If you do any exercise more than 15 times per approach, , then you're just doing wanking, because according to science, it's enough for the muscles to be tense for about 34 seconds. This means that you need to use weights that will reduce your reps to 15 very concentrated push-ups.

That longer rest is something I need to incorporate. I seen a video from House of Hypertrophy where they went over a study on set rests, and summed up, it seems a 2-3 minute rest grew more size than 1 mintue rests. I'm sure it's more nuanced than that and not true all the time, but I could see it being a case of more time to get blood and nutrients in before being taxed with activity again. Ty for sharing.

67 year old pushup junkie here- the form used in these video clips with flared elbows is a guaranteed injury- keep elbows closer to body. If you want strength the slow down the tempo of the reps and be sure to make the eccentric (going down to ground) at least twice the speed as concentric (moving body away from ground). After establishing your baseline of pushup fitness get a weighted vest for body weight exercises. Personally I like the cross fit "Cindy" 10 pull-ups, 20 pushups, 30 air squats x 10 sets or the "Murph" same as Cindy but starts with 1 mile run, pull-push-squat then 1 mile run. Also, you can target upper pec and delta by leaning forward, i.e. hands closer to hips, but be ware that you must change hand placement with thumbs pointing forward- its a progression I'm using to get to a planche pushup. Final thought- form is everything!! The range of scapular movement should include protraction and retraction... I see lots of people doing pushups with a several inch range of motion which looks more like a rapid body bounce than a pushup. The "count" is way less important than proper form. Try a couple with good form and you will find that pushups are not so easy!

Completely agree! I’m 58 and hadn’t done pushups in years and could get down and do 30 …. Anyways, I continued every other day and incorporated chin ups and body weight squats.. but my shoulders and elbows started hurting…
I did more research and decided to do way more strict pushups and put my elbows slightly closer to my body so my hands were closer to being directly below my elbows and much slower - approx 3 seconds down under control all the way til my chest slightly touches the floor before going back up to lockout at regular speed.
This is waaaay harder than doing pushups as fast as you can (muscles not doing much/any work on way down when going fast).
At first I could barely squeeze out 12. Then maybe 10 next set and lucky to do same next.
But it makes sense - thats like 48 seconds or so for 12 reps.
Two weeks later Im up to 18 reps , then a set of 15 followed by 12.
My chest muscles are noticeably building and my joints don’t hurt.
I don’t know how many fast (ie cheater ) pushups I can do now (maybe 45? More?) but I don’t care. This way is much harder work, and safer for my body!

Keeping your elbows in tight shifts the majority of the load from pectoral to triceps. And the eccentric should be slow and controlled. The concentric movement can be fast or slow depending on what your goals are. All the variations demonstrated in this video are fantastic though.

Take care! I got well into press-ups back in my 30’s/40’s. I used to get up in the morning, put the kettle on, and launch into it. I got to 60 in 45 seconds. I wanted to push it to 70 in a minute, so one morning I really went for it. Big mistake! Nearly 30 years later my shoulder is still vulnerable. I used to try a few press-ups occasionally, see how it goes, but it was way too painful. Shame. Must have torn stuff quite badly.
Just want to advise the “young” that they’re not indestructible, and one small mistake can have lasting consequences. Most important to ease yourself in, and warm up those muscles and ligaments.

I (75) had two knee implants and 1 Shoulder implant within the last 4 years and it has really helped me stay active: still wave riding and windsurfing. Two friends of mine with serious damage to their rotator cuff (muscles tendons and ligaments) had surgery and are back surfing, playing ice hockey and kitesurfing.

During the COVID-19 lockdowns all I had was an EZ curl bar and a jump rope. Gyms were closed. 90% of my workouts were nothing but pushups. I started doing high rep routines of 30 down and I did different variations. 3 times a week of pushups and jump rope kept me in shape. Now you definitely need pullups for your back. That's non-negotiable but pushups done with proper form can do wonders for your chest, shoulders and triceps. Pushups are probably the best compound bodyweight exercise.

