    Great topic and great video. I'm from the East Coast and grimey Boom Bap East Coast Hip-Hop is my bread and butter. BUT I absolutely adore Southern and West Coast Hip-Hop and other regions as the Midwest for that matter. I own a plethora of non East Coast albums and I always been this way since the age of 10 in '95. I see East Coast bias still going on today. Which is pathetic in my personal opinion. This is the main reason why we cover all coasts on my pod, Also Ghetty Green getting two mics and a half in The Source is lame. Such a joke lol.

    Yes , because Southern and West Coast rap is more based in feeling, direct messaging over "wordplay", and musicality. Southern folks are surrounded by a wide range of music from birth, and are informed by southern music that is often all about difficulty, and repeated phrases meant to cause an emotional response. NYC are overly infatuated with hearing themselves talk.

    In the current era I've notice East Coast bias most prevalently in the ranks of all-time greatest album and artist list of most major publications. Those list usually rank too many New York artist or albums too high on their list, while placing more deserving artist or albums from other regions too low.

    I'm in my 40s I have a lot to say on this topic.
    Been listening to Hip Hop since maybe 81-82. I grew up in Florida in the 80s & 90s so I think I have a fair take on this.
    New York is the mecca, New York is the template, New York is the genesis but New York people are arrogant. Florida was filled with them. I think alot of the attitude towards NYC music has a lot to do with the people from there. All the music sounds great to a kid who grew up in Florida. We had 2 Live Crew, Poison Clan, Magic Mike & Jam Pony mixtapes.We loved it, it felt like home. The part of that love that made it not fun was the reactions from the New York transplants towards anything that wasn't from the 5 boroughs. To this day I feel like most of the 2 Pac fans are deep down New York haters. I think their hatred toward how New York cats behave goes hand in hand for their love for 2Pac.

    • @Malcolm_LaFlare
      @Malcolm_LaFlare Рік тому +3

      2Pac became a big star after going to jail for the rape thing. I always viewed 2Pac as a west coast artist and never knew he originated from the east mainly because of that Get Around song he did with Shock G (RIP). I grew up in south Georgia so I know about 2 Live Crew, we had a lot of Bootyshake music up here too. Big Gipp from Goodie Mob is a prime example of what you speak on about how many heads dont like New York because of how New York treats everyone else.

    Bro, I love this and this needs over 100 million views. The south been running the game since 1997 and it started with Master P and no limit.people don’t realize that the majority of black Americans live in the south, and that’s what we wanted to listen to. We didn’t have a voice in the beginning but when we got our Voice, you couldn’t tell us nothing.if you look at it, the south makes the most money and it sets the trend. before New York made the most money and set the trend but since 1997, we took over, now the only thing New York really has is politics. Meaning the media .they still won’t give usrespect. you will never see a southern rapper in peoples top 10 or best album of the year or anything like that besides, maybe Lil Wayne Outkast or Scarface. but yes there is bias towards the south. But you can’t do anything about it in the end .the south would never fall because there’s too many Black people living in the south and that’s what we know and love and we like to listen to people who sound like us.

      I had some issues of Murder Dog forsure. I still saw aspects of this bias during the verzuz battles to be honest. The lox and dipset got way more views and attention than Ugk vs. Ball and G. Now could that have been because the UGK verzuz happened later on in the verses when less people watched them? or was it because Ugk and ball and G don’t get as much love outside their region? Or was it because they aren’t considered as lyrical? 🤔 I got all these questions lol

  • @shawnorjiakor
    @shawnorjiakor Рік тому +1

    Great topic and video. First and foremost... every fan (from any region) has a bias. It's normal and it's not always a bad thing because people should have some pride from where they're from or the lane they love the most.
    With that being said... My answer is somewhat yes even though Southern bias takes the cake for several years now. While I do believe the East Coast has some validity with their biasness, the region has became a contradiction of itself while upholding their status as the foundation. There are lots of examples where and why they're at this current position.

    • @hip-hophistorybuff
      @hip-hophistorybuff  Рік тому +1

      Thanks bro. No doubt. I hear what you are saying about a southern bias being more prevalent in more recent years. I feel that comes from younger folks and casuals who want a certain type of vibe. They aren’t likely to want to hear more traditional sounds, as they consider it old.

  • @ampereira8

    People from a certain generation will always have an "East Coast" bias because...that's the sound that we grew up on, so for us, even if we listen to modern hip hop, we might have preference towards something like the Griselda sound.
    That being said, Outkast is great, Snoop is great, Cube is great, and if were to extend that conversation to a more modern league of rappers, Wayne is great, Game (as a rapper) is usually great, Kendrick is great... so that "bias" is more just where we believe that the foundation of our love for hip hop was built on. (IMO)
