What's the other album?
this band is the musical embodiment of "my generation doesn't know what real music is"
i mean come on, even their name? van from van halen, and fleet from fleetwood mac. fucking posers
soothsayer their band name is the name of a real woman from their hometown, moron.
soothsayer they obviously know what real music is since they stole everything about their sound.
Not just a musical embodiment. They regularly say stuff like this in interviews. I love hard rock and all but it comes off so fucking cringey.
This band is just bollox like so many so called rock bands these days. As for LZ these twats are not even in the same league.
Greta Van Fleet is what you get when you actually listen to your dad about what "real" music is and never try to find anything new for yourself.
Well said
And anything “new” is rap or pop that everyone else listens to. Your also typecasting the whole genre as old people music that’s why i didn’t get into it until much later because of the typecasting.
@@Tigerkiger2002 that's not what I meant. I grew up playing in rock bands and knew a couple of bands that played very well but they were only good at imitating the classic rock sound and had no originality for themselves. I love the type of music they play but it's nothing new thats all. Dad's eat this type of music up because they're literally rehashing their Glory days. I'm glad you finally gave rock a chance though!

Its up to people to find new music. I looked and found plenty lol

margix So basically, “IF YOU CRITICIZE ME IT’S JUST CUZ UR UGLY”
@@margix1172 broh it's fine if you like it okay everybody shitting this album is just sick of this style of music. In my opinion it's been overdone since the 70s, and everybody into greta van fleet isn't really listening to the music that music critics do enjoy.
I don't like Anthony Fantano at all for various reasons, but he and most music critics listen to more music than you or me put together because it's literally their job, and I can respect them being completely over the whole 70s loud guitar hard rock thing that has been going strong since the 60s.
It's fine that you don't agree, it just means you're into the whole 70s rock revival and aren't interested in more modern stuff
at least led zeppelin did something different with the songs they stole
Agreed
Kahn!!!!!!!!!!!! No they didn’t. Most songs they stole almost note for note word for word.
Didn't Led Zeppelin often lift lyrics and compositions but they did their own instrumentation over top of it? Then they were sued and forced to give writing credits to other artists. They often lifted old folk and blues songs, yeah they did their own thing with it but they still directly took it without giving initial credits.
Dank_Doodle_Dylan only word for word. Not more for note.
@Ben Welch all i hearing is "bro Led Zepellin stole so is ok if Greta sounds exactly like them" ffo
Why do fans of this band claim that they are saving rock. Rock and especially metal are alive and well, just not mainstream.
Olmy because rock isn’t topping the charts. Those are just the casual listeners saying that. That’s why some of these casual listeners like Greta van fleet.
I like GVF just not this album their first album felt really orginal with only a few comparable songs to classic Zepplin
Anita Bonghit that’s not original if there just copying zeppelin lmao
I googled rock billboard about a year ago. I saw imagine dragons topping a chart. What do you mean bra
@Lkhagvasuren Davaatseren your comment got a loud, ugly laugh out of me, you get a like
"..few artists stole, robbed and cheated their way to the top like Led Zeppelin did."
I'm glad Fantano mentioned that, because the amount of people who deny this despite the mountain of proof readily available with the click of a finger is unfathomable. Zep was my fav band for many years and are still top 5, but you can't say they didn't rip off their favourite artists.
they didn't rip anyone off for Rain Song or Ten Years Gone, which are arguably their most influential works anyway and the ones thousands of bands borrowed riffs from
Maybe that makes GvF more Led Zeppelin than Led Zeppelin. lol
Sure, they ripped off a lot of their songs. But they recognized the potential in other sounds, and added their own distinctive style, so masterfully that those other songs pale in comparison.
Michael stfu please
I don't think anyone at this point can argue against Led Zeppelin ripping off blues artists and Randy California, but not all of their songs were ripped off per se. I mean, you can't tell me that Achilles' Last Stand was a ripoff; hell as soon as you get past IV you'll be hard pressed to find unoriginal moments as the group got more experimental and progressive.
Remember Where's Waldo? This is him now. Feel old yet?
Yes. I feel old as shit now when I think about it. Who knew that Alcohol would destroy my life like that. I have nothing now.
Woooo that got me good 😀😁😂😂🤣😂🤣
Love your name lol
Wherethany Waldotano
Where? I don't see him...
I was expecting you to just meme on this album like everyone else, but this is actually one of your best reviews in quite a while. It was basically a video essay on the difference between artistic influence and artistic plagiarism and, ultimately, why artistic influence, even in great amounts, doesn’t negatively impact a record, so long as the artist puts their own spin on the style or branches off from it in some way, using GVF to exemplify your feelings on a broader point of discussion in music. I like that.
Great fuckin comment too
With art It’s really about the way a concept or (in music) a sound is presented which is most important. It’s what gives an artist their own style and makes them memorable. Stealing doesn’t allow you a lasting legacy.
Yeah, it was a good review, I think Anthony is just bothered by the idea of people enjoying stagnation. I'm a car guy, a good comparison of this would be people buying new recreations of old cars, some people just like that retro feel that you can't get anymore with modern twists and production applied. Of course if you're going to directly imitate Zeppelin, you'll be compared to their work directly, and is it any surprise that they don't stand up? Did The Melon really sit down and expect these guys to beat Zeppelin at their own game? Zeppelin's talent is what made them imitated in the first place.
George Pheby Very well said! I completely agree, man.
@@aero0637 I definitely understand the 'retro feel' thing, I'm just as much of a junkie for it as the next person. Thing is, there are plenty of artists nailing the retro feel without totally ripping off specific artists. The Mystery Lights, King Gizzard, Tame Impala, War On Drugs, etc all sound like they could be recorded in a specific bygone era, but they all do something unique.