Left rehabilitation in February and went home. Had a physical therapist came to my house for exercises. After this, I performed 100 bed situps and 100 wheelchair ♿ push-ups for six months. After this, I have a routine daily dumbbells Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Now, I performed 25 sink squats, 25 sink push-ups, 25 bed situps. I rotate every exercise to gain weight. When I was around 26 years old I was challenging myself with 200 pushups a day. I got impatient and did them faster each day to save time. At around 2 weeks my collar bone dislocated during the workout, apparently from the impact of going down and up too fast too many times. Took 6 months to heal, and it still sticks out maybe 1/3 an inch.
Slower pushups are a good idea. Collagen may help prevent the ligaments/tendons from being too brittle.

I, 39 yo male, do a muscle activation set of 30 reps morning and evening against the counter. I do partial rep each rep targeting the part of the range of motion that feels weakest (obvious at the end of the rep range). Yeah, he said that you MUST have the rest days, yet while I was in BUD/S (Seal Training), we did hundreds of pushups per day. There no real rest days, especially during 4th Phase (Pre training). Our routine was the Combat Training Tank (Olympic Size Pool) every single day. Then we did a workout in the afternoon that consisted of things like pushups, flutter kicks, etc. That was Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Tuesdays and Thursdays, we did the O-Course. There was no shortage of being told to "drop down" which meant to drop down facing the nearest body of water, and push out 20 pushups. 4th Phase was 20, 1st phase was 30, etc. Again, 4th phase is something that wasn't always a thing, but when I went there, it was, and this was just pre-training. 1st Phase was when the real training started, and the 1st day of that was called One-One Day. Now, I got injured, twice so I went through 4th phase twice in a row and med-dropped in 1st Phase. But my total time there was almost 6 months.
When I got done, I was the strongest I've ever been. So I'm not so sure you actually have to have the rest days. But, I will also say that I don't think you could go without rest days forever. Not at the intensity we were working out. I mean, by the end of 4th Phase, if I remember right, we were doing somewhere near 8,000 meters each day in the Pool. We would run the O-course twice, and those M-W-F workouts were no joke at all. Once you got into 1st Phase, what you did each day was much more varied, but 4th phase takes a lot out of you while it also preps you. The last I heard, they aren't doing it anymore. But who knows. I just know that when I transferred to Miramar, and would play basketball, guys would complain about how hard I through the ball. I mean, passing the ball is basically a pushup move, and yes, I threw the ball hard. LOL

68yrs, started with 25 from the knees twice daily at start of the year. (also, sit ups and planks) now 4 months on, I'm at 110 twice daily (never missed a single day) haven't felt this good for years! Since starting back in January I've now joined a gym and started cardio and weights (something I never thought I do at my age) it's amazing what small consistent steps can lead to. I wonder what the numbers will be by the end of the year? Never to late to start. 😊

36 years old. At first I started with full range and would do 5 sets of 25 every day. Now I do shorties (half range) and I don't do sets of any particular number. With shorties I do as many as possible in 45 seconds and it's more of a "push down" than a push up you just rock up and down that's how u really blast those pecs if u want growth.

Why is nobody talking about the need of massaging your body after exercising? I exercise 90 minutes and massage my muscles afterwards for 30 minutes 4 times weekly and never had any trouble whatsoever with damaged muscles. I do tai chi, chi gong and power Kundalini joga for the last 53 years and walk 1.5 @ 2 hours and jog/ run 5@10 minutes daily. Most important is listen to your body sometimes you want to exercise but you body don't you should never push it. Sometimes your body wants to exercise and you should follow and you will love it. There are times my body refuses to exercise for weeks and when it wants again I can feel that it has become much stronger in the meanwhile these are moments I can do 230 push-ups in 3 different sets, while I normally only do 110 @ 130 and I always come back to my normal training after the first few days.

