  • Graflok roll film adapter and a Chamonix 4x5 -
    In this episode I shoot three compositions with my Horseman 6x12 film back on my Chamonix 45F-2 4x5 field camera, one on FujiFilm Velvia 50 and two on Ilford Delta 100 black and white negative film.

    Very Cool, I like the 150mm abstract shot the best!!

    Loving this series Chris.
    Hey cool, no light leaks with this back!!
    I’m surprised that I prefer the less intense red of the pair from the maples.
    The hole in the wall shots, I know that I’d be trying to frame in the right hand entrance… you’re a stronger man than me to keep that out 😉
    I’d also have been too tempted by the colours in the honeycomb shot, but your choice for black and white was great… they remind me of b&w satellite footage of the tanneries in Fez
    Really appreciate the effort you put into bringing this to us.
    B.

    I think you see in black and white more than you think.
    Maybe in the hole one you could get more details in the dark, but either way's the composition is very strong in that pic!!

    The shot with the maples is great; that's a favorite composition of mine. Your film back has inspired me. I got a bottle of neon orange flourescent paint. Let's see if that helps dark slide handling.

    I really like the BW pattern photos. The 75 mm framing is more to my liking. Keep up the good work!

    We have a lot of sandstone along the coast here and I sometimes see that waffle pattern. I’ve often wondered what causes it in some areas and not others. Great video and images, as always.

    Nice one Chris. Liked the B&W images more. I had the exact same set up (I think N2 with Horseman Back which really well made). I ended up selling it as it was not used for a long time.

    Oh, I really like the 6x12 format. Makes me want to dust off the Crown Graphic and pick up a back for it. The first image really captures the feel of being in the wash. Well done. Of the three b/w I'm leaning toward the 75mm image. I get a sense of a rock comet slicing through the striations. We're out of this damn snow tomorrow and off to Death Valley. Maybe we'll see you there?

      Thanks Frank! Hopefully you had some luck in DV, unfortunately I have to miss it this year in place of another adventure I'm preparing for and couldn't do them both. I imagine all the winter storms have made for a lot of great opportunities this year though, I have to admit I'm a little bummed I couldn't swing it 😕

    The dead log shot early in the video was very nice. The combination of elements , rock, log, trees changing was just enough without causing distraction. Sometimes on panos, the width can lead to "too much" but in this case was perfect. It was my favorite of the series I think.

    • @ChrisDarnell
      @ChrisDarnell  Рік тому

      Thanks Philip! I totally agree, it can be pretty hard to compose for all that width at times and I certainly don't get it right all the time, but having a dedicated format for it has made it a bit easier to try to be more intentional with it at least!

    Thanks for the video.
    I would love to have a 6x12 back for my 4x5 inch view camera. However, for the small amount of 6x12 images I capture, I am better off cropping a 6x12cm image from a 4x5 inch sheet of film.

    I love the 6x12 format. I like the two images you took of the maple trees. Velvia 50 is my favorite chrome film, it produces such saturated colors, especially in the blue/green part of the spectrum. Back when I was shooting it before the advent of digital manipulation, underexposing it by 1/3 stop could often work in your favor. I have a 4x10 camera, but it suffers from the same issues as you were talking about with the 4x5. I really, really love the 6x17 format, but both the old Fuji cameras and the new Chinese 6x17 backs are more than I'm willing to spend on them right now. I might see if I can build a 4x5 reducing back for the 4x10 that will also hold a 6x12 back.

    • @ChrisDarnell
      @ChrisDarnell  Рік тому

      Thanks Tom! Agreed, it's really tough to beat Velvia. I have noticed my equivalent exposures on V50 can often look slightly darker than expected, I might have to try the +1/3 trick, particularly on lower dynamic range scenes. 4x10 is a really interesting format; I always thought if I ever jump to 8x10 it would be fun to try the half a dark slide trick and give it a go. I definitely understand the cost prohibitiveness of the 6x17 format; even my 6x12 back was more than I wanted to spend at the time but it's really been a lot of fun to use

    Oh the honeycomb or "tafoni" if you're into your geology :-) Watching the side by side of the film you probably heard me scream it's the 150, it has to be the 150, stop wasting our time with the 75! Then the processed image and,,, it's a coin toss LOL OK the 75! as it seems to come to an end in a natural way on the right of the frame.
    I'm not so keen on the web pattern but the colours with the log well lush! A good set.
    Nice seeing the 6x12, I've been thinking about giving that route a try. Cheers.