RedMenace led zeppelin is as much a ripoff band as whatever this lame band is. They still owe millions to the original writers of songs theyve stolen
@@captainathens Most of those "stolen" songs were lyrics that had been swiped. Zeppelin were sonically and stylistically innovative with their approach and changed the songs considerably. The only ones I can think of that were blatant ripoffs as far as the music goes were Dazed and Confused and Black Mountainside, which were improved exponentially anyways.

Abel Ramirez Stevie may be faking 👀
(diss)Abel Ramirez, I was in the 5th row for a Stevie Wonder show, 1973 or 1974. I also saw Led Zeppelin around that time. Two weeks ago, I saw GVF. They don't care what the critics think. It's all about having fun and being true to yourself. If you love music, but you're musical talent is lacking, you become a critic. Again, who cares?
@@flyingfishsurf Good for them not caring what critics think, but they need to learn how to take from criticism to make something better. If I hand in a school assignment and a teacher says 'hey, you just copied that poem by edgar allen poe but changed around the words', and I said 'I dont care, you are just a critic of my work and lack talent', then id look like a damn idiot.
Dude have you ever seen Stevie Wonder's house?! Yeah well neither has he.
flyingfishsurf you sound so damn ignorant. Music critics (and critics in general) are people that are passionate about something enough to analyze it, yet don’t have the goal in mind to make music themselves. You don’t have to be an artist, to know what is good art.

To the boomers in the comments: Plenty of modern rock music has an old school feel to it without needing to essentially just be discount Led Zeppelin. The Oh Sees and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard in particular lean hard on the '70s style acid/psych rock feel, but both have different approaches - The Oh Sees blend it with punk, KGLTW play into their weird songwriting. Then you've got bands like Samsara Blues Experiment, that lean further into the sort of prog-rock influences of bands like The Doors, King Crimson, and Moody Blues without copying those bands the same way GVF does with Zep.
KGLTW - Psychedelic Rock
The Oh Sees - Punk Psychedelic
Samsara Blues Experiment - Prog Stoner Psychedelic
None of these bands outputs are comparable to Led Zeppelin. I like these bands, but do you have any other new bands that are making classic hard blues rock?
ok then, you go and rip off Led Zeppelin and become famous as fuck and sell out shows... and then come back and talk ✌️

