    I’m a graphic designer and luckily have the means to afford one. I ordered one and look forward to it, I’ve never had an Apple desktop product before. It’ll help me with my remote work and my personal work and in 5K no less. I know there are cheaper options out there but it’ll pay for itself in time

      Designer here as well, I think it’s difficult for non-designers to appreciate how useful it is to work on native 4k content while keeping lots of ui on screen. I’d never recommend this monitor to any of my family or friends, but for my work the increase in ease of work is invaluable

      @@MattStefely I’m not a designer but I bought the 5K studio display. I don’t understand how most people don’t see the benefit it’s much sharper, all the 4K moniters look atrocious in terms of sharpness especially when you scale the interface smaller. They end up not looking anywhere near the same as the Retina display or XDR display on the MacBooks

    UA-camr Rene Ritchie apprently asked Apple what the reason was, and he explained their response this way: Basically there weren't any plug standards that are thin enough to fit into the Studio Display's chassis so they had to engineer a thinner plug to put into it and thinner plug also meant it would be more fragile so to prevent users from damaging the power cord they stated that the power cord is not removable instead, doesn't mean you can't go to an Apple Store and get it fixed though.

      If Apple just copy from what they did on the M1 iMac (thinner than Studio Display), definitely could avoid such controversy and made it feel more premium.

      @@RunForPeace-hk1cu i knew the difference, but still studio display could opt for DC input solution, it’s not like the power isn’t enough to charge a MacBook through usb c, LG ultrafine ergo already achieved this.

      This is common sense I can’t believe he had to ask apple for that one. The monitor is too thin for volex. Every prior Cinema Display that hasn’t had Volex has had an external brick.

    I'd like a Studio Display and a 14" M1 Max MacBook Pro. To me that combo is unbeatable. I want my laptop to be as small as possible but be as big as possible as a desktop. The benchmarks 14 vs 16 are so close that I think there's no downside.

    • @brad1785

      Yes! So happy that the M1 enables the smaller MacBook Pro to be equivalent to the larger one after all these years of it being inferior (in terms of power).

    Studio Display - @Olier you are right (mostly - see below) that the SD was designed for, and appeals to, those who value resolution and Apple-like build quality. More precisely, the important parameter is pixel density, or resolution (e.g., 5k), related to size of the display. For those who are sensitive to this it is not enough to specify only the resolution. If you need or want Apple's >200 pixels per inch pixel density, 4k resolution is adequate for a 24" or smaller display. 5k is needed for a 27" display and 6k resolution for a 32" display. For me and many others, fast refresh rate is not important. A high pixel density display at a certain cost is better than a high pixel density AND high refresh rate display at a higher cost.

    I've been using a Dell U2720Q for the last few years which has been great - 4k / USB-C PD / HDMI / DP etc but it can't match a MacBook for colour at all. I thought I'd grab a (Studio Display)but I always told myself the next monitor would be 120Hz at least...
    Apple nailed the design though, it's stunning and 5k scales so well, everything just feels a little 'off' on a 4k monitor.

    • @alexh2665
      @alexh2665 2 роки тому +1

      I wouldn’t bet on waiting for it to be 120hz. The issue is you can’t output 120hz on thunderbolt atm let alone on a 27 or even 32 inch monitor

    Studio Display! Indeed, it's so frustrating that other manufacturers lack the materials and build quality. The display market is so disappointing for a Photographer/Colourist. I decided to get rid of my previous monitor when I bought the 16" M1 MacBook Pro. Of course, 16" aren't comparable with 27" or more on a desktop. However, I value colour accuracy and build in presets for soft-proofing much more than screen real estate. Great video!

    Great follow up video to the unboxing one. I was really curious where the vesa mount would line up given the Apple stand was hinged to the bottom. Definitely not a deal breaker. I would recommend getting a more premium arm. I have the one in this video and its pretty basic. Try the North Bayou one that allows for full range of motion.