      @ChrisDarnell  Рік тому

      Haha, thanks Andrew! I went back and forth quite a bit myself while I was shooting the scene so I just did both, ha. 6x12 has been quite a bit of fun, not too skinny but just enough it seems.

    Love the 612 format.
    Had a Linhof Technorama 612pc2 back in the day. The Schneider 65mm super angulon lens was always super soft at the edges and when I had it looked at it turned out one of the elements was put in around the wrong way. Probably a rare occurrence one would hope.

    • @ChrisDarnell
      @ChrisDarnell  Рік тому

      That's super interesting! It would probably never have occurred to me that would be the problem and I bet I would have replaced the lens thinking it was trash, haha!

    Been enjoying your Zion series, thanks! On the last photo I think that I prefer the 75mm shot but both are very appealing. Love the 6x12 format, I have a darkslide that I cut in half but it is kinda fiddly to use, the Horseman back would be much easier.

    Good afternoon Chris. Sorry for getting to the video late, but I'm glad I did. Those B&W shots are nice. The last pair would be something for a large print, especially the wider fov version, at 24x48, it would draw the viewer across the microcosm of textures. Simply stunning, and a solid candidate for best of 23.

    • @ChrisDarnell
      @ChrisDarnell  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Paul, I'd absolutely love to see a 24x48! That's something I've been exploring a little since finding a wide format printer that handles roll paper isn't too terribly difficult these days; that would be pretty killer for these more panoramic style formats!

    Really enjoyed that first shot with the log, Chris. The next shot, well I never was a big fan of the Hole In The Wall gang. Your last two with the waffle patterns were really great in B&W and I have to go with 75mm as it seemed to tell more of a story of the location and setting. Keep up the wonderful work!

    Of the last two I think I like the 150mm image better. On the 75mm shot there is a seemingly empty area in the lower right that grabbed my eye and wouldn’t let it go. The 150mm image was all pattern with no empty spot.

    Love all three shots.
    About the third one I prefer the 150mm because the contrast between the general pattern from left to right and the smaller orthogonal details: IMHO this contrast gives me a strong sense of movement, almost like the subject is been reaped apart.

    I like the composition - light to dark, alive to decaying. I'm always impressed with your patience and marvel at the time you spend scouting. I do have a question - what scanner do you use? I am looking to invest in one for my classroom and would like to hear your thoughts. Thanks and keep it up.

    • @ChrisDarnell
      @ChrisDarnell  Рік тому

      Thanks Douglas, that's very kind! I use an Epson Perfection V850 flatbed along with the SilverFast 9 software and I've been really happy with it. I know there are other scanners out there that might handle 120 film better but for sheet film it seems the V700 through V850 scanners are really popular.

      Understandable; it can certainly take time to get all the necessary gear together. My first couple outings I only had one lens (my Fujinon 180mm) and a few holders though, so you can definitely get by with the minimum!

    Thought I was watching Ben Horne for a second there. I'm sure he walked passed the log scene in one of his video. Lovely velvia colour with that reflected light. I used to always fire the shutter several times before I took the first shot, if fact when I was choosing the lens. The mechanical shutter used to always stick. It might be my perception but the Black n White negatives look a bit thin, why didn't the shutter stick on them? They could have done with it. 🤣 Still using a grey card, try a White card and give it 2⅓ stops more.

    • @ChrisDarnell
      @ChrisDarnell  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Andrew! I'm positive he did, Ben and I were there at the same time this year. I like to test fire as well, usually to be confident the preview shutter is closed but in this case it would fire just fine and then stick during the exposure, haha. Agreed, the delta negs might be a little thin but I also overexposed the light table video, that probably makes it look worse than it is 😣

    Why do you have a recess board on the lens? Does it really need it?

    • @ChrisDarnell
      @ChrisDarnell  Рік тому

      Thanks Sergio! On the Chamonix I don't think it actually needs the recessed board as much, but on my older Toyo it does give me better range in my front movements since the standards aren't quite as compact as the Chamonix. That's also just the board that the lens came mounted in so I left it that way.
