classic/10
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right? What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?
Hallowed Be Thy Name is seriously one of the greatest songs ever, of any genre
It's definitely my favorite song by them
Brain Dead Messiah I know right? how could he not mention it
My fav song of this album definetley. My fv Maiden song goes to Aces High though
i agree its my second favorite song of all time, definitely my favorite iron maiden track
Sam Nicholad hallowed be thy name is the first song of my conscious memory and I only knew it from my dad always singing it in the car and I'm only 17 and it's to this day still my favorite song
Kinda brushed over the best song Maiden has ever written, and possibly the best metal song of all time. Hallowed be thy Name is metal perfection
first time I heard it was watching jamie thomas skate to it in Welcome to Hell. Definitely a killer fucking song
gotpezz 6:32 He actually does mention it
Go listen to “don’t fear the reaper “ or anything by Montrose or everything by van halen. Have a listen to Animals by pink Floyd ,welcome to the machine. Then rant about Iron oh my god awful maiden. Yeah get real losers.
@@sigmasix3719 lol such a kid
@@sigmasix3719 do you seriously think don’t fear the reaper is better than hallowed be thy name? Btw rush is better than pink floyd
How he not gonna talk about Hallowed Be Thy Name
Liam Hopkins I think he mentioned it but just called it the closer of the album and not by its name
He did

or shellac's 1000 hurts c'mon!
You gotta do Spiderland man.
Seriously, how havent you done pet sounds yet?
Awesome choice. Iron Maiden was what got me into classic metal (after starting with Linkin Park and System Of A Down) and it is still one of my favourite metal bands.
Happy New Year, Deadly Tomato! :)
Ah, Black Sabbath's first record would be a good review
Melvin Slog or Vol. 4/Master Of Reality

Few suggestions for classics reviews :
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
Albert King - Born Under A Bad Sign
Jamiroquai - Emergency On Planet Earth
Gil Scott Heron - Pieces of a Man
Isaac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul
TJHE - Are you Experienced?
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn
Mos Def - Black On Both Sides
Outkast - Aquemini
Supertramp - Crime Of The Century
I've been waiting for Maggot Brain for 4 years. Maybe next year.
would love to see a maggot brain review-- easily an all time favorite for me.
Nah those all suck
Piero Scaruffi Seriously guy?
Definitely need a Supertramp album review.
Now come On tell me what other bands published as much epic albums in a row as Iron Maiden, Killers, Number of the Beast, Piece Of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son.
King Midas none.
Lynch Smith Thats right
Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, Justice, Black Album
If you mean as MANY epic albums in a row try "War & Pain", "Roooaaarrr", "Killing Technology", "Dimension Hatross", "Nothingface", "Angel Rat", "The Outer Limits"... I mean, I could go on but by now, anyone who bothered to read this would've given up thinking, "Who the fuck is this guy talking about?" Dig below the suface people. There's a whole world of incredible music below the tip of the "metal" iceberg.
adam kay I'm now a fan thanks to this comment.
Maiden are in my blood. Been into them since I was 12. I enjoyed this review

Virtual X - Seventh son
seventh son is underrated
yeah, and a matter of life and death, too
Seventh son is not underrated at all, every iron maiden fan loves that album. Its always on a high position in the ranks and they even re-made a world tour in 2012/2013
@@MuninBandana Oh, yeah. I love Seventh Son of the Seventh Son of the Seventh Son of the Seventh Son of the Seventh Son of the Seventh Son... No, fuck that repetitive garbage.
@@ns6438 sorry, I wont enjoy it now
@@ns6438 dude he means the album as a whole. Ssoass is a top 3 Iron Maiden album, even if the title track is repetitive (which aside from the chorus, it isn’t)
'The prisoner' has a special place in my heart, because I discovered it in a year when I was almost falling in depression. It really felt like a prison. My inner thoughts, encounters and experiences with other people were bad, and most of my friends went away to another country to work or study, so I couldn't even have some help.
Almost finishing that year, I heard that song and it was amazing how it got me so pumped up. I was jumping and singing with tears of happiness falling down my face. After that I started fixing my own life, reworking on my thoughts and feeling alive again.
It's amazing how music can change you. This masterpiece is something that will stay with me fondly forever.
Damn, "Hallowed Be Thy Name" is still one of the best songs ever in my opinion. It's so epic I can't even

