Reacting to the Bal de Débutantes Fashion (this is the nepo baby version of the MET gala)

  • Since 1992, Le Bal de Debutantes has brought together young women of privileged backgrounds to attend a modern version of the Debutante balls of the 19th century. In the modern age, these women still come from many of the most prominent families around the world, and they still wear Haute Couture ballgowns for the evening to show off their sometimes exquisite taste. So I thought we should wade into the world of these young and modern "debs" and the dresses by designers like Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Dior, Oscar de la Renta, and more!

Don't single me out like that! This is too funny. My parents forced me to do this idiotic waste of wealth when I was younger. It was ridiculous. Last time I checked, it's not the 19th century and you don't need to be "presented to society" so you can start fishing for a husband at the ripe old age of 20. @@luciexvxvxvx ok yeah, if everyone was wearing the same thing that would suck, but like a lot of these looks were terrible and it’s because money can’t buy taste. This is why I love high fashion, because there are ateliers who are able to do magical things with the funding they have. Then the majority of people who can afford to wear these clothes have zero sense of style. That’s why the one girl in the like angelic look (sorry I forgot her name and I don’t feel like going back to check names) brought the house down so hard. It’s because she knew how to turn a look and do something with her wealth, in this instance.

The fact that that one lady is being named as the Archduchess of Austria is really interesting to me, because there has been no such thing since 1919. If she calls herself that, she's not even allowed to cross into Austria. She'd be committing a criminal offense punishable by six months in prison because the abolishment of the monarchy and all titles related to it are literally in our constitution 🤔

I went to university with one of the ball attendees from the 2015. She never spoke of her wealth or privilege, but she acted incredibly privileged and was a pain to have in any course/group work. It was always a question "I wonder will she show up to class today" which if you were in a group project with her - was incredibly frustrating. I didn't even know she had attended the ball till I opened Vanity Fair and spotted her in there. But it made perfect sense once I saw her.

Lissie Selassie's dress is also extremely reminiscent of traditional Ethiopian dresses (particularly habesha kemis) which are often of a very light and diaphanous white fabric with lots of gathers and pleats. So as well as being very debutante old world vibes, I would say her dress is a clear nod to traditional Ethiopian women's dresses

About Angelina Jordan. She won "Norway's got talent" at age seven, singing old jazz Billie Holiday style such musicality and feeling, she was an instant star. At age 12, she was invited to perform (among many other events) at Quincy Jones 85th birthday celebration at the London O2. Pretty cool, huh? She writes a lot of her own music and is reminiscent of Amy Winehouse. She is perhaps the only one of all of the debs who is not really a nepo baby, but does come from a family of artists. As for fashion, she often performs in retro outfits with 50's, 60's feel.

Growing up in the South, Debutante Balls were and still are a staple in the monied classes.
The worst thing I ever commented on was to a customer about how antiquated the practice was. I likened it to a cattle call, parading the girls around like a bunch of virgins, with the parents looking towards a good merger of money than a good marriage.
The ball has been moved from Spring break to Thanksgiving Friday because the girls would have rather gone to the beaches, which meant that I had to work on Thanksgiving Day and that wasn't sitting well with me all on its own.
The mom sorta agreed, but the only thing that the dad heard was that I said that his daughter wasn't a virgin.

I'm obsessed with Eden's Green Mossy Dress: her hair just doesn't do it justice. (I have curls so that's not the issue) The issue is length and volume. She should have fluffed and teased or gone with extensions (thick ones) and made her hair really long and wavy (like a fairy in a garden of moss). Maybe put some jewels in the hair (like woven in). And done a dramatic eye (something whimsical).

Yes, we had a ball but it was just a school dance, and there was none of the being presented to society. It was more a recognition of our hard work and diligence for the year. I can't speak for her title as princess of Hungary but the archduchess or Austria is definitely bullshit. Apparently the titles are "unofficial", I've never seen any Habsburg use their titles, especially as the Habsburgs aren't exactly popular here. Most don't even use the "von" because it sounds stuck up. I assume this is the fault of whoever reported on this event and not Ildikos, but she definitely isn't an archduchess.

Same for Hungary, the Habsburgs were stripped of their titles in 1919 and later on all of the noble titles were abolished in the country so imagine my shock when I saw that apparently we have a princess. She is the great-granddaughter of the last Habsburg Emperor/Hungarian king. She and her siblings grew up in Hungary, but they have Austrian nationalities as well and currently she is studying law in Spain. Her family was and is in politics, her grandfather was in the EU Parliament and her dad is the Hungarian ambassador in France. She actually seems kind of humble too. I don't know who messed up, but I feel really weird about the fact that on paper she can use titles that haven't existed for over a 100 years.

