This is why I love my Blazar Good Joy. It’s a good balance for me.
That focus chart is so accurately mind bursting with details about character. So much value.
For sure, just ordered my own one so I can do more of these tests haha
I really enjoyed this video. Cool seeing all the people that came together to help you with this video! Love that collaboration! Also, it's just so cool that lenses give us unique personalities like this. I just love it!!
Thank you! Appreciate this comment ✌🏼
Phenomenal video! Been waiting for this combo for a minute. The best part about this video, though - just like your others - is your fantastic ability to tell a story. Was sutured into the whole video from start to finish. Well done like always 🙏🏾🎬🎥
Thank you for the amazing feedback! Appreciate it 🔥
@@MortyFilms of course! gotta give credit where it’s due 🙏🏾
I love your treatment of screen b-roll in this vid. Really fits the aesthetic of the whole video to show the physical nature of the screens
appreciate it 🙏🏼
Man what an awesome video. And your grading is soooooo good
Thank youuuuu 🔥
Really good video. I just got into the world of Anamorphics with the Sirui Saturn 50mm, but i agree exactly with what you said. All the budget ones are so sharp. This is probably the closest your gonna get to the "classic" premium anmorphic look. These are my next goal !
so well done! Thank you for this informative video!
Thank you 🙏🏼
Yes yes and yes.
Also, yes.
Hell yes!
I knew @cammackey would show up where there’s cool anamorphics!
But... yes??
That was great content; thanks for clearing my doubts.
Happy I could ✌🏼
This was a great video dude, keep it up!!! Subscribed
Thank you 🙏🏼🔥
Such a solid video Morty McFly. Keep them coming. ❤
Thank you, there might be an equally awesome and classically futuristic collab coming up 🫢
Great video Morty! You have great storytelling skills that allow you to piece together so many seemingly disparate parts and scenes into a cohesive whole. This is inspiring me to branch out with how I film my videos for sure! I will say though, I still prefer the cleaner, sharper, more clinical anamorphic lenses because I can choose how much character and degradation to add to them in post. Starting with a super soft look is almost impossible to sharpen up if I need to, whereas it's not hard at all to soften a sharp image. Dehancer + a mist filter gives me everything I need to get a vintage look, so I will be sticking to Sirui and Laowa. Crazy that Atlus let you borrow these lenses though, wow! They seem like such nice guys!
Thank you for your feedback, I really appreciate the continued support! I get your point, I’m about to make a video about ‘anamorfakes’ which might interest you ✌🏼🙏🏼
@@MortyFilms I'll keep an eye out for it! Also I recently posted my own Komodo X vs. OG Komodo video, would love to get your feedback on that. I still have a long way to go LOL!
@@DynamicPhil84 Awesome! I’ll sure give it a watch!
WOOOOOOOOOO
WOHOO 🙌🏼
Ok, you guys are rad.
Already knew you made some amazing lenses that I would probably sell a kidney for, AND yall are cool?
Get outta here!😊
THAT DELORIAN! THAT OUTFIT! WERE HEADED TO THE FUTURE BABY! (Also spot on, *Character* is what we’re all really looking for)
GREAT SCOTT!!! ⏰⏱️⏲️⌚️🕰️
Wow, this channel is way too small for that level of production value. Well done, sir! Love the look of those lenses as well.
Thanks for your support 🔥
This is my dreams brand. Thanks for sharing the results……. It’s beautiful
🙌🏼
Seeing the side by side comparison was great. Would love to get my hands on some atlas lenses 😅
Thanks, yeah they are truly awesome! Maybe you get a chance to test them out in a rental house near you ✌🏼
Bro, WHAT THE HACK this video? Amazing work, I hope I can achieve this look and quality to my work, subscribing now to your channel!!
haha, thank you so much, I appreciate it! 🙌🏼
great job on the video 🙂
Appreciate it ✌🏼
Love the video.
Thank you ✌🏼
@@MortyFilms you’re more than welcome to
If you could only have one .. would you go for the 42mm or 54mm? I preordered the 42 but I'm considering the 54. Great video btw, the delorian was a nice touch
I’d go with the 42mm, I always like the slightly wider field of view and a tiny bit more barrel distortion.
Lens charts can easily mislead you if you're going for a specific look. I'm happy to see companies deciding to not for for the most clinical image. Sharpness is important, and lots of chromatic aberration tends to look bad, but distortion, out of focus edges, and a less clinical center can add a lot to making something look more engaging. My favorite spherical lenses aren't the cleanest.
For sure, well said! ✌🏼
All the legacy brands try to mask imperfections as character. Imperfections are fine, but I'm not paying a premium for that.
Remember, you can always add imperfections or "character" in post to a more clinical lens but cannot make an imperfect lens look clinical.
Honestly, this makes me want to get the Blazar Remus lenses and toss my Black Pro Mist 1/4 on them. Atlas lenses are great but a bit out of my budget. Loved this video though!
Yeah, I know what you mean. I really wanna get my hands on the Remus and do a video about them!
I’m assuming the 42mm is the best first lens to pickup, but which one would you choose for a second tighter focal length?
The 42mm for sure is the way to start this set. I think for the second one I might actually skip the 72mm and go straight to the 95mm. I think it’s the perfect middle ground between the 72 and the 138 as a tele option.
