Benefit was so popular with us kids in 1971 !! We were used to the U.S. version ( song line up ). I think I told you before.. I had dinner on two occasions with Martin Barre in the late 90's at North Lake Tahoe. Memorable conversation.. ✌️

Very well done, sir. That album is deceivingly tricky, as your left wrist can attest.
I’m surprised that you said that Ian doesn’t like that album - Benefit has grown on me so much over the years that I now put it in my top 5 Tull albums. It’s different enough from Stand Up that I think it stands quite nicely on its own.

Very well done sir. Regardless of Ian's thoughts on the album I have always liked it. This song and Teacher stood out for me. It sounds a little more rock than Stand Up but a bit less pronounced than Thick As A Brick. It gave a hint to what was to come even as late as Minstrel in the Gallery. I've been a Tully for over 50 years and Benefit is in my top 5. Thank you.

    Excellent Stewart.
I always loved Benefit - and even went off JT a bit after that great album [Glenn's departure].
I hope you have decent, playable action on your guitar. If not, I can feel the muscle strain from all your great accompaniment. I find most acoustics to have awkward playability.
Maybe I've not spent enough yet!

Another great job, Stewart. Hitting on all cylinders- this was a challenging one to do. Got all the subtleties, again. Nice vocals, too. I agree Benefit is underrated. It has some great tunes- rock/ blues transition time for Tull.

Benefit along with Stand Up and Aqualung are my favorite Tull albums. While Ian thought they were "too" conventional, the brilliance of Benefit led to Aqualung. Martin Barre came into his own and became one of rocks most underrated guitar players. But his guitar became the driving force behind Ian's music. That said, your rendition--I can't call it a cover because that cheapens what you do--is brilliant and a wonderful addition to any acoustic guitar players repertoire. Just brilliant Stewart. As I've said many times the nuance of your playing and the attention to the detail of the song should make any Tull fan happy.
thanks again for playing one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums. 👏👏👏
And the sore left hand (mine is my right) is a sign that you are putting everything into the song. Lately, I've been working on some Beatle rhythm parts of John and my wrist and hand hurt like the devil after practice!

I'm a Tully since 2012. My record shop dealer got me into Tull: it all started when I heard him talking about their fifth album ('Thick As A Brick'), this went on for a couple of days, then I thought: 'I definitely have to check them out!', so I decided to kick it all off by buying that very record. I wasn't aware, obviously, that 'Thick As A Brick' was to become my absolute n. 1 all-time favourite Tull album ever, followed by 'Benefit' (which is my second favourite Tull album. It features 'Inside', which is my absolute n. 1 all-time favourite Tull song ever!) and 'The Broadsword And The Beast' (my third favourite [or joint second favourite, if you prefer] Tull album. Great job! Greetings from Italy!!

I was maybe age 12 or 13 when I was hearing Teacher on the local radio stations - and the rest of the album on my older sister's 8-tracks :D Always thought of it as a being every bit as popular as any other rock bands at the time. Nice version, Stewart. And, as always, thank you for posting!

Well done again, sir! I strongly disagree with Ian's opinion of this album. What does HE know anyway?! 😁 If I was ever forced to pick some favorite Jethro Tull albums (please don't make me!), this would be included. And it's arguably their best. I've heard that expressed many times. It's difficult to imagine the pre Aqualung times of Tull! Hey, I wouldn't mind seeing you make some non-musical videos as well. Maybe covering topics such as YOUR favorites or album rankings. Just an idea. Fall is nearly upon us. I start some heavy duty Tull listening soon! Cheers! Stay well.

Ian Andersen didn't like "Benefit'? It was like "Close to the Edge" and "Foxtrot" to me once. The perfect prog rock trifecta. (Even Metallica knows, " but I could have been wrong.")