And yes she is an amazing singer. She would have been much more famous but her parents wanted her to have a somewhat normal childhood, turning down Disney, and many others who wanted to sign her to a contract. Her parents would let her sing at charities, and some summer concerts. Nora Jones had her open a concert for her to 40 thousand fans, Quincy Jones had her sing "Fly Me To The Moon" this 85th Birthday gala. She has been signed by Republic Records at 14 but they promised not to promote her till she turns 18 which is next month January 10th. They have built Angelina her own studio in LA.

Angelina Jordan is not a nepo girl, she comes from an upper middle class family & was invited based on her talent as a vocal artist. Her talent by the age of 8 was already so amazing that in her native country, Norway, she was declared a "National Treasure" by not only the royal family, but also by the prime minister. She has been held back & protected from the music industry by her loving family to allow her as "normal" a childhood as is possible for a vocal prodigy & to allow her to get a basic education. Well, she just graduated HS & turns 18 next month, so she is ready to begin her full-time career as an adult. Her music videos already have over 5.8 Billion views on FB & YT & she is just officially starting. In 5 years, she will be a household name around the World & she is already the best vocalist I've ever had the pleasure to hear. She is unique from all the others at this event by earning her invitation, not based on money or family.

Form your own opinions, your own preferences. So what if a youtuber doesn't agree with your taste? By all means: learn what you want to know about fashion but never forget that you form your OWN opinions and those may or may not align with other people. When I heard you talk about Iris van Herpen I remembered queen Maxima wearing Iris' design in November. I thought you maybe could include it in a November fashion roast or something. She looked phenomenal imo and I never though i'd see a royal wearing Iris van Herpen

The Dutch royal family is known for being quite 'daring' in their style. It's either very casual or a very bold statement. Never a middle ground😅

Luke, thanks for this. I first heard of these balls about 30 years ago when they were covered in Town and Country magazine. I think the magazine covers the ball each year. The debs have always worn high fashion gowns, although as you say, the very rich often have very bad taste. But that is changing nowadays with the younger set, but not quickly enough as we can see from some of the gowns!

Charity, she donated the 80,000 dollars she won on Norway’s Got Talent
Angelina Jordan won Norway’s Got Talent at the age of 8 in 2014, the prize for winning was eighty thousand dollars, this money was donated to children’s charities. At age 8 her first charity performance was in Germany to raise money for heart disease. Again, at age 8 she does a telethon for Plan International Children’s Charity. Still at age 8 she performs for Norwegian Sea Rescue Society Charity. On the 12th of Dec still at age 8, she performs at Save The Child Nobel Peace Prize, 4 days later, even though she has a very bad cold, she performs for the Swedish Heroes Foundation against her doctor's orders. At age 10 she performed for the Norwegian Refugee Council Charity. Also age 10 she performed in Seoul in South Korea for Rotary International to raise money for children’s vaccinations. Angelina Jordan comes from a very wealthy family and does need the money, she, and her family want to share her wonderful talent with the world. This is what makes AJ and her family so very special. This information was on Alan's Pod Cast.

Fun fact about Ethiopia’s dress, it’s very similar to our cultural dress of pure white cotton, that flows and ruffles at the bottom with either a cross or flower motif for Christian and Muslims respectively.

i agree, the colour and the cut both seem really classic, vintage type elegant:) but as a Hungarian i got a bit flabbergasted the title Princess of Hungary would still exist haha

These balls never really went away for the upper middle class and upper class United States, especially in the South these are a big deal. There are two in my town. I don’t think they’re really for finding husbands anymore, because nowadays that what sororities are for (at least for some people). But the tradition remains.

I don’t think debutante balls really ever went away. My mom was a debutante in the 80s. Although I’m not quite filled in on the history, as she moved away from that state and therefore I wasn’t “eligible” to be a debutante bc I wasn’t from the society of our new state (I’ve lived here my whole life😂) Really my parents just weren’t in the right circle to nominate me. It is a very strange tradition.

Ildikó Habsburg-Lothringen with the long title of Princess of Hungary and Archducess of Austria has a funny title since both Austria an Hungary no longer have a royal family and haven't had one for a little over a 100 years. The Habsburgs did rule the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, but the monarchy ended after WW I. after the Treaty of Trianon.
Interesting video as always, but you've shown Helena Bonham Carter more than the actual debutante and for the first few seconds, since you've shown HBC I thought that that girl looked eerily just like her and was maybe her daughter or something.
