a low voltage threshold is reached, to maintain adequate cranking power (how effective it is at meeting its claim, I don't know).:

    That said, a vehicle's alarm system will eventually drain the battery if it is left sitting for too long, not in use. Vehicles in general don't like sitting for extended periods for all sorts of other reasons besides.

    Hi Eric, regarding the cam draining your battery. I have had the N2 Pro hard wired for a year now and have never turned my cam off and never had a problem. The hard wire kit has protection built in so if the voltage of your car battery drops to 11.6V or 23.5V the regulator will cut off the power to the cam leaving you with enough power to start your car so this won't drain your battery. I keep my cam on even when parked at home which allowed me to capture the license plate numbers of 2 vehicles that turned around in my driveway in the middle of the night after they attempted to break into my neighbors house which helped the police to catch the suspects. Also the Vantrue N2 Pro has 1.5 amp output on the hard wire kit whereas the N4 hard wire kit has 2 amp output (more cameras need more power). If the power supply has less amps than what is required the charger will fail to charge or charge slowly as it can’t get enough current (or power) to charge the capacitor so I'm thinking this maybe why you may have had a problem with your battery draining.

  • @savagei6130

      Yes! It will definitely drain the battery. How could it not? The newer hardwire kit they offer has a shut down mechanism when the battery gets low. Not sure what the long term effects of that are on the battery. I always take it out when I return home or arrive at work. It’s nice to leave it running though if I head into the store for 30 minutes to an hour just in case something happens though.

    Thanks for the great video. Just wanted to point out that you warned about the dash cam potentially draining your battery if hardwired and recommended carrying a battery booster (which I think is a good idea regardless). But if you look at the hardwire kit sold by Vantrue it states one of its features is "Low voltage protection"
    (i.e. it has a smart low voltage protection system that will automatically shut off the power to your dash cam when the battery voltage drops to 11.6V or 22.8V thus preventing it draining the battery). I think in the video you said you chose not to purchase that new hardwire kit because you already had one for the previous model. The card is a intenso hc u1 32gb card. Could it be that the card is to slow for the cam or broken after formating it? Or could the sd-card-slot be broken? Please help me! Not a bad job of installing, just a couple of critiques. 1st, when you inserted the fuse tap, you didn't verify which direction to plug the tap. The simplest way is to remove the 5 amp fuse that came with the tap and verify that the dash cam has lost power. If you don't loose power to the cam, that means you need to unplug the tap, flip it and plug it in the other way and retest. It's a fire hazard if done wrong. 2nd, when you ran the rear cam wire, you should have used the factory gromet to run the wire inside of for a cleaner install, especially since the panel exposing access to it popped off.

    Thank you, your video and information was extremely helpful and I purchase both the unit and gps adapter. I also purchased the charging unit, all through Amazon. It all makes sense. I'm retired and driving for Uber and already have a front and rear camera but needed the 3 way set up. I came here because of recommendations from other Uber drivers and you made a very good impression of the products I purchase. I'll pay the extra and have an audio sound company who installed my other camera do the install on this one. Hey, maybe I'll get lucky and some of the wiring will be similar. Again, thank you.

    When i hardwired my N4 besides just wiring it to an always on fuse .... i used another pigtail to also wire it to an acsessory fuse ....withba switch between both so normally leave it on acsessory then if im out and going to park somewhere you just flip the switch up and boom ur in parking mode ...then you get home and switch back to accsessorie .
    If you wanna do it get a single pole double throw rocker switch ..... run the red wire from the hardwire kit to the center post of the switch ... then run a wire from one of the other poles up to the fuse box and into an always on fuse .... then run another wire from the last pole on the switch to an acsessory fuse .... then the black wire from the kit to a bolt lile normal

    Great video, walkthrough, and detailed explanation... there are a bunch of videos that show the angles/views/footage/etc but loved the walkthrough.
    I don't chime in on chat forums but I would like to add a couple things. For the average person this setup is perfect, however on your back panel area when the trim piece came off, you can actually run your cable through the rubber "hose" down below to keep it protected from the elements. Most importantly, on the front (and along the top side area) when running the cables, especially the rear cable... be mindful that the SRS and airbags are running along the pillars. You can run the cable underneath them, and a few ways to avoid issues but keep in mind that you likely don't want any cables directly in the way of the airbags.
    Keep up the great videos, thank you so much!!!

