Hey guys, I recently saw a talk on youtube by Michael Knowles where he beautifully gave advice to a person who was experiencing a faith crisis. It was a political talk at a College campus and when they question came up, he gave a really Catholic faith-filled answer including encouraging the person to recite the prayer of St. Michael the Archangel. As a Latin American who immigrated to the USA as a child, we were always given a sip of wine on special occasions. The term "drinking" rings very bad in English-speaking countries. Do you drink? conjures up ideas of being a drunk, an alcoholic. Do I drink what? It's obvious that that first question has another dimension in America and the English countries. Perhaps a better way of asking would be "Do you abuse alcohol." That would be better understood.

Fr. Ripperger who quotes the Cannon, says that smoking is NOT a sin, alcohol, not a sin, and CAN be if you refuse it based on the health benefits of say, a little red wine, etc..
Also as an exorcist, he said he likes to unwind with scotch and cigars. Obviously it's an external so it's corresponding virtue is Modesty and moderation (just as langauge is, Aquinas says language should aim at the truth). And why? Because he refuses to let demons rob him of normal life.
The great thing bout being Catholic is we are not gnostics and take part of the gods creation. Italians will smoke, not going to stop them. If you don't stop because it's effects other more important. Love the show guys.

Great show! Really enjoyed the discourse on this episode. It was definitely clarifying for someone like me, who enjoys a drink on occasion, appreciates the natural incense of tobacco smoke, and is perhaps a little too fond of crass language. I think it's important to emphasize that moderation rules the day in all things, and as long as we have an eye to giving thanks for the gifts of alcohol and tobacco used rightly, we should find it difficult to stray too far down the path to perdition.

My husband drinks and swears and used to smoke and do “light” drugs. Although I wish he would ditch alcohol and swearing, he has holy qualities that don’t come naturally to me and visa versa. I don’t drink, smoke, have never done drugs and I refrain from swearing I don’t even drink coffee and very little soda. These things are easy for me not to do. It doesn’t necessarily make me holier. Honestly, my husband is probably more saintly then me and he doesn’t even practice Catholicism as much as I do, and I love Catholic content. I think Jesus would appreciate a joyful man who’s a little rough around the edges. It’s almost like I’m his wife to help refine his obedIence towards Christ. And visa versa. Very humbling

In New Orleans we have a lot of Catholic parishes. My school had a monseigneur, who had a reputation among the students for being strict. BUT, that was in contrast to the other priest, who was from Ireland, thick accent, always happy and fun. We'd see him outside the corner store drinking and smoking with other guys and he'd excitedly tell us "hello". Both great men, but one was considerably more extroverted.

I just started thinking about the old fashioned swearing. In Romeo and Juliet Mercuric shouts “A plague on both your houses!” He is cursing the Capulets and the Montagues.
There is also G.B.Shaw’s play Pygmalion. Professor Higgins has used Eliza, his student, to win a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering. Despite the odds he made the poor Cockney flower seller into a beautifully dressed, proper lady who speaks upper class English. As per his cold nature he casually talks about wanting to discard her because he has no use for her. Eliza is worried about her future. She can’t go back to standing on the curb selling violets. She becomes enraged and hurls Higgins’ bedroom slippers at him. She shouts “There are your slippers. And there. Take your slippers; and may you never have a day’s luck with them!”
There is no crassness or profanity in these examples. Imagine if people walked around saying thing like that now.

Each one of these "vices" including the musical choices, must be approached from various cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic stand points. Rap and metal (although the later is not my preference) can also be as intricate and complex as Brahams just as some classical music is well not. The same thing goes for weed, there haven't really been as many studies on it but it's illegal status actually has a racially charged history. Similarly, language is ever evolving, and there was some mention of this, the meaning behind the usage of the is more important than the word.

I've heard both the Fathers cuss, I was surprised, but it didn't stick with me what exactly they said. I understand that sometimes there's the only certain words that fit the conversation to make the point to certain audiences.

Hi there. I would like to make two short comments. First I that God made man in his image and that we are to take care of ourselves the best way we can. The second is your show reminds me of group of guys in basement man cave. This takes me back to the 60s in our apartment when I was ten years old and my father would have his buddies over for a penny anny poker game around the dining room table. They would have a couple of smokes, drinks, and laughs. I would ask you guys to invite a few women on occasion to your show BUT I fear it would spoil the atmosphere. Thanks for all your information especially on the saints. Take care and God bless.

Just like he said, you can have a small amount of marijuana without going too crazy. I always show up to work and am active in my parish while being someone who uses edibles in small dosages for medicinal reasons.

Whenever I use a cuss word it's when I step my toe or something like that i'm not cussing you know one out. When i'm driving and I accidentally cut some enough and that person sometimes gives me the middle finger I don't do it back to them but I just wave them i'm sure that makes a mad I don't do it back to them.

    Great episode.
But I still don't know why should I drink alcohol. I mean, one thing would be to think that it is bad, but I really never feel like it. It's expensive, it makes me sleepy, the taste isn't nice (more like an acquired taste) and has some other side effects (beer makes me want to pee all the time, tequila gives me a headache the next day, a little whiskey is never little enough), and most of all, it is expensive. Many alcoholic drinks also have a fizzy quality, which I also don't like at all. So, is it ok if instead of finding a balance I just don't drink all together (except for when I have to accept certain invitations)?
On a side note, why did you all react so strongly to an Irish alcoholics patron but no one even blinked when Colombia and Peru were so directly associated with bad drugs? You do know you have an international audience, right? (or maybe not yet in 2018?)
This was an interesting topic, and I loved the part where Ryan D talked about his personal experience and then F. Richard commented on it too. Sometimes I wish there was a woman in this podcast too, but you three sometimes also say some really beautiful words.