@@gordoncrawford6300 Rival Sons, Kaleo, Goodbye June, Vintage Trouble. Those bands blend the older 70s Zeppelin vibe you seek. Rival Sons being the most vintage I guess, Kaleo and Goodbye June have more modern touches, Vintage Trouble play some sofyer stuff, they are more soul and blues influenced rather than rock, but still, very good. Then if you seek "Hard Blues Rock" I don't actually know exactly what you mean by that but in my mind I would recommend these guys, Black Pistol Fire, Left Lane Cruiser, 20 Watt Tombstone, Black Keys earlier records, The Blackwater Fever, The Bonnevilles, Tyler Bryant & The Shakedowns, Black River Delta. Those bands are more focused on really dirty and muddy blues, lots of fuzz and distortion, many of them are just drums and guitar, (and vocals). It could be called Hard Blues Rock, but they are not zeppelin like if that was what you ment, but if you like dirty blues you should really check out the bands I meantioned. 👍

Imagine dragons suuuuuuuuuuck
IKR I love it. Both suck.

I wholeheartedly agree! The only Dragons songs I genuinely like is the infamous Radioactive, I Bet My Life, Friction, and It's Time. And hell I have a LOT of critiques for It's time; but it snuck into my library around a period in my life where it hit strangely close to home. Otherwise they're just. Ugh. I'll take pretty much anything but them at the current stage in their career tbh.
Although I will say I can't understand the comparison to the band that opened up the turd floodgates of terribad music... the dreaded Nickleback......... uGH 😣
Greta Van Fleet's gonna come out saying that the band doesn't exist and is actually a computer AI created to emulate the sounds of other artists.
At least they would be cool
But they’re known as one of the best live bands now a days so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

People that praise Greta van fleet as "saviors of rock" are the whole reason rock is dying out, they don't dare to give anything new a chance cuz they're stuck in THEIR time deeming everything that comes as stupid and "not as good as it was back in my day" that's when the music starts to die out because of lack of inovation and a new audience.. won't be long till rock is looked at as being old people music if lazy cover bands like this keep getting attention
It already is old people music, no one wants to admit it, but it is.
I think you’ll find rock is not dying out, it’s just not popular because the majority of people are into 3 minute cheesy hip hop songs about drink, drugs, and sex. There are plenty of modern rock bands that have surfaced in recent years; Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown, Rival Sons, Snake Charmer, The Dust Coda, BlackBerry Smoke, The Cadillac Three, Greta Van Fleet... I could go on. Just because it’s not slapped in your face, doesn’t mean it’s still out there, you just have to look for it. For the record I’m 24 and can’t stand listening to the radio because it’s all the same trash. No vision, no direction, no imagery, no inspiration. Just samples and remixes left, right and centre. 🇬🇧
@@RealRogGuitar Dude, nobody is going to take you seriously if you open up with an ignorant statement like that.
@@RealRogGuitar As if rock isn't cluttered with songs about the exact same stuff lmao
Extreme metal in all of its forms is currently, to some extent, what hard rock and prog rock were in terms of vitality and an exciting alternative to mainstream music. There are so many excellent extreme metal bands out there, and lots of creativity, innovation, hybrid styles/subgenres ... (despite of what some birds of bad omen constantly repeat about a supposed stagnation or death). For those who besides the rock of the 70's and the 80's "classic" heavy metal also like extreme metal, there's still a lot of excitement out there thanks to bands like Obscura, Beyond Creation, Barren Earth, Persefone, Ne Obliviscaris, Horrendous, Ruins of Beverast, Hooded Menace, Ulcerate, Voivod, Vektor, Power Trip, Yob, High on Fire, Tribulation, Moonsorrow, Deathspell Omega, etc etc ...
Greta van Fleet is the ideal band for people who think that no good music has been released since 1987, despite only listening to classic rock radio stations and foaming at the mouth whenever their UA-cam recommendations show either someone younger than 46 or a woman holding a guitar.
Damn your a dumbass. I love Greta Van Fleet because they have a hard rock blues driven sound which, I'm sorry, has been absent for nearly 40 fucking years. I'm sorry if the following sentence offends you but the music made nowdays, pretty much from everyone is absolute crap. It's soulless, heartless garbage made by people who realized that being a musician pays them better than being a damn convenience store clerk. I'll take GVF over the majority of artists today any day, and that is including Royal Blood whom I really, really like.

