Praying to Mary (or any other saint) isn't exactly praying to them as a deity but asking them to help you in your prayers to god.

A good example is how in the Hail Mary's lyrics, the only wish that appears is:
"Pray for us, sinners, now and at the hour of our death."
It doesn't say "save us, sinners", "forgive us, sinners", or something that implies she has the power of a deity. Her figure is respected and people ask for her blessing and prayer as they could ask any of their friends or family.

However, it would be nice to have them do a little research, especially if they plan on making Taylor’s bible stories a re-occurring thing. It is always like this. When I as a Catholic discuss theology with Eastern Orthodox it's a battle. We are going back and forth throwing definitions, history, culture, sources etc at each other and they understand our beliefs, they just disagree with them.

    I'll summarize for you guys
    1. confession is so that priests can understand issues and vices within their community better and provide a private place for someone to speak to another person on actions they'd otherwise take to their grave. like almost all their duties, they're meant to make the process easier and more direct to a normal believer as they themselves are theologically educated community leaders.
    2. The Pope is a deeply educated person with decades of experience in the church who has gone through multiple ranks and a high majority vote from their peers to enter that position. they're trusted to use their understanding of the faith and their experience as a leader for the greater benefit of the church and function as the closest human representative of God. though Popes are considered fully human and fallible and are acknowledged as such.
    3. The church exists as a large central and almost corporate body mainly to help keep such a massive group grounded. Branch Davidians, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, The People's Temple etc. are all Protestant because when you alter and decay the faith it becomes easy to keep doing it. Catholicism would immediately strip the authority of any lone wacko trying to pull these stunts in their church.
    3. The style of dress is for ceremonial purposes, iconography and it helps divide rank. asking why they dress like that is like asking why humans use uniforms anywhere in any setting.
    4. Catholic priests in the modern day have far lower rates of CSA than Rabbi, Sheikhs, Protestant preachers, and almost any other religious group's respective clergy. the issue was dealt with in large part due to the church having the capacity to moderate itself. no institute is perfect, and that ever famous mini epidemic is a fine example of that.

No to point 3. Many, if not all, of those groups shouldn’t even be considered Christians. JWs for example don’t recognize Christ’s divinity and can’t be considered Christians. Also, the Bible itself shows corporate religious structures can’t be trusted to stay consistent and holy. What do you think the Pharisees were? You shouldn’t trust a man to guide the faith, only God. To put any man above yourself and venerate him is shameful, whether you recognize him as still human or not. Like they referenced in this clip, part of why Jesus came was to strip away the unnecessary rules imposed on the Jews before Him. So why then should we obey non-biblical rules after?

@@bakedhawaii Being a Christian who goes to a Catholic High School, it is not a braindead take. Obviously, Catholics wouldn't say they "worship" Mary. However, having observed many Catholics and Catholic traditions and prayer routines, Mary is prayed to far more often than God is prayed to. It isn't even close. Some church-approved prayers to her also included language that should be used when talking about Jesus, language that describes her as the hope of sinners and God's "pledge of salvation" to the world, etc. etc. On top of this already over-the-top language, the Hail Mary is prayed in my school way more often than any other prayer by a huge margin, and of course, the rosary, which is heavily endorsed by the Catholic Church, has many more Hail Marys than any other prayer. To any reasonable outsider, the focus clearly looks like it is on Mary and not Jesus, and when given the excuse that "Mary points to Jesus" it is nearly impossible to see how the language used and the focus on Mary is supposed to not primarily venerate Mary. Also, I haven't seen a single teacher in my whole school with pictures of Jesus up(beyond crucifixes), but many of them have Our Lady of Guadalupe or stuff like that. The devotion to Mary in the Catholic Church is very over-the-top, and since there is almost no focus on Jesus to even it out it is fair for anyone to think that Mary is the main focus. Even to the point that people can say that Catholics "worship" Mary, though you'll likely deny that to your grave.

    • @bakedhawaii
      @bakedhawaii 4 місяці тому +3

@@noahgochenour734 I probably will because I don't worship her? It's simple as "I respect Mary highly as the mother of God". I'm not looking for any more debate, because that's not my life, God bless my friend.

Fun fact: The first pope was St. Peter, one of the 12 apostles who was selected by Jesus to lead Christianity. Since then the average position has been held for 11 years and the predecessor history can be traced back directly to Jesus. This is why Catholicism makes up the largest group of Christians, but with the average rotation of the pope being about a decade, it's understandable why some feel as though the leadership within the religion can come off as not traditional enough or too traditional depending on the times.

Orthodox here 🙋‍♂️. In regards to the bit on confession...
No, the notion of abusing trust and dealing in spilt tea was not the purpose of going to a priest for confession. Although, im sure that HAS happened as we are all somewhat frail and temptable. In accordance with St James the Apostle's command that we "confess sins to one another that" we "may be forgiven", the original practice of confession wasn't to confess to God alone, but rather to confess publicky before the entire congregation. As you might imagine, this had some scandalous consequences at times when some very dastardly acts had been committed, especially when it involved several members of the congregation. So, rather than maintain that initial practice and overburden the average member of the congregation with the standard command not to judge but to forgive while also loading them up with some seriously strong tea about people they know and see regularly, the practice of confessing to the priests was instituted. The role of clergy(deacons included) was already in effect, so that transition was a simple one, and effective at fulfilling the goal of confession while severely limiting congregations being scandalized by other members' failings.

