  • You guys finally get the video you've most collectively requested. Sorry it took so long. HERE IT IS! I go through EVERYTHING regarding my ownership experience with my particular Genesis 5.0. I go through costs, all the maintenance Ive done, I go through things I LOVE/HATE, and everything in between. I also address the infamous oil consumption issues with these cars and tell/show you everything that has broken in my years of owning this Genesis. I also slip in a Muscle Car Show edit just to break up the dialogue a bit because there is A LOT of information in this video.
Leave me any question below I answer all of them!
And also, Happy New Year, Here's to 2019!!

I have a 2014 5.0 R-spec that I bought a year ago with 30k miles for $20k. Love this car. I wish there were more after market stuff for it but aside from that it's the best car I've owned. Great video. Keep up the good work =)

Hey guys, thanks for the info. I am very close to buying a 13 R spec. Is this a reliable car? Honestly that’s more important than anything to me. Also, are you really getting over 23 mpg ? Premium only ?

    • @trulz69
      @trulz69 3 роки тому

@@benkemp5621 It's as reliable as any other car in its class. I bought my 2014 Rspec 5.0 in January of 2018 with 30k miles on it. I also purchased an extended warranty up to 5 years/100k miles. The first two years I had no issues. I replaced the rims, tires, rotors (cross drilled and slotted), Magnaflow Cat Back exhaust and modified the air intake box to fit a generic 4" K&N filter (model# RE-0870 ). About 6 months ago the Genesis started stalling and stranded me twice. After 5 trips to the dealership replacing the Fuel pump, crankshaft positioning sensor, oil regulator, fuel injector (#6 on the drivers side) and finally the entire ECM (the codes it was throwing were erratic which explained the faulty ECM unit) which btw, was covered under the factory warranty. A total of over $6k worth of warranty work. Now she is running like a beast. I'm sharing this not to scare you out of buying your 2013 model, just to advise you that with any high performance luxury car purchase, you should buy an extended warranty. It pretty much pays for itself with only a few trips to the dealership. The car is well built and I am totally satisfied with my purchase. And yes, always premium gas. I average 20mpg. Hope that helps =)

I've got a 2012 R-Spec that looks the same as yours. Bought at 40K miles, now has 104K. I've not had any of the electrical issues, all my electronics work perfectly. Only repair so far has been a new alternator right around the 100K mark. I've been pretty happy with it for the last 4 years.

I've had my 2013 5.0 rspec since June of 2018 and boy do I love it. Hate thay theres no aftermarket for it, and the trans gets weird sometimes, but it's been great so far. Even my buddy who had a 2017 392 Charger loves my genesis. Got mine for 18k with 48k on it.

Xtalgic. Big fan down in the RALEIGH, NC area. You are so spot on with your comment on all the “brand snobs” shitting on Hyundai products. I spent almost a year looking for a V8 sedan to replace another badass sleeper, my 2009 Infiniti G37 (was just too small for me). I had very strict financial restrictions I put on myself ($18,000) and had no real sense of urgency as I loved my G37. I tend to like cars that many folks don’t appreciate, but in the end I narrowed the pool to 2011-13 Infiniti M56S (badass 420HP car that gets no love either), 2009 Mercedes E63 AMG, 2009-2011 Audi A8, and the 2012-204 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 RSpec. The Lexus LS 460 was also in the running but it lacked the “sport” characteristics of the others. It came down to a 2011 Infiniti M56S (96,000 miles) and the 2012 Hyundai Genesis R-Spec that we’re actually at sister car dealerships (both were listed in the $15,000 range). I was ready to pull the trigger on the M, but the price on the RSpec dropped $1000 on a Saturday and the Hyundai only had 67,000 miles and was a one owner. That was the deciding factor and I sped over to the dealer, took it for a ride, didn’t even haggle as I had a $250 test drive credit they offered and walked out the door having paid only $14,250 plus taxes and fees!!!!! I had driven E63 AMGs, many A8s, and the M56S (extremely rare vehicle) and the RSpec was by far the best all around performer and a brake replacement didn’t cost $5000 (like the E63😂😂). Let the haters hate while we just blow by them on their way to the dealership for another expensive fix!!!

So weird that the 12’s don’t have BTA but my friend’s 11 sonata SE does. Beautiful car and great editing. Really enjoyed the video. I had toyed with the idea of getting a 2015 Genesis 5.0 to replace my 2007 Mercedes S550. It’s the only decently affordable car that gives me the same type of interior vibe that my S gives me without being the same car or terribly unreliable.

