In this edition of #TheDailyDoug, I'm returning to Iron Maiden for one of their classic early tracks. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this past week, Number of the Beast is one of the more controversial tunes from IM's catalog...especially with its overt Biblical references. This is my first time hearing it...and I have thoughts. I hope you enjoy! #UpTheIrons

Doug, your "when the saints go marching in" is spot on! Although I like many of their albums, I get this persistent "galloping on horseback" feel to the songs ... always riding into battle in some ancient war ... I can always spot an Iron Maiden song just on that soundscape.

Greatest band ever in my humble opinion. Their shows are electric and when the crowd joins in it's magic! As a kid I was in a few bands and yes, we played us some Maiden! Coolest songs that we played in our band were Aces High and Rime of the Ancient Mariner! Singing and playing those songs were amazing! We played the Dianno stuff, my favorites were Murders in the Rue Morgue, Remember Tomorrow and Phantom of the Opera. And that stuff blew people away. That is one of the most soul piercing screams to ever tear itself out of a human throat.
EDIT: A bit of lore about that scream as I understand it: the scream wasn't supposed to be there. During the recording process Bruce was having a tough time with the timing in the intro and producer Martin Birch (look him up please!) was relentlessly pushing Bruce to nail the part. At one point Bruce got so frustrated that he just howled at the top of his lungs. Fortunately for all of us, the tape was still rolling. And there you have it!

    • @edhunterofmaidengrad

@@edhunterofmaidengrad that's correct. Martin Birch wouldn't stop the takes as he wasn't happy with the scream. It's one of the greatest screams in music history. Nothing much comes close.

So, Doug, you’ve asked before about the differences between guitar solo styles with the Maiden guitarists. This is a great one to highlight it … Dave is the first solo - legato, fast, ‘twiddly’ and lots of hammering on and off rather than picking every note. Adrian on the second solo is then a total contrast - sharper tone, accurate but almost in a lazy way, more graceful and more ‘rocky’ but without anything ever feeling forced.
Janick is a different story altogether! Dance of Death which you’ve already reacted to highlights him really well.

It's all about that bass.....Just listen to Steve's bass and everything else just compliments him. When I was 12 this album came out and I was staying at my Grandparents farm in early summer. They had a nice speaker system and I would listen to this album over and over. I was just picking up bass guitar and I eventually developed a similar sound to Harris. I learned every, what I called "trick" that Harris would use and to this day I find my love for Maiden is due to focusing on the bass lines and his cool licks and fills. It's much the same for me and Chris Squire of Yes....I focus on the bass and everything else builds around it....but it is all about that bass. P.S.----damn you for that Saints go Marching In reference----I never heard it that way and now I picture an Iron Maiden String Band dressed as devils marching on Broad Street Philadelphia on New Year Day complete with Steve Harris and Dickinson in Dem Golden Slippers...lol

Such a good album. This would have been my first Maiden show, but I had to sell my tickets because it was the same weekend as the US Festival. I did get to see them on the next two tours, so not complaining. Piece of Mind and Powerslave were legendary shows. Even has Twister Sister for support.
Unfortunately it was the last album/tour with Clive Burr on drums. Another great drummer forced into early retirement because of MS.

Glad you didn’t do that one in the church!
I always felt it started in D major, slid down to C major and back for the intro/outdo. Then went to good old E minor for the verse/chorus, and shifted to D minor for the solos. That jazzy bit in the solo section still twists my fingers on the bass. Feels pentatonic.
Great tune, and the whole controversy probably sold more albums than radio play ever could!

Steve Harris is the master of making major keys sound heavy. I miss their shorter, to the point songs like this from back in the day. The new stuff is cool but I get tired of the long, bloated arrangements, I wish they would throw in a few shorter, kick you-in-the-face old-school burners on the new albums.

Really hoping to see him tap into Ghost's catalogue one of these days. They have always struck me as a band that puts a lot of care in the general composition of their songs. They can be a bit poppy for being a metal band, but that doesn't mean there's not actual effort and thought behind it.
As for the bible thumpers, Number of the Beast in particular has always been a weird one for that sect of Christians to get upset about. The story is about a guy who sees some satanist activity taking place, freaks out about it, wants to stop it, wants to call the cops, etc... But then the evil takes hold of him and he becomes just another victim. I feel like it's pretty easy to see this as a song warning you about the powers of evil. There's plenty of classic literature that hits on the same sort of notes. In fact, there's even stories in the Bible that hone in on this same exact sort of message (Adam & Eve & The Snake???)
But the guitars are loud, so must be bad, lol....

A suggestion for you Doug when you go to your first Maiden show, don't forget to bring ear plugs. They are one of the loudest bands (still) and if you have sensitive ears, you'll need them. Hell, you might need them anyway. I was 14 when I saw my first Maiden show (that was the Somewhere in Time tour), and my ears haven't been the same since. And no I'm not complaining. Just offering friendly advice.

I have to say - Maiden have been using a new sound engineer for the last couple of tours. I saw them at the London O2 towards the earlier stage of the Legacy...Tour and it was EASILY the best I have every heard them sound live - loud enough sure, but no so loud that it hurt. Perfectly mixed, perfectly balanced - and I thought Bruce was singing better than I have ever heard him (and I've seen them A LOT!)

@@williampanic8292 Absolutely right!! I'm ashamed to admit it but before I saw them on The Legacy tour, I'd been having thoughts that surely by now they'd be showing signs of time and circumstance etc, especially with Bruce having been through and beaten the cancer and all.