Praying to saints, venerating relics, and purgatory are all 1st century Christians beliefs.. Martin Luther removed the books pertaining to them.
Jesus breathed on the apostles saying “receive ye the Holy Ghost, whose sins are forgiven are forgiven, and those retained are retained. Catholic and Orthodox Churches have valid apostolic succession.. those churches have confession.
Ignatius of Antioch, who was a disciple of John and consecrated by Peter can clue us into what he learned from the apostles through his letters.. here’s his abridged writings.
    “Confess your sins in Church”
“Rome holds the presidency of Christianity”
    -and most importantly-
“Beware the heretics who don’t confess the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist, they will perish in their disputes”
Protestants will say Jesus was speaking metaphorically in John 6… yet John’s disciples (Ignatius and Polycarp) would deem you a heretic for not believing in the real presence of Christ.

Confession is not so the priest "can know sins and provide advice," that is just a helpful sub-product of the Sacrament. Us Catholics believe that Confession is necessary due to Jesus Christ setting it up in the New Testament after His resurrection.
Once Jesus returns to His disciples He breathes into them, and instructs them to go out a unbind individuals from their sin according to their judgement and ultimately God's (John 20:21-23). This can be assumed to be under the pretense that the confessor/sinner is truly penitent and not just trying to get a "get-out-of-Hell pass."
The reason that priests have this ability is due to apostolic succession. We believe that Jesus bestowed the title of Priesthood to the disciples during the last supper by washing their feet and instructing them to imitate the last supper (all of this is done in similarity and imitation of the Jewish "Priest's" role during passover).
Finally, confessions are not supposed to be done on the street loudly as the people in the video have stated. Confession is not a prideful display of piety. Confession is supposed to be done in private with the confessor and the priest. In fact, the priest is committing a mortal sin if he discusses what was said in confession and can be punished by the local diocese.
This comment is not meant to convince protestants but demonstrate that Catholics have extremely legitimate Biblical and traditional reasons for believing the things we do. Believe it or not, 2,000 years of self-reform and internal Theological debate will tend to make you form rationale for your doctrine.

To reject God is to reject goodness, love, truth, and to choose Hell. There's no limbo there where people who have died are waiting until the end times to enter into a state of rejecting God, they're already rejecting God. Indeed, the rejection itself is the essence of Hell. Hell isn't an arbitrary place of fire, its the state of totally rejecting God and the natural consequences of that choice.
On the topic of "physically dead" and "spiritually dead," this is where English is fun because we don't have a term that only means one or the other, we have to specify with "Spiritual." However, I urge you to reread John 3:16 and tell me that you honestly think it does not mean somebody in Heaven is not eternally alive. Especially considering other verses like Ephesians 2:1 "And you he made alive, when you were dead through the trespasses and sins." Different translations translate that second half as "dead in spirit" or "dead through your sins," but the idea is the same: That the people being spoken to are physically alive but spiritually dead. This split is also seen in Romans 8:13, "For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live." Except now the passage discusses how one who lives with God is alive spiritually in spite of the body. This split exists biblically, and it is biblical that living in God is how how one avoids true death, the death of the spirit.
Side note, I could say the same "twisting" criticism about people claiming that Jesus promising eternal life somehow did not actually mean eternal life. It goes both ways, so lets stay on point. Also, none of this changes that there is no difference between Grandma praying for you in her Kitchen or Grandma praying for you in Heaven. Indeed, according to James the prayers of the Righteous are powerful, and what people are more righteous than those with God in heaven?

@@Yo-0o0o0o0o The interesting part is that there are commands to pray for each other by St. Paul, there are mentions of the Saints praying to God in Heaven in Revelation, there are the previously mentioned verses regarding people being alive or dead in the spirit and the connection of that to being in hell, and then verses of how the saints in heaven are truly alive and thus not dead.
However. At the end point, there is no single command to either pray specifically to people in Heaven, nor a command against. We can piece together that people in Heaven are not dead, and thus infer that the command against necromancy does not apply, especially considering the context of necromancing spirits pulls people away from God while asking a saint to pray for you would pull you towards God. Yet there is no one line that says it verbatim. Meaning we need to interpret, meaning we need someone we can trust to teach us. Like Acts 8:31, "How can I know (What I am reading)? Unless someone teaches me." For you, you have been taught that "Prayers of righteous are the ones on Earth," where it never specifically says that. I have been taught the opposite, that this is not limited to the physical Earth. How do we know who's right?
I would claim the successor of Peter's authority with the guarantee of Matthew 16, and unbroken tradition of prayers to saints since Roman times, as my backing and teacher. What of you?

It does go to show that you can pretend to be some kind of "wholesome, ecumenical Sunday school teacher" and tread very carefully with getting things wrong about other religions, but you can easily drop the act and just agree to obviously blasphemous or incorrect characterizations of Catholicism and you can not feel that you need to be more careful (given that you have Catholic fans) or at least have the nuts to tell your cohosts to knock it off.
Whether Wendigoon is just a liar about his ecumenical attitude or is just a wimp is a 50/50.

Im not sure I follow the logic, the church has certainly made its mistakes but men making mistakes doesnt invalidate what the church is and continues to do, very strange analysis and honestly I'd like to know what has happened in each of their personal lives that has made them so anti God let alone Catholic, there's a lot of shade being thrown by someone who claims to not be religious, it's more than telling

It is the simplest thing to look up is that priests CAN'T break confessions. And they don't, if you tell a priest something outside of confession it's free game. So that defeats the point of control if you can't even tell another priest about what you heard in confession