  • @brendanteamsters

Dude, okay. First- thanks to you for doing this video. For once-like you call em,”brand snobs”, don’t give an objective view on this car. They just nitpick the shit out of these cars just bc it’s a Hyundai. And then you come along and actually give a straight, non biased, and EDUCATED insight into the Hyundai badged Genesis rspec. Much appreciated, and that’s an understatement to the extreme.
Second- the hard data on cost of ownership in the long run, the gremlins that exist, the pleasures of ownership, etc. Where have you been hiding all these years that I’m just now finding your channel and seeing this video. Lemme tell you something, brother!(In my best Macho Man voice here) This compendium of knowledge that you shared here is epic. I’m 43, have been watching this car since it’s debut more than 10 years ago, and after driving the newly badged GENESIS line of G-whatevers, I still favor the Rspec. Now with you sharing the info you’ve done here, I’m now more than convinced that it truly is the car to get.
Enough said. Thanks again for sharing.

I test drive a 2019 G70 with 3.3T and I admit I don’t want to step away from the V8 but wow that 3.3T was impressive!

I hear good things about the BTR TCM tune clearing up any shift latency and improving transmission responsiveness. They also make an engine tune as well. Excellent car for the money. I drove a black 2012 exactly like this when I owned a tuned 3.8 Gen coupe track manual. The engine was obviously more powerful, but considering the rspec sedan weighed 800 lbs more than my coupe, it didn’t feel much quicker and I kept the coupe as handling was superior and I expect fuel economy was as well. Great video.

    • @Xtalgic

Awesome vehicle, one of the best luxury car sedans ever built. Reliability is awesome just like Toyota and Honda, the manufacturer tested the engine for 800,000 miles. Hyundai forum people have been putting well over 200,000 miles on their Genesis Sedan with the V6 and V8 with routine maintenance.

I also had the camera go out but was recently replaced under warranty. Only cost $112 according to warranty claim! Only other issue was internment headlight flash on and off due to switch on turn signal stalk also replaced under warranty. Great car. Most likely will replace with Equus in a few years. Great video! My 2012 R-Spec is about just over 120,000mi as well! The ONLY thing I've had to replace was the rear back-up camera! Still running original brake-pads, I did change the spark-plugs, had a full de-carbonization done. I do have the same rattle on the rear deck that just started last month, only issue I have is the oil consumption. Other than that, best car I've ever owned, no issues whatsoever in the past 4yrs I've owned it!

Few questions about the de-carb process. Where’d you get it done? Was is a chemical based process or media blasting? How much? And any noticeable difference afterwards??

@@Xtalgic sorry for the late reply. I had it done at the dealer. They use the walnut-blasting process. You're supposed to do the cleaning every 50K, costs about $130. If possible wyohotrods, look for a Southern Car and if possible, a one-owner R-Spec. I bought my 2012 5.0 R-Spec down here in North Carolina and it was a one-owner with 67,000 miles. I found the previous owners business card in the owners manual and I reached out to him and he was awesome. He took incredible care of the car and was in the process of upgrading the exhaust (he had the x-pipe installed) which saved me some coin as I installed Borla mufflers last week and it sounds incredible!!

I never spent under $300 dollars for repairs or general service that goes even for a oil change and I had my friend a certified mercedes mechanic taking care of the cars. If you want a lighter smaller more nimble version of the equus without the fridge and reclining back seats and all that, the genesis is for you. Also, I’m sure the Equus beats the genesis in ride comfort as well, but both ride amazing. Let me know what you go with!

But when it cools down it's fine. Ive changed the trans fluid 3 times with Amsoil myself. That seems to help. (Dont use Valvoline Max life...) I use Berryman's fuel treatment every 4th fill up. My brake pads lasted over 100K. I had an alternator blow up at 80K. But the car has been pretty solid. And yes, the transmission shifts like a snail in manual mode.

Those are my summer wheels/tires, I run a dedicated snow tire for the winter. And thank you and welcome!

I have a 2012 R-Spec with 241k on the clock, and it's literally one of the fastest vehicles I've ever owned. Currently in the shop waiting for the factory throttle body (trust me you need to replace them brand new), and I've embarrassed mustangs and stock hemis. Would love some advice on tuning. Zero transmission issues, other than it bogging down under mid-pressure acceleration.

What was wrong with yours? Everytime I let off it slows down funny and idle drops fast almost like u throw it in neutral when I pull up to a stop light .. wondering if it's my TB cause if I flick the pedal on decel a few times it slows for fine

@@boostedek3573the TPS went bad, and the used one I ordered wouldn't take.
New TB comes with the TPS. Know that it's not cheap and comes from S. Korea direct from Hyundai.

Miss my '12 RSpec. Had mine for 4yrs. Great, great, great car! Only issue: had to replace the engine due to oil consumption. Everything else was minor: oil leak, alternator had to be replaced, battery, and tires aren't cheap. Lol.
    RSpec needs paddle shifters!
Regarding Sport Mode: computer shifts first 3 gears and then she's all yours.
Had no problem with parking sensors, door lock, rear view camera, sun roof...
Paint chips yes, tail light condensation yes, oil consumption yes.