    Studio Display - Nice job! Finding a new display to go with my new Mac Studio is turning out to be the most frustrating shopping experience ever. It's a great irony, considering how many good or better displays there are in the world today, but because of the limitation of macOS's handling of native PPI's that aren't in the ~110 or ~220 range is creating a two-faceted, terrible problem for me: 1) Every other scaling option aside from the Displays system pref option or options (can be either 1 or 2 of them for a given display) which options equate to using full native screen PPI or exactly half that, causes (by strong evidence) a huge, continuous labor to be performed by the GPU of the machine, and 2) Bitmaps in both the OS and in Photoshop (and little doubt user images in all applications) get scaled by the OS! The OS uses bilinear interpolation to scale them so they grow (or shrink) as the UI does. Bilinear causes the most blurring of any scaling algorithm. Many people don't notice their pictures getting blurred, but the careful photographers who work hard to optimize sharpness need to see un-bastardized pixels in order to sharpen them just right, not to mention enjoy them to their fullest while working with them. So that means if you choose any 4K, 27" or 32" display the only macOS scaling options that you can choose that avoid the scaling problems are ones that either make the entire UI much too large or much too small. (But both of those classes of displays do offer those two choices -- the 27" Studio Display only has the one scaling option at which the scaling problems don't occur - and it's the one where you see the UI as though it were being shown on a 109 ppi display, so everything looks about the right size, just a little bit on the small side. So there are darn close to zero ways to get things to look right with the benefit of high res (Retina) pixels that make text look great without messing with our photographs' detail: Studio Display, LG 27" 5K, and Pro XDR 6K Display. Otherwise to avoid scaling you need to use a display that's in the 100 to 110 native PPI range. Even that option is very limited, because most displays that are in that range don't come with full P3 gamuts, let alone full P3 and Adobe RGB gamuts, or USB-C (to carry DisplayPort data) or Thunderbolt 3, or superior contrast, or special screen coatings, or many of the other features of high-end imaging displays, including smartly designed software to enable calibration to exactly your preferred white point and luminosity, the display's native gamut, and so on. The EIZO CG2700S is one, but it's $2,500 and you won't get picture-by-picture, as you're losing out on the promise of beautifully clean, Retina-style text rendering. Apple - fix this huge oversight now! You're messing up my whole new Mac Studio experience badly! Allow for unscaled bitmaps in at least four monitor PPI ranges: ~110, 140, 164, and 220. It's not fair to force our experience with the vast majority of the newer displays on the market to be degraded in these ways.

    • @snailer06
      @snailer06 2 роки тому +1

      6K better? Not really, 5K is the native resolution of the Mac Studio's graphics (5120 x 2880), too so any other resolution is scaled.

    There is a big issue with the display that reviews have not yet addressed. No its not the unacceptably horrendous webcam. The issue is that the monitor runs its own operating system (IOS) to manage the camera, microphone and speakers. Like any device running a consumer based operating system, it can't be run indefinitely without restarting it or you run into issues. If you don't restart your iPad or iPhone for weeks or months you will eventually experience all kind of issues. I got my studio display on March 18. yesterday my camera started acting up, then the microphone and speakers would stop working sporadically. After hours with Apple support it was determined the monitor needs to restart. BUT there is no way to do it, it has no power button and no way to actuality shut it down or reboot/restart properly. So the only way to do restart the display is to unplug it from the power source for a minute and plug it back in. We did so and its working fine again. However, doing it that way means you are crashing the build-in OS rather than properly restarting it. That of course can potentially damage the display just like crashing your computer every time you want to restart it.

    I sold my iMac 27", so having 5k is a must-have for me as I upgrade from Intel to Apple SoC. The new Studio Display is noticeably brighter than the iMac display, despite people claiming they are the same LCD panel. Of course I would have liked to have choices for 5k displays, but sadly there are no viable options to the Studio Display. I can justify the price premium since monitors tend to be used for many years before an upgrade is needed. I'm using the Studio Display with a MacBook Pro Max 14" in clamshell mode as a desktop, so now instead of having a notebook for meetings and travel and a desktop computer, I've consolidated to one.

I've had my eye on the Studio Display but feel that the price tag is a bit high. I really like the glass display which, to me, produces a very sharp viewing experience compared to other monitors. I guess I'm spoiled by the clarity of an Apple display (currently have a 27" Intel iMac) and the reason I lean towards the Studio Display. How would the eSpectrum monitor compare to my 27" iMac glass display, as far as clarity and sharpness is concerned?

    How are you liking the VESA mount for your *Studio Display*? And would you recommend it?
    I'm torn. I really want a VESA mount to save space on my desk. Unfortunately, Apple's VESA mount kills the aesthetics of this monitor. The mount looks bolted on as a lazy after thought. Also, as you stated and demonstrated, the mount obscures the Apple logo. What a shame.
    For a company that prides itself on design (and for a company willing to charge $400 for simple height adjustment option), they really should have offered a VESA mount that doesn't destroy the aesthetics of this monitor. Better yet, they should have offered an option for a VESA mount *and* matching arm. (sigh)

    Monitor was too thin for a normal Volex connector, can’t use the iMac connector either as it uses a inline step down before the connection to the computer. That connection isn’t certified for high voltage. Hence the studio display connector. It’s likely due to regulation.

    What's the brand of your Apple Watch / iPhone wireless charger that you have below your studio display ?

    If I use this for Windows will the brighness be set to maxium brighness by default? (I want the highest). I know there is no way adjusting the settings without a mac.

    Thanks for sharing the only video I could find for the vesa mount version. I’ve been looking to grab the vesa nano screen version. I’ve got a nice chrome arm that should match nicely as well #studiodisplay

      I’m amazed at how few people use a vesa mount!

    I agree that the Studio Display fits a unique niche in providing a well calibrated 5K display with great built-in speakers but leaves many people dissatisfied with the shortcomings including the camera and limited feature set of the included Apple Silicon processor, especially with its high price!

    I bought one of these. I love it. I just wish I could also use it with my PC.

    The new Dell Ultrasharp monitors are looking awesome, really minimalistic. Has anyone test them?

    I have the studio display on the way but the eve in my shopping cart and only found it after I made my order for the studio 🥵
    Im torn but because it’s so much cheaper but then I’m also concerned about delays and supply chain issues with Eve and don’t want to wait months for a display.