@@dudebr0599 it’s true tho and I’m not ashamed to say it, music died a long time ago. If you think otherwise your just a regular dumbass. End of story.
@@dudebr0599 let me clarify my comment, it’s not that there isn’t any good music in 2021, I exaggerated a little when I said no good music has been made since 1980. There has been good music, but it is extremely hard to find and that’s a shame. The mainstream bands nowadays don’t do it for me, they are all homogenized, sound extremely manufactured and industrial. Like they were made with a stamp press in some kind of factory. There are some good bands like Goose, Uncle Lucius, Black Country Communion and a few others but in my personal opinion most of the music made post 1980 is regurgitated garbage.
@@dudebr0599 I like Royal Blood but to be honest, it really isn’t that different than anything else going on right now. They don’t stand out anymore like they used too.

Houses of the Holy is such a good record. And the one that really started broadening Zeppelin's sound.

Physical Graffiti is Led Zeppelin's Magnum Opus, on a level of experimentation and musicianship. HOTH is not far down from the best imo though, had some great songs.
Physical Graffiti is definitely their most eclectic one, and has a lot of my all-time favorites, but HOTH still reached in that direction while being more consistently good, with less filler. PT's length probably didn't help it in that regard, even though it's still a great listen all the way through.
every band that is “bringing back rock & roll” is just excessively derivative cosplay radio noise (Struts, GVF, etc.)

Naa, when it's a band, only the singer dies, so Fantano gonna have mercy and spare the remaining band members.
The thing that irritated me most about this album is that it's dad rock's savior, while bands like Raconteurs are subsequently ignored because their demographic is resistant to musical evolution even within their own favorite genres.
The elitism is just so damn blatant.
I love rock, but rock fans are fucking stupid. Rock musicians' resistance to change and insistence to make rock that sounds like" music from the good old days" is why it's not popular anymore.
Khadijah Johnson exactly. I’ve said the same thing many times. Rock “died” because it stopped innovating. Arguably the last wave of rock bands that did something out of the ordinary were those Nu metal bands. Say what you want about them, but they were doing something different and they were hated for doing so. Since those bands fell out of favor with the mainstream, there has been no new innovative type of rock that has emerged. Therefore rock is “dead”.

@Dan Burnt well, you haven't searched enough then...
You have good taste in music (minus GVF) but music can not REGRESS. Styles and new sounds music be created for music to progress forward. Same as Time is linear and in 1 direction, you cannot go backwards.
GVF is an abomination to those whom have taken years to progress music rather than live in the past. And it’s the duty of artists to both: not plagiarize, & to create new art.

what was the record company thinking when they signed this karaoke band? I do a pretty good Springsteen impersonation can I get a contract too?
There's more to it than that, but what the record label was thinking is "hmmm, dad rock is a really uncrowded niche right now and we could make serious money by investing in that niche."
And they were right
Unless you can actually sing, then no
The record company was thinking $$$$$. They're thinking .. Rock is dead!! We'll give this garage tribute band a contract and convince every 20 year old that they're something amazing. If they were all over weight ugly and balding no one would give a flying fuck about this band.

ripping off Zeppelin was already lame and passe when Wolfmother did it 15 years ago
Dude, how about Whitesnake and Kingdom Come in the late 80's? Shamelessly lame. Seems to be a reoccurring thing every so often that bands rip off Zeppelin LOL
Yeah. Ppl tend to forget about Wolfmother. They sounded more like Led Zeppelin than Greta does, and I dislike both bands (Greta & Wolf).
I consider the Wolfmother thing to have been an amalgamated rip - off of Cream, Sir Lord Baltimore, and the first two Deep Purple albums, but a lot of people who know more about Zep than I do are saying Zep, so it's fairly likely to be true.
A certain Mike Patton video comes to mind whenever I hear or read something related to Wolfmother. Will people ever learn?
