Apart from The Man Who Knew Too Much, Hitchcock did not copy his own work, unlike a lot of other film-makers. In my opinion that's the way directors should approach a body of work.
I might be old fashioned as I abhor franchises. I can stomach a sequel, but in general I find that any more than that, originality suffers.

I can respect that. Many stories forget to quit while they are ahead. However, some franchises actually manage to build a strong through-line between the stories to create a greater, more complex world. For me, it just depends on the filmmaker/studio. In other words, do they actually care, or do they just want money?