I'd kick POM/7th son for Brave New World or AMOLAD

2: Book of Souls
3: Somewhere in Time
Glad to see you covering a metal album for classics week. After three years of classics week without a single metal review, this was a treat.
Things I think youshould review
-A Pearl Jam album
-A Tool album
-A Primus album
-Farmhouse by Phish
-Endtroducing by DJ Shadow
-Maxinquaye by Tricky
-In Utero/Bleach by Nirvana
-Mezzanine by Massive Attack
-Are You Experienced by Jimmy Hendrix
-Kid A/OK Computer by Radiohead
-Donuts by J Dilla
-Golden Age by Beck (you said you didn't like his lighter stuff, so Odelay is a good alternative)
-Hello Nasty by The Beastie Boys (I thinks it's one of the best hip-hop albums out there and no doubt beastie boys' best)
Fuck, I forgot Alice In Chains in there.
I foresee a Donuts review for Classics weeks.
He already reviewed Donuts on his other channel, thatistheplan.
Has he done one for Tool ? I wanna see one for 10,000 days man.
trumpetking11 it's on this channel.
Just a little tip because I know a lot of random facts about Iron Maiden: 22 Acacia Avenue is not just about A prostitute, it is specifically about Charlotte "The Harlot", a mythical figure in the world of prostitution who was rumored to have lived on 22 Acacia Avenue in the 1800s.
It is part of a saga of songs written by Iron Maiden including "Charlotte the Harlot" and "From Here to Eternity", which loosely references the Film with the same name.
6:40 on repeat
+Andy Chen lol
As both history and music lover I really appreciate your latest reviews, great work Anthony!
Love all of Iron Maiden. Hallowed Be Thy Name always takes my breath away. Powerslave is still prob my favorite album by them tho
I really love the idea of doing an older classic album once a week.
*REVIEW THESE CLASSICS:*
Godflesh - Streetcleaner
Terrorizer - World Downfall
Non Phixion - The Future is Now
Napalm Death - Scum
Necro - The Prefix For Death
Can - Tago Mago
Misfits - Walk Among Us
Love - Forever Changes
New York Dolls - 1st album
Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure
Non-Phoxion for fucking sure
This was a really great review I feel like it gave me deeper insight into one of my favorite albums, thanks man!
Great review Anthony. Also, excellent quick rundown late-70s / early 80's metal.
Powerslave is better. But it's still awesome you're finally doing some metal. Hoping for Rust In Peace next year. Thank you *insert play on your name let's settle on Deaththony Thrashtano today*.
As this is classics week I think Nomber Of The Beast is totally justified. I agree it has some lackluster tracks (Gangland and partly Invaders), but it contains some of the best moments of the bands discography. While I think Powerslave is stronger overall, this the more iconic album and with Hallowed Be Thy Name and The Number Of The Beast it also has my 2 favourite Maiden songs.
R0DisG0D
agree, disagree, for me Seventh Son has all the songs I like (read as "I like all the songs") and a unified theme that connects them all together. It's fantastic. But listening to Number now, I am really getting how it follows on from Killers while bringing in the classic Maiden sound.
There is too much filler on Powerslave for it to be their best in my opinion; those tracks being Losfer Words (Big Orra), Flash of the Blade and Back in the Village. The remaining five tracks are among their best though, with the title track or Mariner probably being my favorite song by them. The only real filler on The Number of the Beast is Gangland. They should have put Total Eclipse on the album instead (it is on the CD edition), which is probably Bruce's best vocal performance ever.
***** haha ok, tell me where he reviewed 'underground black and doom and experimental stuff'
***** lel. None of it is underground black and doom and experimental stuff. Nice try tho

Steal This Album! too
He did today. Two years later. Rejoice.
He listened to you after two fucking years😂
Great album. I appreciated this retrospective. All your observations were pretty spot on.
I consider myself a pretty hardcore metal head, and I've been listening to a lot of the classics recently. In fact, I listened to two of the albums you mentioned in this video yesterday(Powerslave, Heaven & Hell).
I also watched your best albums of the year video, and I appreciated your insights there, as well. In fact, I picked up two albums on your recommendation; Labyrinth Constellation and Roads to the North. I had heard good things about both albums beforehand, but your recommendation was the tipping point. I've yet to listen to either of them, but I am really excited about getting to them.
Anyway, keep up the great work!
Thank you for reviewing this! Loved these guys in high school, especially their first album and powerslave. I've got to give them another listen! :)
Rush - 2112?
Fantastic review!!!
Great review Anthony! You can't really go wrong with some classic Iron Maiden!
they have maybe 3 albums better than this, give or take
thanks for making Maiden cool for the tight-pants beanie-wearers tho we needed that

