I just subscribed to your channel I have been in love with the cb400t and 400n for 35 years I own a 1977 cb400t 1978 cb400t and 2 1980 cb400n keep the videos coming. I'm also a massive fan of all vintage Japanese on and off road motorcycles
Thank you for subscribing man! Always appreciated! in the near future I’ll be making a lot more videos all about vintage Japanese motorcycles! (Some of them will be about these Honda’s but mostly new projects!)
The only bolt that fits in to remove the flywheel in this engine is that hollow one from the oil filter. I own one and work on several cbs 400 II and twin
Have the same bike.Used torun fine then problems Starts well then after riding for 30 minutes, loss of power Black smoke. After letting her cool off starts again then after 30 minutes same problem.Carbs cleaned twice, new plugs, tried. Another coil…again same problem.Any suggestions…..Low mileage bike…totally baffled?
Ah super annoying man! The colour of the smoke usually indicates what the issue is. If I’m not mistaken black or dark smoke indicates that the bikes is running too rich. I think I would check a couple of things. The colour the spark plugs after one of those 30 min. Rides. It’s should be brown/grayish. If it’s black it’s running too rich, if it’s white it running too lean. I’m assuming it’s running too rich. There could be a couple reasons for that. 1 the floats aren’t adjusted properly so the gas running over in to the engine. 2 the air filter is clogged, so little air is entering the engine throwing off the mixture. 3 the mixture screws are out of whack causing it to run too rich. I’m assuming the bike is stock and it has the stock jets installed. If not that something you could check out aswell. Hope that helps my man! Good luck! If you have any other questions let me know!
Slowly getting around to doing what you have suggested.Carbs done again for the third time, floats checked etc.Now because the compression was quite low had a mechanic install new piston rings. As electric started was finished, started on a kick.Started up and again black smoke …..ran for several minutes then stalled.Took out plugs to check color.Plugs very black and soaked with oil…..not gas? What could be causing oil to spill onto the plugs? Rings improperly installed…..broken on installation…..gasket not seated properly? Frustrated after all work done by myself and hired mechanic…….as said previously only 25K miles!
@markhayvren2203 oh man that sucks! All your suggestions sound very plausible. I would check if there’s something wrong in the head seeing how the pistons just got the new rings etc. (did you get a new headgasket?) Perhaps it would be smart to check wether the work was done proper, I assume it would be because it’s done by a professional. But you never know.. Chasing gremlins can be a b*tch! Good luck.
Consensus seems to be that carb kits did not contain the proper jets which should be …Primary 75 and Secondary 110. Overall these carbs have been cleaned with new kits 3 times. At this point not trusting any on line suppliers. Can you recommend a very reliable source that can provide the proper jets…….really would appreciate your assistance…..thks Mark
@markhayvren2203 that sucks man. I would try and buy the specific jets you need and maybe a couple extra that are a little bigger or smaller. I buy mine at CafeRacerWebshop but I’m sure lots of other websites sell them aswell. Good luck!
Bad electrics are so frustrating. You can figure it out. I'm rebuilding the same bike, but a 1978. Mine is a disaster, but I have spark. It sat for 38 years. Keep chipping away at it. You will figure it out.
Let me know how that turns out! It’s crazy the state some of these bike are in. Almost like people want to destroy them but don’t have the courage for it haha
To be honest with you I have no idea. I have seen a lot of 1carb conversions so it should definitely be doable. But i would search a couple of forums if you want answers to those questions. Good luck!
