  • If you find that when you make your own clothes the fit of your garments across the back around the shoulder blade type area is too loose or too tight then it could be that you need to make a Narrow or Broad Back adjustment to your sewing pattern.
In this video we cover how to spot if you might need this adjustment and two ways to make the adjustment depending on how much of a change is required.

I watched this in the reply. Good one again, looking forward to next week as I have rounded shoulders/neck. What time are your live sessions? Thank you again!!!

Hey Claire - thanks again for the feedback. So pleased to hear you are finding them interesting. Live sessions are normally 13.30pm on a Tuesday (UK time). I do use the rounded back adjustment quite a lot and so looking forward to do that one next week. Hope to see you there but if you can't make it I'll make sure the recording is here for you :)

Hi Jacqui. I usually have a problem with back neck gape. (I made a shift dress and needed to take 2 inches out of the back neck). I have front neck gape too, but not so bad as the back. I’d like to know the best way to deal with gape although I realise that perhaps I need to size down and then FBA. I imagine I need to do a rounded back adjustment too. Also have narrow shoulders.... Are you planning a neck adjustment tips and tricks?

Hi, if you happen to see this, what would cause the area from middle or shoulders up to back of neck to poof out when standing up straight ? in some store-bought dresses, I have 3 inches of fabric bubbled out there

Hi. That's a great question. I'd say the most common reason for this with store bought garments is that they are usually designed for a b cup bra size so if we are larger than a b cup we often need to buy a larger size to fit well across the chest and this means it's sometimes too big on the shoulders and across the back. It's tricky to alter for on ready to wear clothes but when making your own clothes you can choose a pattern size that properly fits the shoulders and back and then make a full bust adjustment if needed. This usually gives a much better fit. Hope that helps but if you'd like more info drop me an email hello@sewmuchmorefun.co.uk x

Hi. I don’t know what a round back problem looks like. A manikin showing the bad fit so I can understand what’s being adjust whould help me a lot.

Hi Jim - Thanks for your question. I'm sorry I didn't include a specific image in the video but I found this image on Google that might help: petitefont.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/gaping.png In summary a rounded upper back is like a small hump at the top of the back where the shoulders look like they are hunched forward. If you don't adjust the pattern then when you put on a garment and position the shoulders in the right place it tends to stick out at the bottom away from the body because instead of falling straight down from the shoulders, it goes over the rounding and then sticks out. Hope that helps but if you have any other questions just let me know.