Why would you make children's music popular with anyone, though?
Piero Scaruffi le /mu/ puturishium doesn't listen to le filthy metla
Threecreation, what happened to your channel?
so um, maybe someone will agree, or disagree, or idk. I really enjoy this album, but i can't get into other Maiden albums. I listened to the next 2 after this one, and they just didnt click. Bummed me out
I hear you, I only found some songs in other albums I actually enjoyed this much. Anyway, maiden isn't on my main musical interests so I don't let it get me down.
Try the first two if you haven't. To me, the first three Maiden records display the most personality because they kind of standardized their sound beginning with Piece of Mind. The first three have a little bit of that punk edge (don't kill me, Steve), too, which disappeared afterward.
Ok I would get this if you were talking about No Prayer for the Dying or Virtual XI or something but the two albums immediately following this one are my #2 and #1 albums of all time so the only advice I can give would be listen to the first 2 albums, which have a more punk feel to them.
Listen to seventh son
I can only listen to Killers and Powerslave myself. I feel like most of their other stuff is super mediocre
Next Classics Week review: Pink Floyd - Animals?
Or 'piper gates'.
I'd go with Dark Side, but I could see Anthony liking Animals a bit more.
Next one is Horses - Patti Smith
I saw them live at Sonisphere this year and even though I don't like Metal very much, the show was amazing! 100% would recommend to anybody, no matter if they like metal or not.
You went to sonisphere and you "don't like Metal very much" ?!
BOBOUDA yeah, I accompanied a friend who won a trip. I was in the first row for Baby Metal XD
Mims Lang
Well if you got into Maiden thanks to the festival you sure did good going !
And wow... I don't know if Baby Metal is the best way to get into the genre but I guess it was an original experience !
BOBOUDA Nah, still don't like them but I would absolutely go to a concert of theirs again.
Yeah, they are one of those bands that is amazing live, even if you wouldn't listen to them regularly. Someone who is like that for me is Bruno Mars. Excellent live but I don't listen to his studio albums ever really.
this album was my childhood...cheers for reviewing it fantano
1. Seventh Son
2. Powerslave
3. The Number of the Beast
4. Piece Of Mind
5. Killers
I would put Brave New World over Killers, i like it better. Other than that, pretty accurate ranking.
This is such a classic album and there are songs on this album you cannot hate, but love. Classic is indeed the right word.
great review, anthony! haven't heard this one in quite some time.
Trout Mask Replica. I have a feeling it isn't going to happen.........oh well

It's like the ultimate hipster album tho.
Pretty sure he doesn't like that much. He said in reference to other reviews that it is self indulgent

KID A, ANTHONY. WE NEED THAT REVIEW. Radiohead's best album, and one of the greatest ever.
Piece of mind, Power slave, Number of the beast, and Killers are all amazing albums.
Even the self titled!
@@criticsando3829Prowler, Phantom of The Opera, Iron Maiden (self titled song lol) are all great rememberable songs that I always go back to whether if it's because of a sudden urge just to listen to the opening riff of Phantom of The Opera or the badass sounding start of Prowler. god I love this band.
Really like how u start this video w some context regarding the state of metal at the time. My favourite maiden albums r self titled and powerslave :)
hey great vid i really like this short metal history in the beginning hope to see more videos like that
The white album and KID A please. I've been waiting all year for this week
I've asked for both as well. Think we're fighting a losing battle lol

Yeah, TBH, I like his reviews of classic stuff better. More classics please!
first metal album i've ever listened to. checked it out on a whim and i'm surprised at how sick it is
I enjoy the classics reviews, keep it up!

Hey man, love your stuff. Heres a few of my classic albums that I'd love to see you review
Nirvana-Nevermind

The Smiths-The Queen Is Dead
Sonic Youth-Daydream Nation
Pixies-Doolittle
The Stooges-Fun House
Radiohead-OK Computer

