    One of my favorite LF YT channels and to pull off a hour video with no field footage...bravo.

    Thanks for answering my question Chris, I appreciate it. I did see Nick's video and book marked that page. I've been hesitant to buy lenses from Japan, but may give it a shot. Keep up the good work.

      Of course, thanks for the submission! I was a little hesitant myself at first, especially since it can be so cost prohibitive to ship something back for a return, but I've had pretty good luck so so far 🤞🏻

    Daaaam, thoroughly enjoyed and fascinated by your ramblings.
    I kind of get your analyzing the shit out of everything, mainly with B&W developing, while at the same time think you should just pick something and work round that.
    Then on diffraction and sharpness you say Mehh, it is what it is LOL
    I totally agree on that and on just getting film developed, life's too short.
    On conditions I have 2 local shots I've done time after time and never got the A1 conditions, only to see someone do their first visit and get the conditions I dream off, so you never know.
    Off to watch the favorite shots now!

      Haha thanks Andrew! I suppose we all have our things we worry too much about, myself included. Perhaps there's a resolution for the new year in there somewhere for me..

    Happy New Year Chris! The Q&A is a great addition and I hope it becomes more than a once a year event. I always find something new to "noodle on" from you! I understand your B&W perspective and recognizing the time needed to do it justice. It has been my focus for many, many years and mix my own developers from scratch to manage yet another variable! Apologies for being late to the Patreon Party for best of 2022 - I somehow missed the message on voting, but rest assured my choice was the same. The leaf litter amongst the rocks was 2nd, Narrows 3rd. I tend to favor the localized transient images that may never be seen again over locations with scenes that can be re-visited. I am looking forward to sharing your journey through 2023.

      Thanks Jeff! Agreed and I think as long as there's interest it would be fun to incorporate more Q&A style content in the future, it was certainly fun to make! The Patreon poll was my fault, it was a bit of a last minute idea and next time I'll be sure I give a lot more time and notification, apologies for that.

    Happy new year, Chris, and thanks for all the videos in 2022. I hope you do get your Arca Swiss F-Line 4 x 5 some day. A couple of things occurred to me while watching. First, when developing colour sheet film there's much less of the variability yo mention, so the results tend to be more consistent. (Worth a try?) Second, I didn't hear anyone asking whether you might one day consider moving up to 8 x 10., not because it's better but because that's the usual progression.

    • @ChrisDarnell
      @ChrisDarnell  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Bernard! I think there will be an attempt at some point to process some color film, probably starting with C-41 and seeing how much of that I can destroy before moving on to E6, haha. If for nothing else it would be interesting to see what I can learn in the process. I would also love to try shooting some limited stuff on 8x10, but to be honest the price of film is really becoming a barrier for me in that regard. I wouldn't say it's unlikely at all that an 8x10 camera will show up in a video sometime, but it might be a little bit before one does.

    Just catching up from the holidays. I was watching this while developing a roll of Provia 400X from Xmas (still a few rolls left).
    1. Cinematography - watch Paper Moon.
    2. Dream film - Kodak VS. VS stood for Vivid Saturation. The colors were mind blowing; I recently shot the last roll :-(.
    3. Medium Format - Baby Graflex. I'd take it over a 6x7 slr, mainly because I'll actually carry it. And you can shoot 6x9.
    4. Shooting Ikons? Like a 532/16?
    5. Great pictures.

    Fabulous images. My favorites where the two images from Norway. (Maybe it's because I am 1/4 Norwegian). ;-)

    I discovered your channel just under a month ago and really enjoy it, many thanks!
    I’ve been considering a Garmin InReach and I’m wondering if you have any experience with how well it connects to satellites. I realize that it won’t connect if a person is deep in a tight slot canyon, but wonder about some of the narrow washes you get into. I live near Zion and I’d like to go further from the roads and popular trails, but need something like the InReach to send my track out for safety reasons.
    I look forward to your future videos and would love to tag along for a day next time you’re in Zion. I’m purely DSLR (having shot a lot of Velvia 35mm years ago).

    • @ChrisDarnell
      @ChrisDarnell  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Keith! In truth I'm pretty new to my InReach, I've never really tried to use mine in narrow areas but that's something I should try out for sure. It's been pretty reliable anywhere I have a view of the sky though, sometimes it takes a second to connect and you certainly aren't going to surf the web with it but I have pretty good confidence in its ability to call in the cavalry if I ever need it to.

    Wait why is Veliva 100 illegal to buy in the US?

    • @ChrisDarnell
      @ChrisDarnell  Рік тому

      Unfortunately there's some chemical that I cannot remember the name of that is used in the manufacturing of Velvia 100, and although it's trace amounts of it the EPA banned it outright in the US in 2021, making it illegal to sell it here 😕
