    To see an insert go for that long in that amount of material is amazing to me. One of the jobs I work on I have to switch the insert every single piece, 6 sided insert and 42 pieces to make. That was an annoying job to say the least and could be done way better with an insert that's properly made for the material. But no, my employers and boss don't see a need to change their processes. They're a if it ain't broke don't fix it, but worst thing is that they don't do preventative maintenance on the machines because they have no one to do it. So when the machine goes down a whole bunch of jobs have to get pushed back due to fixing the machine.

    • @ChrisMaj
      @ChrisMaj  3 роки тому +4

      Yeah, you are right about having the right insert for the job. At least we don't do any exotic metals.

    The degree of precision you achieve on a piece as massive as this is spectacular. It's obvious you're a master at your craft. Thanks for providing these videos. It would interesting to see something like this piece actually installed wherever it goes, though I'm sure that happens a long ways from where you might have access.

      Sometimes I think I would like to do the sort of jobs you show us and other times I quail at the dangers of just moving mass like that around.
      I mean, what could possibly go wrong..
      Right?
      Hats off to ya!

      @@captcarlos Yeah, there's always that thought in the back of my mind what if. What if that big ass piece comes out of the chuck, what if I slip and fall in. There are all these what ifs. After 5 years vtl still scares me. I prefer lathes.

    At 4:30 and 10:55 it looks like you sure got close with your clearance between the part and the tool holder, you sure got your stickout lengths spot on! That part sure has a lot going on. Do you have any idea what those grooves were that you cut with the threading tool? Grease grooves possibly? That long boring bar sure was crazy, did you have any issues with chatter or does it stay pretty rigid for you? Thanks for sharing and great video as always!

    cnc machining is amazing, 2d is easy , 3d and learning cad cam is a challange, I owned a machine shop for 5 years and hated small business, now I machine for fun and make fixtures for friends , no fun standing in front of a cnc makining the same parts for a month , now only time and material or free parts for friends !!!