Dude! I love Maiden and I really enjoy your reviews man!
You should do more straight up music history lessons on this channel i love maiden and knew nothing out the early years of them dropping members left and right your my new favorite teacher
one of my favourite albums of all time
Killers is my favorite Maiden record but you can't understate this albums' influence
killers is also my favorite. its insanely underrated.
I love the punk vibe of the first two records, though Killers was more metal than their self-titled
definitely. paul di'anno was pretty much a punk singing in a metal band.
Yep but they got pretty progressive in their golden years when the group brought in synths
Count me in also for Killers.. Def my favorite
thanks for doing this review. i mostly listen to doom, atmospheric, and some thrash and don't know much about the classics. i can admire most oldskool bands for furthering the genre but when it comes to actually trying to pick albums to hear it's pretty difficult. you've made it a little easier for me to find my footing. so. cool.
Oh man, Horses was one of the albums I got on Vinyl for Chrimbus. Hyped if that's the album you're doing next.
Slint - Spiderland please!!!!!
Yesterday, you put the wrong Iron Maiden vinyl to trick everyone into thinking you were going to review that album. Instead, you caught everyone off guard and switched it. It seems you coaxed us into your snafutano.
Hey Anthony,
There are so many classic albums out there that people would love you to review so instead of just doing one "classics week" every year would you ever consider (in addition to classics week) doing something like a quarterly classics weekend? Just for the purpose of fitting in a few more classic reviews every year.
Just a suggestion. Keep doin you
-R
Really enjoyed your perspective and review of this album, but no mentioning of the blossoming Thrash And Speed Metal that took place (mostly) on the West Coast punk scene with bands like DRI and Battalion Of Saints? And maybe even the sludgy, Black Sabbath-esque sound of Flipper and My War era Black Flag? I know these examples aren't heavy metal, but I feel like it gives a better perspective of just how important this genre (Heavy Metal) became when future artists mixed it with other genres, like Punk or Noise. You still did manage to do this album justice, I never did get big into Heavy Metal as much as Punk and Noise, but I always liked Sabbath and Iron Maiden, and I always loved this album.
666thony beastano
Megadeth-Rust in Peace,do it for the 2015 classic review.
Aw, sort of disappointed that you didn't talk more on Hallowed be thy Name. That's my favourite song from that album and the only one I listen to on a semi-regular basis. It has a philosophical, existential message going for it that I think should be explored.
Thank you for a great indeept understanding of the influence of the Band and especially the Album
Van Halens style of guitar soloing was hugely influential in metals development, can't really be brushed off with a ''sigh these insignificant plebs''.
I prefer Piece of Mind and Somewhere In Time, but still a fantastic album nonetheless!
Somewhere In Time is my favourite Maiden album!!
houstonfob2FOREVER That would make sense since you're clearly a Yes fan ;) I'd expect you to prefer Seventh Son for that reason!
+MrOmac09 Same.

