Great stuff. That flare test had me laughing. Was not expecting the little robo arm.
Haha love that thing 😂 thank you!
Thanks for telling us about the iris ring! Never heard of or used one of those before. I was always plenty happy with shooting at T 0.95 all the time.
I always wondered what that iris ring was for 😎
Blaine your videos are 🔥🔥🔥. The view from your balcony is epic. You could shoot a whole movie from your location without leaving your building. Alexa 💯💯💯and Atlas. Great combo.
sharpness looks a lot better then the pre production sets! suprisingly decent edge to edge wide open
Yes they are definitely looking good. Glad Atlas made some nice improvements to them
oh man what a treat, blessed footage incoming
😇😇 this is all test footy but I will use these on a few projects coming up and I can’t wait!
@@BlaineWestropp1 it's crazy how good it looks with just a 709 convert
The iris ring bit was gold. Excited to test these at Atlas in the next few weeks on my mini LF!
😂😂 thank ya. youre going to love them!
Crispy. Flare test was fantastic
Thank you Keith!
"I cant make sense of flares in lens tests, I dunno if we'll even do it." - Cuts to an elegant, efficient rig specifically to test the flare 💀
😂😂😂 reluctantly…
Absolute 🤴
😇
haha when flare test happens i don’t even know what to look at……… maybe because i completely avoid flares in my work
my adjective would have been "over-engineered" lens flare test, but i had the same thought.
Beautiful images!!! Love the softness and subtle and dense colours
Thank you! I love it as well
The wait was worth it! These look absolutely gorgeous - if I had the money I'd definitely pick these up. When I first saw the flare test, I absolutely thought you had a robot butler - good ol' sly pod.
Robot butler lol. These lenses are quite nice. Very interesting look. Would love to take a look at them next to some of the other newer, and some older anamorphics
@@BlaineWestropp1 I still haven't tried the Remus but from what I've seen the Mercury's definitely have the edge, just less of the grunge and a bit more clarity - without losing any of the nice characteristics, but obvs the Remus are a tonne cheaper. I always go back to their Nero adapter and have a lot of fun with it. Also just had the chance to shoot on the Atlas Orions which are a lot of fun, not so much for my back though.
Cool. And yeah the orions are great but big!
This was a super insightful test, 42mm is definitely my favorite look!
hey thanks! I do love the 42mm as well
Legit one of my favorite combos.
I love it
the image looks fentastic🔥
I like it 😊
Thanks, beautiful texture.
They are quite nice!
Love the look of these 😍Would be great to see this side by side to an FX3 with the Blazar Remus' as a budget-friendly option.
Would love to do that test!
Loved this. Those mercurys are so good.
they are so nice!
I opted for a set without the Iris ring 😉
😂😂😂
and again, loved the video! i love the f/8 f/16 moment.. your professionalism makes me want to do the jump to Da Vinci
other question: how possible would it be to have a 20 min conversation with you regarding some questions i have, looking at footage, etc. how much!
Hey thank you! You can use davinci without jumping to it. For example, I edit in premiere and grade in resolve. We can arrange a call. Shoot me an email. It’s on the UA-cam page. Or message me on Instagram, @wstrpp
I really wanted to rent the Mercury lenses for my last short film, but there aren't a lot of rental houses that have them. I love the look so much.
They are quite nice! Where are you based? want to use mine?
@@BlaineWestropp1 Vancouver, BC. Rental house near me has Blazar Remus though which is kind of close to the look
Cool. Have always wanted to go to Vancouver!
These daddies are NICE
I much like them
These lenses are fun, I used them on a project earlier this year and felt they were a lot more interesting than the Orions... also, you should have shown a pic of this "iris ring", still don't understand what it is🤔
Hahah the iris ring 😂 and yes I really like these. I also like the physical size. They are great!!
Dang, I didn't know about the aperture thing 😂
Hehe 😂
I just shot a spec on these. They are beautiful.
I very much like them!
I am opposite view of it above Hoboken(Jersey City The Heights)... the Mercs I like allot but too expensive in my current un-booked state... but I ordered the cheap Blazar 45mm Blue streak PL 1.5 ana as soon as it comes in I hope to test it on my Red Gemini... it would cool to do a side by side but B&H has my B/O as early july... anyhow I really love your content and your earnest approach. Thank you.
hey thanks so much! hopefully you get that 45 soon! if ya ever need the mercs lemme know! would also love to do a side by side!

