6L80E/6L90E TCC Shudder Fix? - Could This Be The Answer To The Shudder Headache?

  • After studying the hydraulic diagram of this units I decided to try and make this modification to engage TCC as if it would be an on/off type of engagement. I understand that further testing might be needed and that maybe one of the companies like Transgo, Superior or Sonnax can come up with something similar. Even if it's not on/off but to regulate slippage better than what it is for now.
    Torque converter companies also need to get together with their clutch suppliers to try and design a better clutch material or any more upgrades to the internal components if the torque converter.

    As always thanks for the great videos. I have a 2014 Silverado 5.3/6L80. I turned off all of the slip and set it up to only apply in 5th-6th gear. That all worked well but the computer was always on the hairy edge pressure wise of keeping the torque converter locked up (28-30 psi). I could feel it on/off slipping while the computer was attempting to hold it a zero slip. I would see the motor rpm slightly change at steady state driving. As I applied throttle the computer would raise pressure to keep it at zero slip. I then went into the apply pressure table and everything below 75 psi I changed to 75 psi. This thing now locks up like an old 700R4. Its like there is another shift and watching it with a scanner it never slips. I may work with the apply rate to try to soften the apply but right now I am happy knowing my converter is going to have an extended life.

    I see exactly where you're going with this, Hiram. I have a 90 on the bench right now. Out of a 3500 flatbed truck. I'm curious about the apply feel. Gonna take a little trial and error most likely. But it is worth a shot. Great work Hiram!

    This is going to cause other issues. Check tcc limit valve in pump. Transgo kit and valves. Plus using HP tuners and it is a fix for good. Lock up only 5th and 6th gear. Great idea and working out a problem.

    • @AutomaticTransmission
      @AutomaticTransmission  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, I do the HPtuners with both Transgo kits. Some still give issues and I really think it's the aftermarket clutch on the torque converter. I've proven that by adding a bottle of Ford XL-3 friction modifier and shudder goes away. Even on GM reman converters. I add that when the valves and HPtuners are not working.

    I built about more than 50s 6L80/90 and never have problems with tcc…I always use Sonnax zip kit, maybe a little bit more expensive than transgo, but works great, and of course always vacuum checking even with zip kit…By the way, that piece of vb not expensive if buy it brand new, and you not gonna have problems again, just buy separately that part of VB with NO WORN at all, put oem valves, and everything gonna work like a new vb. But it was interesting to listen your thoughts about it, and good to hear new experiments. I hope so, it worked! 👍

    • @patrickwarden2933

      you're saying replace the Valve Body half where that regulator valve goes and use stock regulator valve not Trans Go or Sonnax regulator valve? Why Not replace VB half and use after market valve? Looking at the vacuum test with Trans Go valve seems to tighten up
      the seal with the original VB anyway......

    It's funny Hiram mentions driving his 94 silverado with a 4L60E and swears off the newer technology in the 6 speeds! I do the exact same thing! I have an LS swapped 94 Step-side silvy with a well set up 4L60E that I drive 95% of the time.. I've also got a 2012 Silvy 4x4 Z-71 with the aluminum 5.3L and 6L80E trans... I much prefer my '94 to the 2012.. Hiram, on the 4L60E's when we LOCK the TCC Isolator valve in place so that it can no longer move, (we actually machine the factory valves and install an O-ring to account for bore/valve wear that has occurred before we work on it) we don't need to drill the exhaust through the casting because the valve is no longer regulating... is there a reason you don't want to LOCK the regulator valve in the 6L80E in towards the casting and simply stop it from regulating and allow the valve in the pump to handle the regulation or on/off function? Would that not instantly negate the need for the regulation in the valve body? Kind of like blocking the valves in the valve body of the 4L60E for the 3-2 control valve and simply forcing the separator plate feed hole size to control the 3-2 presssure/timing? To simplify, why not just remove the TCC regulator valve from the valve body entirely (by blocking it)? If it's a harsh engagement that will occur, then maybe we can alter feed hole size elsewhere to control how firm the lock up is. I have the trans out of my 2012 right now, and I'd be willing to experiment with whatever method you recommend. I also have HP Tuners and do tuning for both Performance, and TCC on these vehicles. I THINK what you are trying to accomplish is to no longer have to use HP Tuners to alter the factory programming, and you just want a boxed solution from one of the shift kit manufacturers so that ALL of us can have a drop in/drill/plug solution without having to license and tune the factory programming... Am I right?