There's just something creamy, organic, textured, and present in the atlas brand and other high end anamorphic glass. These new budget options are almost artificial, too clean and digitized that takes away from the fingerprint of quality glass. Hands down, i would pick up the mercury set, or any vintage anamorphic glass, any day over these budget options. I can afford the budget options, but still won't buy them.
I think it’s amazing to have the option of the budget glass, but you’re totally right. I mean there are more interesting options coming now with the Blazar Remus for example. Would love to get my hands on them!
Oh nice my friend! Do you feel it can paired well with the vazen amber flares? The 42mm looks great!
I haven’t been able to play with the amber version of the Vazen unfortunately, bit the Mercurys have some very different characteristics overall. I’d say it depends on the project, but I do think there’s quite a difference in the look honestly.
@@MortyFilms ok thanks for your comment ! I would definetly want to try these but it is difficult in my area! Continue the good work and happy new year!
@@JohanGassCommunications Well, I hope I can bring you a lot more helpful content then, happy new year 🎊✌🏼
At 1:43 what NPF adapter you have on your monitor/atomos? Is it a dummy battery adapter? Thanks for any info.
It’s called the AtomX Battery Eliminator, it comes with the Atomos Ninja but you can also buy it separately.
@@MortyFilms thanks 👍
The truth is sharpness actually is harder/costlier to achieve. Case in point, some of the most affordable full frame anamorphic lenses available today… the Blazar Remus lenses, are also among the most affordable. They have a size and image very similar to the Mercury series. But without the defects of the Mercury lenses… such as focal plain curvature, and the weird off axis panning defect. I picked up a set of 3 for $2199.
My thing with the Mercuries is they’re a proper front anamorphic, and Atlas clearly uses vintage coatings, not just modern coatings in the right color, which is what we get from the budget lens manufacturers. It all stacks up to something a LOT closer to real vintage anamorphics.
Right, I have seen some footage of the Remus, they seem to be very soft. I’d love to get my hands on a set and review them, they look very different from other lenses at that price point.
@@ForestCinema also a LOT more expensive than cheaper options though, there’s a place for both I think, the Mercurys open up a whole new world of quality anamorphics that don’t cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
@@MortyFilms I pre-ordered a 42mm for $5K. I sold my projector anamorphic setup for $4500. There’s absolutely a place for the various types and tiers of anamorphic, but most of the people that bash Mercury for softness are just people who will never use them anyway. They’re the first lens in my price range that can actually provide a vintage character
Yes, I feel the same way for sure.
I wonder how the DZOFILM pavos and the Laowa PL/EL nanomnorphs would fair in this comparison?
I only briefly was able to play around with the Pavos, I think they are a bit softer but definitely also have that nice falloff towards the edges. But they’re also a 2x squeeze, so the look is a bit more extreme compared to the Mercurys I’d say. I hope I can do a video on them soon.
You can see the sample footage in this video at 0:23: ua-cam.com/video/p6KIJvvyiCw/v-deo.htmlsi=h5jLCoBIyDAb0Tdj
The Pavos look much more appealing and nicer to me than the Mercury's
I agree with your point about softness, but I think you're misleading people a bit with the idea that more expensive anamorphic lenses are softer. Arri and panavision have some extremely sharp options with very minimal anamorphic characteristics, and they are way more expensive than Atlas. They (at least panavision) also offer some much more distorted and vintage looking options.
But to your point, it's all just about the look that works for the specific project.
You’re absolutely right! Thank you for clarifying. I noticed a lot of people ranting on ‘soft’ anamorphics, so I wanted to make clear why they look the way they do, but yeah, Arri and Panavision do offer some very clean options in the high end. It definitely depends on whether you want to go with a modern or a vintage look.
Were you shooting everything wide open?
Yeah, pretty much for the vast majority of the shots, so they do still get sharper when stopping them down.
I'm still waiting. When are they shipping in Europe?
I don’t know unfortunately, but I really hope it won’t be too long. Did you preorder?
I hope too. Yes I preordered 2 years ago @@MortyFilms
The Atlas Mercurys look great on a super 35mm sensor such as the Komodo which is the one you used. However, once on a full frame sensor such as the Raptor, they are almost unusable. I canceled my order.
Really? Can you describe what you mean by unusable?
Mostly focus and frame distortion on full frame. This guy explains it better than I could: ua-cam.com/video/3nkJs6blZkY/v-deo.html
You should do the Sirui Venus 1.6. Not the 1. 33.
I personally don't even like the Orions. Flares look sharp and cheap. And the Mercury's have weird focal place issues that have nothing to do "character". And at $8k are completely overpriced.
Not a fair test, would have gone with the 35 mm with 1.6 x squeeze
Thanks Marty... er I mean.. Morty!
No worries Dr. emMATT bARMOwN…
@@MortyFilms hahaha amazing 😂
Sweet, i've learned something today. And you are not Joshua Bardwell.
No idea who Joshua Bardwell is… but great 👍🏼😂
damn this was funny!
Haha, thanks!
Morty is the BEST
Naw, thanks mate 😂
Could you just soften the look with some filter? black mist, smoque2 etc...
You can definitely soften the look with filters like that, but I’m not sure if you’ll get the same look out of it. It would be an interesting test though.
I’ll stick with Cooke anamorphic - far more superior than the Atlas mercury. Only thing that comes close are the Glaswerk anamorphic lenses.
Well, that’s quite a price jump though…
@@MortyFilms true, but how many times are productions filming exclusively with anamorphic. At that point, best to rent or buy Laowa anamorphic alternative.