Good boy
Stalker! 🤣 #justkidding
That 36...oh my word
Wild. I love it.
Fuck man been dying for this one. Want to go grab a beer?
love them. and absolutely.
J.J. Abrams approves those flares ;)
Haha yes he does.
Still waiting for someone to properly test and discuss the differences between these bad boys and the blazar 1.6x lenses.
I gotta get those in my hands! will happily test.
great video as always. how do you achieve the arri look on the fx3? the colors match perfectly! did you do a cst to arri log 3 first and then to rec.709? edit: just read the comments and saw that you used the arri alexa for all of the shots haha
Hey thanks! Yes it was just crops to equivalent sensor areas! Maybe I should have been more clear.
you need a shirt that says - "checkout my T8.0" or "I test @T16" or "I shoot @ T16" or "T16 PIONEER" haha
😂😂😂😂
Let’s just be real for a second, GEAR MATTERS. you can be the best cinematographer in the world, but having a close to $100,000 up gives you an enormous step up over everybody else’s images. All of these images are naturally lit, the grocery store one included, and they look like they can be in a Hollywood movie. I no longer wonder why my images don’t look like the ones in the big screen, 😅
I know it is really easy to want more gear, but you don't always need it to make an image. I of course always push for fancy stuff, and I like it, as do we all.. but I recently shot on a bare fx3, no monitor, 24-70, and was loving what I was getting. so while I do love the Alexa and fancy lenses and dollies and stuff.. you can make some magic with an iPhone. for real. it is great to use the good stuff.. and you should push for it. the Alexa is nuts.. its the best camera I have ever used. but do not let not using one make you think you cant make a good look!
@@BlaineWestropp1absolutely! Hearing from the crew on the creator, there are many ways to skin the cat, but there is a reason most film productions reach for the Alexa 9/10. If you have an unlimited budget, why not grab the best gear?!?
@@BlaineWestropp1also, I am definitely NOT saying anyone “needs” these rigs, I’m simply pointing out that there are LEVELS to this game 😂😂
@flochfitness yep agreed!
Yep. Agreed!!
What kind of gimbal/stabilizing system do you use for this setup? The shots around 2:00 look super clean.
movi pro :)
you are direct. good. Im assuming the FX3 is "cropped" compared to LF because you can't shoot open gate on fx3 / a7siii? interesting how much the extra room on top and bottom can do to the image.
hey thanks! on the fx3, you crop the sides to get to 2.39:1. on the Alexa, you crop the top and bottom very slightly to get to 2.39:1. hope that makes sense!
I see a very weird aberration in the center of the sun when you showed a more representative flare in minute 4:52. What is that?
yep. annoying. sometimes happens. I need to look into it further. it could have been bc the camera was not fully heated up, it could have been some debayer setting set wrong for arriraw in post. need to take a closer look at that footage.
Finally
😇😇
Prob a dumb question, but I really love the look of both the 36 & 42. These focal length are so close on paper, but the 36 looks wider for certain. I'm just curious if you can get away with the 42 only and backup (if you have the space) to get a similar look of the 36 (speaking for someone that can only afford one, of course) :)
Not a dumb question at all. I like wide anamorphics, this is a tough one. 42 is a nice balance, where you could have more versatility. 36 is a great wide, and looks wide, in a good way. So maybe 42 is the one to get for versatility in being able to get somewhat wide if you have the space to back up, and also more normal shots.
@@BlaineWestropp1 , thank you for the quick reply! I have the 42 & 72 on pre-order (from over a year ago). I just love that super wide look. The different between the two is more than I thought it would be.
its a tough call. do you have the app cadrage? its either free or $5-$10. its a directors viewfinder. get it, choose your camera and the mercury lenses.. and walk around with the set loaded in and see if it helps you determine which is better for you in terms of the 36 and 42. you will at least get a sense of the field of view.
@@BlaineWestropp1 , great idea! I'll do that! Thanks again for your input !

Noice review, your inception at the end, you in bed then the clip and then the clip with in the clip. Omg 😆. That fx3 looked pretty good of the city.
Hey you know Dylan Batista? He lives out in NY has U2 channel about DP. Has unique way of sharing content on u2 like you.
hey thank you 😂😇. "fx3" shot was shot on the Alexa but scaled to be what it would be if it was shot on the fx3. every shot in here was on the Alexa mini lf, besides the webcam shots lol. I do not know Dylan, maybe I will look for him!
@@BlaineWestropp1 I’ve seen you match the fx3 so I thought damn son, you got that colour grade down. Haha
@pglazzari1 haha I do have the match though :) I plan to make that available very soon.
thank you for these tests! really awesome. Whats that weird purple ring in the specular highlights at 4:41 and the following shots? is it really coming straight out of camera with a simple rec709 conversion?
Yes unfortunately. It is possible the camera was cold as I just turned it on. But this is something I need to look into. I’ve seen it before, but only sometimes.
@@BlaineWestropp1 i see, is it a rental arri or yours?
@@tjena it is mine!
@@BlaineWestropp1 shesh🤙
Hey, what codec and resolution on the mini LF did you choose for those lens test ?
Hi! Sorry for the delay. I can’t remember the codec. There may be some shot in arriraw and some in 422hq!
what are you using to achieve the smooth movements at 1:44? it can't be a gimbal, is it?
Movi pro :)
did you pick up any corn flakes?
Got a block of cheddar lol
F8 🤯
A rare gem 😂😂
Thoughts vs your old greatjoys?
I like the GJs. they are also 1/8 the cost. I took the GJ 50 to Italy and was very happy with the images. took it everywhere I went and got really good looking stuff. I am not a fan on pincushion, which the GJs have. the mercury obviously do not. but it's an easy fix to get the GJ back to barrel distortion in resolve. overall I like both.
Wish I could afford it haha
Is that moza slypod pro ?
Yup!
@@BlaineWestropp1 Hi
Which lenses and variable nd filter would you suggest for BlackMagic cinema camera full frame .
ordered one on discount .
Am an independent Filmaker/editor and colorist . Your work has inspired me for some cinematography with some lighting works .
My purpose will be short films UA-cam works and get some good freaking shots .
Was thinking of loawa 10 mm as first . Maybe it’s too wide and nisi vnd as nd filter .
Just looking for some suggestions.
Slypod made me 😂
haha love it
nice

What fizz/focus gear is that?
its an old pdmovie air something. ive had it for so long and its tiny and comes in handy for for stuff like this and to toss on the movi!
@@BlaineWestropp1 Much appreciated
They still make it, or a newer version at least. Good price, small, great to have in the bag.