    This camera is a good deal, off course it’s 3 channel and video quality wise its really good. However, let me educate everyone here. The front cam has only 155 degrees angle. Now this angle is not enough to record a full size video in the front. You are missing a big portion on the right side and a big portion on the left side. Your fenders are not fully covered. Even the dash, if you see in the video is not fully in the frame. I would rate this cam 7/10 for that. We need something which had at least 170 Degrees in the front. Here the thing, the more you complicate things the less features you get.

    • @TroveLessTraveled_
      @TroveLessTraveled_  4 роки тому +1

      I mean, you may be right, there are other cameras that have 170 degree viewing angle, but until there is a camera that offers the features this camera does, it will be the top dog for awhile. It's user friendly and has every feature except wifi/bluetooth. But, you're right there is always room for improvement!

      California Driver Well thats my opinion about the Dashcam. Secondly, it comes with the USB-C power connector which is great. However, its hard to find a USB-C to Mini. I am glad that you found it. Its not even on Amazon nor anywhere else. So I ordered a new Vantrue hardwire with USB-C to Mini from Amazon and again spent $22. The hardwire I have is not good for it because thats a mini, easy to find and 99.9% Dashcams uses it. In my opinion, they should send it with the Dashcam. They don’t do that, because then who will buy their hardwire.

    2 Qs: 1- When you change the up/down angle of the interior cabin camera, does it change the angle of the dash camera or are they on independent swivels? 2- Could you run the rear camera wire down through the rubber housing that goes down the middle of the rear hatch door? I assume there are other wires & hoses to rear wiper in there.

    • @TroveLessTraveled_
      @TroveLessTraveled_  4 роки тому +1

      To answer your first question, there is a separate pivot for the interior cabin and a ball joint for the front-facing camera so all three are adjustable. The second question, honestly I just felt the way I did it was the easiest way to recess as much wiring as possible. Definitely not the easiest to install, but I would not change a thing in the way I installed this. There are definitely other ways to do it that are just as effective for getting the camera up and running though. Hope that helps!

      So, regardless of what Vantrue says, the camera is always running if it is hardwired. There are a few solutions and some 3rd party options, but my rule of thumb: if I'm parked at work or home I unplug it, if I'm parked somewhere else I let it run. That will save you from a dead battery.

    • @vandrews22

      I can only answer the 1st part to your question. Yes there is always power flowing through the OBD port because I currently have the OWL DASHCAM and it’s connected to the OBD port, so even when the car is off it’s still connected. The reason I’m currently watching this video is because OWL is becoming to pricey now. After paying $350 for the dash cam they had a month to month payment plan because it uses LTE service and all the recording go directly to the cloud and you can view the footage from an app on your phone. July 2020 that just passed OWL changed their LTE plan to a yearly plan of $227 a year. I’m like really ??? So that’s why I’m looking to buy a vantrue N4 where I make one solid purchase and I don’t have to pay anything for the years to come

      @@TroveLessTraveled_ FYI the hard wire kit has a smart low voltage protection system that will automatically shut off the power to your dash cam when the battery voltage drops to 11.6V or 22.8V, thus preventing it draining the battery. I have left my camera plugged in 24 hours a day for a year now and have never had my battery drained. It defeats the purpose of having a parking monitor when you are unplugging the cam. I also noticed the N2 Pro hard wire mount puts out 1.5 amps to the cam where the n4 hard wire kit puts out 2 amps to the cam. Since you are using the N2 Pro hard wire kit (1.5 amps) with an adapter maybe that is why your battery died? The power supply isn't providing enough power to fully charge the capacitor? I know if I get the N4 I will be buying the N4 hard wire kit and remove my existing N2 Pro hard wire kit due to the amp difference. Just a thought.

If it’s not hardwired are you able to enable park mode and use a cheaper battery pack made for phones and plug it into the cam. The battery pack although will be a lower mah it should last a while since it’s not continuously powering the cam only when motion occurs.

    Doesn't the Hardwire Kit measure the voltage of your battery and stop the connection to the dashcam if it's too low?

    If it records a violation when the vehicle is parked does it give you an audio or visual warning to review what it recorded?

    Notice the new mount is too tight to remove the camera? The n2 was better.

      I haven’t noticed. I haven’t taken the camera out I just unplug from the top every night when I come home. Are you finding it difficult to pull the camera off entirely?

      @@TroveLessTraveled_ good point I can take the whole mount off entirely. Yes if you notice the button is smaller to eject it. I live in San Diego and that cam will go bye bye if I leave it on the street.
