- Here's how I mounted my tablet to the wall and gave it 5v power from my existing alarm panel system wiring. In my example its a Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet with a custom 3D printed case and low profile 90 deg ribbon flat USB charging cable that connects to a 12v to 5v adaptor which gets power from the alarm panel. I use a Konnected alarm setup and this tablet is part of that system along with smartthings and actiontiles.

I enjoyed the video; it is amazing how technology has come so far that you can use a tablet to do all of that now.
Agreed. And the other crazy thing is i think i paid more for the mount and 12v to 5v adapter than i did for the tablet itself!
Always lots of good information!!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoy it.
I tried this with a Lenovo M8 and although when I plug the USB cable in it says charging, the Lenovo fails to draw enough power to charge the battery. I went from a 12v DC to the step-down converter. Prior to entering the converter, the multimeter is indicating 12v. I'm going to try to use a USB A pigtail to USB C pigtail to see if that set-up works instead, but I'm open to suggestions.
One last question: what adapter transformer do you recommend using for the circuit downstairs?
Great video! Related to your security system but not to this exact video…..I noticed your metal enclosure, any issues with your WiFi strength/reception due to the metal enclosure?
You mean the metal main alarm enclosure where the konnected panels are? No, i dont have an issue with wifi. Been working flawlessly for 4 years now. But my main router is literally directly above on the next level so about 10ft away. Probably helps!
Hi @nater, great content! A question I have though is why is my power source not charging from the adapter? I have the 12v to 5v adapter, and I plugged in the cord from that to a device, but nothing was charging. Do you know why that might be?
Do you have a 12v source of enough power for charging your device? Did you use a multimeter to verify you have 12v going in and 5v coming out of the adapter?
If you incorporate a tablet with a Konnected set up, can you employ a pass code for disabling the alarm - so that it acts the same as the old security system. Wouldn’t want an intruder to be able to easily disable an activated alarm from the tablet. Would also be useful for family members coming and going.
Yes, I do that exact thing ua-cam.com/video/fpp5k0IdX44/v-deo.html
Cool. I’ll check it out. Thanks for the quick reply. Just bought a new Konnected Pro. Excited to receive it and set it all up. Still mulling over adding the tablet.
Question:
I have a DSC system powered by 16.5 VAC transformer and three keypads that take 12V DC. Would it be correct for me to assume I can simply purchase three 12v to 5v 3A step down adapters to power Fire 8 tablets after removing each keypads?
Is the step down adaptor as or safer then installing a power socket behind each tablet?
If I do not wish to use the 12V DC from the alarm system with it's backup battery, What kind of 12V DC brick do I need to purchase to power three Fire 8 tablet? I think you used 12V DC with 30 watts. My Fire 8 tablet uses USB-C and can charge under 5 hours with 5W or as fast as 2.5 hours with 15W.
Yes and yes to your first two questions.
Have you had to deal with the battery failing yet? I'd like to eliminate the need for the battery altogether...
Still chugging along. No battery issues yet.
What adapter did you use from the wall wires to the tablet charger?
Product links are in the video description
On the converter does the Red wire go to Live and Black wire to Neutral?
I believe so, I think there is a + and - sign on it illustrating that.
@@NaterTater thanks, our outlets are 240v I'm not sure this can be used for mine.
What is that dashboard on the screen? I’m using Alexa standard dashboard and it’s horrible.

Where did you purchase the deep wall box?
Home depot, its just a regular outlet box (for 2x4 stud). Meaning not a shallow box.
Thank you
where'd you get that wall mountable case for your fire tablet?
Its a custom 3d printed one that isn't available anymore but there are many similar to it. Links to the special usb charger cable is in the video description.
@@NaterTater thanks. I'll use your affiliate link for the usb cable when I'm ready to set it up
What software are you using please??
Action Tiles
Hi, what are the specs of the step down transformer please? 12v down to 5v? And it is a female USB A on the end, which then the ribbon cable plugs right into? Thanks for the video btw 👍
Correct. Here's the one i bought konnected.io/products/12v-to-5v-usb-power-converter?variant=828080488468
How do you connect the peizo buzzer
I used one of the extra pairs of wires from the tablet to the alarm box. The buzzer just ties into the Konnected board.
Why not put a charging transformer.and a recessed outlet?
That is an option I bring up towards the end. For me it was easier to do this since I already had wiring to support the 12v setup. I'd have to wire in a new outlet to do the other method.