5. Somewhere in Time

*Some suggestions for classic album reviews:*
*"Songs About My Cats" by Venetian Snares*
Venetian Snares was probably one of the biggest drill 'n bass artists of the early 00s - especially after Aphex Twin's hiatus. This album was his debut and truly his most gritty and hard hitting as of yet. Oh and it's about cats. His cats.
*"The Richard D. James Album" by Aphex Twin*
Aphex Twin was another prominent figure in drill 'n bass and breakcore, and this album truly showcases his technical skill and his undeniable (yet slightly evil) genius.
*"The Trans-Canada Highway" by Boards of Canada*
Boards of Canada create truly enchanting atmospheres in their slightly haunting ambient tracks. Sometimes, no percussion is needed - since the songs on this album are so complex and melodic at times.
*"Homework" by Daft Punk*
Daft Punk's first (and best) album was just perfect. No song dragged on, there was lots and lots of creativity and at times, DP didnt even need vocals because the tracks were already full of energy.
90s electronica ftw
All of those albums are great
awesome review man
I guess I'm the only one who prefers Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son to Number of the Beast. Still a good album, though. No denying that.
TemporaryFamineShip
my favorite always has been powerslave dhebdbebhaojiao
Poopy Joe That's a good one, too!
No! Those are my favorites too :-)
Same here, and the songs Loneliness of the long distance runner on Somewhere and Only the good die young on Seventh Son are my favorite from those albums. Especially the bass part in Only the good die young... Wow!
Actually, I know a lot of people who prefer SSOASS to Number of the Beast. I prefer Powerslave.
Please review GZA - Liquid Swords for Classics Week if you haven't already Mr. Banango
Really happy to finally see a metal album for classics week :)
Dear Anthony, I started listening to this band in 2010 with your Review on 'The Final Frontier'. I was never into them before and the whole album itself makes sense!. BUT nowadays i like to eat 'fish and chips' more and hate discussions about 'Fear of the Dark', because I have no fear in the dark.
That tiny copy of Horses in the background
I feel like Iron Maiden is super famous and not famous at the same time. Mabye it’s cause I’m 24 and none of my peers have ever known anything about them.
They are like the mainstream of the non-mainstream music 😂
It's the case of a band selling literally millions upon millions of records, but somehow not mainstream.
Love this review!
This is the first Iron Maiden album I owned, and what got me hooked. Such a good listen.
If I can advice an interesting album that I think is pivotal in the shift from metal as a bluesy genre, to it's more "pure" metallic onslaught form: Stained Class - Judas Priest, from 1978. It is their final album form their classic phase, before they adopted their more commercial sound.
Curiously enough, none of it songs are live staples, but nonetheless, it is considered by many fans to be one of their best (if not their best) work. It contains a lot of elements that you would not really associate with the Priest, like complex song structures and tempo changes, and lyrics that are NOT cheesy, but actually quite thoughtful.
I would really love to see your take on this album! :)
Bram Claes Judas Priest is associated with overly cheesy and just plain bad lyrics, not thoughtful ones.
Timothy E. I own their whole discography, and as such, I am perfectly aware of that. However: their early (pre 1978's Hell Bent For Leather) work is mostly an exception to that rule, and the their second and fourth album (sad wings of destiny, and stained class) are just godly. I highly recommend checking them out, especially if cheesiness and simplicity is what bugs you the most about Priest (or metal in general)
Bram Claes I don't mind the cheesiness, I like it; I prefer their '80s and '90s stuff because it's heavier, not so much into what basically just sounds like blues with more distortion to me on a lot of early heavy metal.
+Bram Claes Agreed, that one and Killing Machine are maybe the first typical Metal albums. I still prefer Sad Wings and Screaming For Vengeance though.
Agreed. I think I prefer Killing Machine and Sin After Sin as records but your point is legit.
COUNTERPOINT: Megadeth - Rust In Peace
table leg ham dog I know I am super late to this but they are kinda too different to compare, Megadeth is thrash and Iron Maiden is Heavy
Hey what a great documentation of maiden and what they're all about.
Children of the Damned, 22 Acacia Avenue and Hallowed be thy name are my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITES.
A Van Halen diss? Now I'm upset...
Van Halen are amazing :(
The number of the beast cover art is actually the reason his Catholic mother threw out his stack of albums.
My favorite from Maiden is Somewhere in Time. I don't know why, I know it's not perfect but the blend of cool 80's synth and those cool lyrics about being a stranger in the future really reminds me of movies like Blade Runner. I don't know, I just love that album to death!
I know it's been 8 years, but I don't think that album has any bad songs and they are all great or super great 😄
You forgot mention that 22 Acacia Avenue is the 2nd in a series of three songs that include Charlotte the Harlot, 22 Acacia Avenue, and From Here to Eternity, they're a story arch of Charlotte.
Van halen rules!!!!
Jorge Luevano 🤘
Rip
Rip Eddie!!
Killers is their most underrated album, Im willing to debate anyone who prefers the synth and drumming on their weaker albums afterwards.
I think that any album that came after No prayer for the dying is very underrated. It's truth that the first seven albums are legendary but Dance of death and the Book of souls are also great.
Anthony, when are you gonna do a classic review of Jane Doe? That album seriously deserves it
Patty Smith - Horses, is a great pick for Classics week.
One of the greatest metal albums ever
REVIEW Sodom's agent orange!!! Or Rust in peace!!!
Maiden? Never thought od see it on your channel. Cool. Good review. Rock on. Maiden at Cochilla? Next. Great album 22 The avenueee
First two I love so much. Beast rocks. They started to repeat themselves real soon. Glad they are still being creative and rock in though. One of those bands that peaked early for me. Prefer Diannos stuff
Although on the heavier side of metal I think a review of a Carach Angren album would be interesting coming from someone as analytical, and deliberate as you.
seventh son of a seventh son is a great record
Kid A has to be next Fancano
Hi Anthony, could you do a review on the rock band The 69 Eyes? They are big Europe, where they're from. The 69 Eyes have a successful, extensive catalog of interesting music spanning decades! Many people here in N. America aren't aware of them and I would love to get your take on one of my favorite rock bands.
Aha, he fakes us out with the Killers cover yesterday. I still feel like relistening to Killers though.
Maybe tomorrow he'll help me finally get into Patti Smith's Horses.
This is up there with reign in blood
Love your comment and profile pic
Maiden is my favorite but Is this album really that influential ad Reign in blood? I mean, people consider that a thrash masterpiece
Rynihilation slayer sucks
Rynihilation oh yeah u mean that album with 2 good songs on it
Love the profile pic.
Horses! Yesssssssss.

Shit, you're right. Kate Bush record. Fuck, I don't know jack about Kate Bush. I was looking forward to a Patti Smith review. Ah, well.
I would have never pegged Fantano for a Maiden fan. This is such a pleasant surprise. :D
I know it's classics week, and this may be a bit early, but you should review Modest Mouse's Strangers to Ourselves. It releases March 3 on Epic Records.