Its been a very long time since I have heard anyone explain things in a way a true athlete knows. You have a new sub. For exercise and fitness thats a very hard sub. You are only the 3rd in over 10 years lmao. No hype, lies or gimmicks or BS... thank you. I believe priorities are important. Motivations based purely on looks are very flawed. The goals should be based on performance/strength/endurance/physical health/mental health. Man you have exactly the right attitude! TY and many Blessings!

As a US Army Veteran, the goal for my age group was 80 push-ups to reach the max at 100%. Don't get me wrong, the US Army made mistakes IMHO for making young males having to max at 82 push-ups between the 18-21-year-old bracket with a 2-minute time limit. For males in that group that were able to achieve that, you all were definitely alphas. The problem with those insane standards at that time was that most males reach their absolute primes in total strength between 25-32 years of age. Yet the standards to reach the max for males lowered from 82 between 18-21, to 80 between 22-26. And I think to reach the max between 27-31 was only 75.
I consistently made scores over 290 and maxed twice at 300 during my time. Now I'm using push-ups to help strengthen my bad left shoulder. Surprisingly, I'm getting better results on doing less. Because I severely injured my lower abdominal muscles during my time performing sit-ups during my Army days. I have had to use alternative methods to work out my abdominals. If I do more than 30 regular sit-ups, my abdominals will lock-up. It was frustrating. Lately I've learned to incorporate a modest rep of flutter-kicks and broomstick twists which have not only strengthened my abdominals once again, it also has helped me do good push-ups. My form has improved once again, and my left-shoulder is feeling stronger. Right now, I'm not pushing myself past 30 push-ups at a time. I'm slowly working myself up the ladder once again. The goal is to reach at least 50 push-ups at a time without feeling any discomfort and pain in my left-shoulder. I've also invested in the Perfect Pull-Up, and that has been a tremendous help on improving my push-ups.

I'm 57 , I tend to just do sets of 10 really clean ones whenever I feel like it throughout the day . Every once in a while I will go for a max set and it's usually around 25 that I start to fatigue . My main goal is not to get an injury because my shoulders are fairly beat up from a lifetime of sports and manual labor . I still paint houses by myself so I can't afford to get hurt . Some days I just do them on my knees or against a wall, i don't care . It's all about getting SOMETHING in every day , not feeding your ego .

Thank you for your feedback! I understand that you were looking for a specific number of push-ups. The reason for the general approach is that optimal numbers can vary widely depending on individual fitness levels, goals, and recovery abilities. However, a good starting point is to aim for 10-15 push ups for 2-3 sets and to progressively challenge yourself based on your own goals and response. Hope this clarifies things and thanks again for watching.

I remember that in Basic Training, we would do thousands of pushups daily... we would screw up all the time and get punished every 20 mins or so. Literally, we did pushups all the time. I had no issues doing 20-30 pushups in just 20 seconds. The problem was that I never did more than 50 pushups on a test. By 45 pushups, I would die... I was tired constantly. After basic training years later, I did 70-80 pushups in 2 minutes. I trained pushups purposely with proper form. My best result was at the end of 2019, with 85 pushups in 2 mins.

I figured out 40 years ago what Firaz Zihabi preaches: training to failure is not as effective as training 85% every day. In High School - not even close to my peak - we did that President's Fitness Test. Number of push-ups in 2 minutes = 120 and I wasn't even tired. Pull - ups to dead hang = 40. I was a machine, and it's because I trained every day, but not to failure. Just to 85%. I'm certain puberty helped, but I kept training that way into my 30s.

Ive been doing pushups on nd off all my life but recently ive noticed that the soreness in my arms, mainly the tri/elbow area, which used to last for 48 hours typically after my workout routine is now lasting for 4, 5 days.
    What could be the reason?
The amount of workout is less compared to before so it cant be because of over workout.
Or is it because im doing less so muscle recovery is slowed down? Im confused.
